Sometimes,
Usually,
The changes that we face shock us.
They may shake us to our core like a derailed train.
We don't know how to get up again.
We don't know how to move forward.
Of course,
It depends on the change.
Some things are easier than others.
But what about those big,
Life-shaping events that change the way we see the world,
That change our everyday functioning,
That change our reality,
And even change the way we see ourselves?
Usually,
There's a process for this.
First,
We might go into denial.
Denial might teeter-totter back and forth as we play with both realities,
Dancing between the world that we knew and the world we don't yet know,
That unknown world that feels scary,
Or perhaps the new truth we don't yet want to face.
We may resist it.
We may fight it.
We may even claim we hate it.
That we want to go back to how things were,
Even if we weren't happy before,
We knew something wasn't right,
Or perhaps we're just growing,
And part of what we're feeling are growing pains,
And part of what we're feeling are growing pains.
The pains we face when we let go.
Let go of our past.
Let go of all the past versions of ourselves.
Let go of all that is no longer.
Then,
Slowly,
Or however long it takes,
Eventually,
We stop fighting and eventually the denial wears off,
And we begin teetering in the direction of this new reality we are faced with.
Maybe because we know we don't have another option.
Maybe because we know we don't have another option.
We always have to face what is in front of us,
No matter what it is.
The longer we resist,
The more it persists,
As they say.
Slowly,
Day by day,
Moment by moment,
The acceptance starts to creep in,
Like a vine,
It grows more every day,
And begins to wrap itself around us and our world.
The moment we surrender,
This new world takes over,
And we do what we can to move with it,
In the only direction there is to move,
Forward.
Must we be reminded,
Over and over again,
That nothing is permanent?
Let us continue to ride the waves of life,
Like we are the wave itself.
