Tonglen is a Tibetan Buddhist practice used for the beginning of Bodhicitta - The Awakening or path to Buddhahood. Seeing the other as equal, and therefore desiring to rid any suffering as well as offering happiness and peace to another is equal to doing this unto yourself. This can be used as a kind of prayer for others or for the healing of the Earth, but also beneficial for unwanted thoughts. Taking our eyes off our issues and 'praying' for others is hugely rewarding.

Tonglen is Tibetan for sending and receiving and refers to a meditation practice found in Tibetan Buddhism.

Tong means giving or sending and len means receiving or taking.

When you inhale you breathe in with the intention and longing to remove another suffering.

This could be animals or a group of people in the world.

It could be a country or an individual who you know is suffering.

It could be for the whole earth if you wanted.

Then you imagine that the suffering you have received is dissolved into the compassion of your heart and here it melts away.

On the exhale you imagine sending out love,

Compassion,

Smiles,

Food and drink,

A home,

Strength,

Courage.

Whatever you feel that person or group is in need of.

This is not merely a feel-good exercise.

According to the Heart Math Institute,

Our thoughts and emotions actually can affect the heart's magnetic field which energetically affects those in our environment whether we are conscious of it or not.

They say that radiating love into the planetary field environment increases the positive energy making it easier for the planet and its inhabitants to shift and transmute the accumulated negative energy.

Even sending two minutes of loving care a day to Mother Earth can make a big difference.

So have a think of who you would like to give and receive today.

Someone who is suffering.

Have a picture of that person or that group or the earth in your mind.

Close your eyes if you wish and really focus on your chosen ones.

Think about all the suffering they are going through.

Let's breathe together right now for them.

And now on your next inhale,

Imagine that their suffering is a dark smoke and you are inhaling all the fear,

Pain,

Isolation,

Shame,

Sadness into your heart which is full of compassion.

Hold the breath here and visualize that your heart takes in this pain and fully dissolves it.

It cannot remain here,

It cannot live where compassion lives.

And as you exhale,

Imagine you are sending rays of light and goodness,

Joy,

Peace and love towards them.

Visualize the rays of light landing on them,

Penetrating them.

All the goodness that you are sending is being fully absorbed by them.

There is only your imagination now that will limit you.

So if you wish to continue to another person or another group,

Then please do.

Otherwise remain here,

Keeping your person in your mind.

What if this was true?

What if this statement from HeartMath Institute is true?

That us radiating love into the planetary field environment increases positive energy,

Making it easier for the planet and its inhabitants to shift and transmute the accumulated negative energy.

That even sending two minutes of loving care a day to Mother Earth can make a big difference.

Surely we can do this.

Let me know what you thought of this meditation.

Do you believe this to be true?

Do you believe that this can make a difference?

Let me know.

Thank you.

Mandy, this practice moved me to tears. I felt deeply connected to those i was practicing for and to Mother Earth to whom I was also focused on. I felt a great sense of the amount of pain my people were holding, i felt it dissolving in my chest and I had a sense of the light and positive power well up within me and I loved this immensely. 🙏🏻

Breathing for Palestine, breathing for mass deportees, breathing for all in fear and hopelessness, breathing for our earth who supports us all. Thank you for guiding AND the Heartmath info.

Thank you for this practice. My heart has felt heavy lately and I was searching for guidance. I’ve been troubled by the state of things in the world. Sending the planet and those with calloused souls gave me hope that things could change for the better. Namaste
