For this mindful activity, you will need a light snack or drink (e.g. a biscuit or water). We often don’t pay full attention to what or how we are eating and drinking. This Mindful Eating exercise will help to increase your awareness in relation to food or drink by noticing the different qualities and how it makes us feel. Choose your food or drink item, get comfortable and let’s apply mindfulness to our eating and drinking.

Hello and welcome to Mindfulness with Ruby.

For this exercise you will need a light snack,

Whether that's a biscuit,

A piece of fruit or even a drink such as tea or water.

And when you are ready,

We shall begin.

In the modern world,

With so much stimulation and noise around us,

We often rush our food to move on to the next task or we eat whilst watching TV or working.

Sometimes we eat in response to an emotional feeling,

Or we eat in response to a feeling of sadness,

Or happiness.

In the modern world,

With so much stimulation and noise around us,

We often rush our food to move on to the next task or we eat whilst watching TV or working.

Sometimes we eat in response to an emotional feeling,

Such as anger,

Sadness or happiness,

Rather than eating with the purpose of nourishing our body.

In this exercise,

We will be applying mindfulness to a food or drink item.

Before we start eating our snack or drinking our drink,

I would like for you to take a moment to notice the features of the item.

So noticing the colour or the colours,

Or the colours of the food,

Or the food,

Noticing the patterns that it might have,

What does it sound like as you hold or sway the item in your hand,

Or maybe it doesn't have a sound.

Take your time to notice.

Can you feel the temperature of the item?

Is it hot?

Maybe warm?

Or maybe cold?

What does your item smell like?

Does it have a sweet or maybe a savoury scent?

Or maybe there is no scent?

What does your item smell like?

Does it have a sweet or maybe a savoury scent?

Or maybe there is no scent?

Again,

Just notice using your senses.

Now I would like for you to take your first small bite or sip and as you do this,

I would like for you to identify any flavours that you can taste.

Maybe there is more than one flavour that you can taste.

Maybe there is more flavour?

Or maybe not.

There could be a change of flavour,

Maybe a change of temperature,

Sound,

Smell or texture as you are eating or sipping.

Take your time to notice.

Before reaching or anticipating for your next bite or sip,

Take your time to notice how you are feeling right now.

Do you feel relaxed and satisfied?

Do you feel maybe anxious to finish your snack or drink?

Or do you feel anything else?

However you are feeling,

Just notice it without judging whether it's right or wrong.

Just notice.

You may now take another bite or sip of your item.

Again whilst doing this,

Please identify the flavours,

Temperature,

The sound,

Smell or texture as well as any feelings that you feel.

Thank you for watching.

Thank you for trying your best to commit to this practice and if possible try to use parts of this practice when you next eat or drink.

Thank you.
