There is a certain uneasiness that comes with not knowing how things will turn out.
Our mind likes to move quickly.
It wants direction,
Definition,
Something to hold on to.
When life feels unclear,
It can be so tempting to fill in the blanks or to imagine worst-case scenarios,
Or just a rush toward decision,
Simply to escape the discomfort of uncertainty.
But sometimes the next step just isn't visible yet.
And maybe that's okay.
So today let's slow down together and explore the possibility of being at ease with not knowing.
So just find a comfortable position,
Sitting or lying down,
Whatever feels most natural in this moment.
And when you're ready,
Just take a slow deep breath in and let it gently fall out.
There's no need to change or perfect anything.
Just arriving here just as you are.
Feel the weight of your body settling.
The surface beneath you supporting everything that you're carrying.
And as you breathe,
Just notice if there's any part of you that's already starting to soften,
Simply from just pausing.
And without forcing anything,
See if you can tune in to whatever uncertainty is alive in your life right now.
Maybe it's something big and maybe it's something small,
Or maybe it's just this vague sense of being between chapters.
But you don't have to solve anything right here.
We're just noticing.
Take another slow breath in and a long easy exhale out.
Almost like you're letting the breath rinse through the mind,
Clearing just a little space around whatever feels unclear.
Uncertainty has this way of pulling us ahead of ourselves,
Tugging our attention into the future,
Into imagined outcomes,
Into the what-ifs.
So for a moment,
Right now,
Bring it back,
Back to the body.
And let's just anchor ourselves in what is knowable.
So feel that air moving in,
And feel the air moving out.
It's so simple,
So reliable,
Even when the rest of life feels anything but predictable.
Our breath reminds us that not everything is up in the air.
And as you continue to breathe,
Just noticing if the mind tries to dart off towards planning,
Or forecasting,
Or even just drifting,
Thinking.
And just gently guide it back.
Not with a forcefulness,
But with a friendliness.
Like you're talking to a child,
Saying let's just stay right here for a bit.
Now as you sit here with your breath,
Imagine that uncertainty that you're holding as a foggy landscape.
You can't see too far ahead,
Maybe even just a foot or two in front of you,
But you can see where you're standing.
You know this step,
This breath,
This moment,
And that's all that matters.
That's enough for now.
What do you think it would feel like to trust that the path ahead will reveal itself in its own time?
Not on your timeline,
Or according to your preferences,
But when the moment is actually ready.
Take a breath in,
Let it out.
Notice if there's any urge to resist that idea.
And hey,
It's totally okay if it is.
We're not trying to convince ourselves to enjoy uncertainty,
We're simply experimenting with not fighting it.
Uncertainty is often uncomfortable,
But discomfort is not danger,
It's just a sensation.
So see if you can sit with that for a moment.
The truth that not knowing is uncomfortable,
Survivable and temporary.
Just letting the breath continue to flow naturally,
Letting your thoughts come and go as they please.
And as you breathe,
You might quietly think to yourself,
I don't have to know everything right now,
Or it's okay to be exactly where I am.
No pressure,
Just possibility.
You see,
Uncertainty is not a failure of clarity,
It's a part of being human.
And nestled inside that uncertainty is kind of a quiet potential,
A space where new paths,
New insights can start to take shape.
Sometimes even before you can see them.
As Sharon Salzberg reminds us,
When we let go of our fixation on the end result,
We learn to rest in the unfolding.
Just let that settle in for a moment.
The freedom of resting in the unfolding instead of demanding a final answer right now.
Breath in and let it out.
Now as we begin to close,
Just bring your attention back to your body,
Back to where you're sitting or lying down.
Noticing any shifts,
Maybe subtle,
Maybe noticeable in how the uncertainty feels compared to when we started.
And we're not judging,
We're just noticing.
As we move through the rest of our day,
Just seeing if we can return to the sense of spaciousness whenever uncertainty shows up.
Letting that breath be the reminder that even when you can't see the whole path,
You can still take the next step with a little more steadiness and hopefully with a little less fear.
When you're ready,
Take one more slow breath in and a soft breath out and you can gently open your eyes.
May you be happy,
May you be healthy and may you be at peace.
Thanks so much for joining me.
