The Path of Insight.
What we are is the result of what we have thought.
We are ruled by our thoughts.
We are made up of our thoughts.
If you speak and act with a pure heart,
Happiness follows you like a shadow that never leaves.
Hatred is never appeased by hatred.
Hatred is conquered by love.
This is an eternal law.
Whoever lives not for pleasure only,
The senses well controlled,
Moderate in consumption,
Who is trusting and strong in effort,
Will not be overthrown by temptations,
Just as stormy winds cannot shake a mountain.
As rain does not seep into a well-roofed house,
Passion does not make its way into a well-developed mind.
The virtuous find joy in this world,
And they find joy in the next when recollecting their own good deeds.
Aware among the thoughtless,
Awake among the sleepy,
The wise one advances like a racehorse leaving behind a hack.
Let the wise guard their thoughts,
Which are difficult to perceive,
Tricky and wandering.
Thoughts well guarded bring happiness.
Whatever an enemy may do to an enemy,
Or a hater to the object of one's hatred,
A wrongly directed mind will do greater harm.
Whoever realizes that this body is impermanent like foam,
And has understood that its nature is insubstantial like a mirage,
Who destroys all illusions,
Is invisible to the King of Death.
Not the faults of others,
What they have done or not,
But one's own faults and omissions should the sage consider.
Long is the night to the sleepless,
Long is a mile to one who is tired,
Long is the cycle of birth and rebirth to the fool who does not know the true path.
I have children,
I have wealth.
With such thoughts a fool is afflicted.
You don't even own yourself.
How much less children and wealth.
A fool who knows one's own folly is wise at least to that extent,
But a fool who thinks oneself wise is really a fool.
Even as the wrong action does not bear fruit,
The fool thinks it's sweet like honey.
But when the evil deed bears fruit,
Then the fool suffers grief.
As a solid rock is not shaken by the storm,
Wise people are not shaken by blame and praise.
Only a few people reach the opposite shore,
The untrodden country,
Nirvana.
Most people run along this shore of worldly existence,
But those who follow the well-expounded truths will cross the realm of death.
You may conquer a million enemies in battle,
But one who conquers oneself is indeed the greatest victor.
If you do what is wrong,
Don't do it again.
Don't delight in it.
Painful is the accumulation of bad deeds.
If you do what is good,
Do it again.
Find joy in it.
Happiness is the result of good deeds.
Even an evil person may still find happiness as long as the wrong action does not ripen.
But when the wrong action has ripened,
The evil person sees the painful results.
Even a good person meets with bad fortune as long as the good action does not ripen.
But when the good action has ripened,
The good person sees the pleasant results.
Whoever offends against a trusting and pure person,
The wrong returns to that fool,
Just like fine dust thrown against the wind.
Neither in the sky,
Nor in the middle of the ocean,
Nor by entering the caves of mountains,
Is there known a place on earth where a person can escape from the result of a wrong action.
Everyone trembles at violence.
Everyone fears death.
Putting yourself in the place of another,
You shall neither harm anyone nor cause anyone to harm others.
If you are seeking your own happiness by not oppressing other beings who also strive for happiness,
You will find happiness after death.
Just like the cowherd drives the cows to pasture with his stick,
So old age and death drive the life of all beings from existence to existence.
Why is there laughter?
Why is there joy while this world is always burning?
Why don't you seek a light,
You who are shrouded in darkness?
The beautiful chariots of the kings wear out.
The body also comes to old age.
But the teachings of the awakened ones do not decay.
I have run through a course of many births,
Unable to find the builder of this body's house.
To be born again and again is painful.
Now you are recognized,
Builder.
Craving is the builder of this house.
You will not build this house again.
The walls of craving are broken down.
The roof of illusion is destroyed.
My mind has reached enlightenment.
I have attained the end of all cravings,
The untrodden country.
The Self is protector of yourself.
Who else could be your refuge?
With oneself fully controlled,
You can attain a refuge which is so hard to gain.
By oneself is wrong done.
By oneself one suffers.
By oneself is wrong left undone.
By oneself one becomes pure.
Purity and impurity depend on oneself.
No one can purify another.
Look upon the world as an impermanent bubble.
Look on it as an insubstantial mirage.
Who observes the world like that is not seen by the King of Death.
One whose wrong actions are eradicated by good deeds illuminates this world like the moon when freed from clouds.
To do wrong,
To do good,
And to purify one's mind,
That is the teaching of the awakened ones.
People driven by fear go for refuge to high mountains and deep forests,
To sacred places and shrines.
But that is not a safe refuge.
That is not the best refuge.
After having gone to that refuge,
A person is not delivered from all pains.
Whoever takes refuge in the Buddha,
His teaching and his community,
Who with clear understanding sees the Four Noble Truths,
Namely,
Suffering,
The origin of suffering,
The cessation of suffering,
And the Noble Eightfold Path,
That leads to the cessation of suffering.
That is indeed a safe refuge.
That is indeed the best refuge.
Having gone to that refuge,
A person will be free from all suffering.
Let us live in joy,
Not hating those who hate us.
Among hateful people,
We live free from hatred.
Victory leads to hatred because the defeated live in pain.
Whoever has given up victory and defeat is tranquil and lives joyfully.
Let no one cling to what is pleasant or unpleasant.
Loss of what is loved is painful,
And it is painful to see what is unpleasant.
Therefore,
Do not become attached to anything.
Those who have neither likes nor dislikes have no chains.
Kinsmen,
Friends,
And companions welcome a person who has been away long and returned safely from afar.
In the same way,
One's good actions receive the good person who has gone from this world to the next,
Just like relatives receive a friend who is returning home.
Give up anger,
Renounce pride,
And overcome all worldly attachments.
No sufferings touch the person who is not attached to mind and body,
Who calls nothing one's own.
Whoever restrains rising anger like a chariot gone astray,
That one is a skillful charioteer.
Others merely hold the reins.
Overcome anger by love.
Overcome badness by goodness.
Overcome greed by generosity.
And the liar by truth.
The wise ones who do not harm others,
Always guarding their behavior,
Go to the unchangeable place where they suffer no more.
You are like a withered leaf.
The messengers of death await you.
You stand at the threshold of your departure.
Have you made provision for your journey to the untrodden country by performing good deeds?
Make yourself a safe island.
Work hard.
Be wise.
When your impurities are purged and you are free from guilt,
You will escape the circle of birth and death.
Just as a silversmith removes the impurities from silver,
So let the wise remove the impurities from oneself,
One by one,
Little by little,
Again and again.
Whoever destroys life,
Whoever speaks falsely,
Takes what is not given,
Goes to another person's spouse,
And is addicted to intoxicants,
Such a person digs up their own roots by destroying the basis of a happy life right here in this world.
All conditioned things are impermanent.
All conditioned things are unsatisfactory.
All things are without a self.
Whoever realizes this turns away from suffering.
This is the path of purification.
Here I will live in the rainy season.
Here in winter.
Here in summer.
Thus thinks the fool,
Not realizing that death might intervene.
Death comes and carries off that person who is attached to human bonds and tangible goods,
Like a flood carries off a sleeping village.
By giving up a small pleasure,
One obtains a great pleasure.
Renouncing the small pleasure,
The wise will obtain great happiness.
Just like a border city that is well guarded inside and out,
So guard yourself.
Do not let pass this opportunity for spiritual growth,
For those who miss this opportunity come to grief in the next world.
Excellent are well trained mules,
Noble horses and elephants with large tusks.
But whoever has a well trained self is better still.
By these mounts no one reaches the untrodden country,
Where a well trained person goes on one's own well trained self.
The craving of a thoughtless person grows like a creeper,
Like a monkey seeking fruits in the forest.
That one leaps from existence to existence,
Tasting the fruits of one's careless actions.
Wise people do not call that a strong chain,
Which is made of iron or rope.
Far stronger is the attachment to tangible goods and human bonds.
Let go of the past.
Let go of the future.
Let go of the present.
When you cross over to the farther shore of existence,
You will not again undergo birth and death.
Empty the boat.
Bail out the water of wrong thoughts.
When emptied it will travel quickly.
Having cut off desire and hatred,
You will reach the untrodden country.
When one has comprehended the rise and fall of the elements of the body,
One finds happiness and joy,
Which belong to those who know the immortal.
There is no meditation for one without insight.
No insight for one without meditation.
Whoever has insight and meditation is close to enlightenment.
This was the path of insight by Gรผnter Goegh.
Thank you for watching.

Full 30 minutes of philosophical treasures providing sustenance and inspiration to the mind. thank you ๐ Guenther. When I was 18 I came across the Desiderata in a bookshop in Hawai and the book that contains the Desiderata is still wit me. It is my go-to soul recipe when I need to reaffirm my ideals. Now almost a life time later I find this another great go-to and I must say what wisdom, what insights, inspiration, courage, deeply spiritual, and profound truths this carry ! I stand in awe as I recollect my recent post in the science of meditation where I was asked to provide evidence of my thoughts and belief system - I didnโt ... I didnโt think I needed to validate my belief system . And then I hear this collection from The Dhammapada that aligns with wat I myself believe about rebirth, nirvana, our next life, & drawing our next life after crossing the realm of death. I cannot help wondering while the world stands with sodality messages for Israel should we not have a message for Palestine from this collection - โWho while seeking happiness oppresses with violence other beings who also desire happiness, will not find happiness โ
