In this short meditation, I will guide you through a mindful dishwashing practice. Use this meditation as often as you would like when washing dishes to touch the present moment. This meditation is inspired from Thich Nhat Hanh's mindful dishwashing meditation practice from Plum Village.

Throughout the day,

We may spend it rushing or not being as present as we may like.

Washing your dishes mindfully can promote the energy of awareness in your day-to-day life.

Oftentimes,

When we wash our dishes,

Our mind is elsewhere.

Sometimes thinking about what show we are going to watch next or how we would like to relax afterwards.

When we take this time to place our mind elsewhere,

We lose focus entirely from the present moment.

As we practice to wash the dishes mindfully,

We promote a sense of mindfulness that will permeate throughout our entire life.

When we are present in the moment,

We are actually freeing ourselves from our stress and our worries.

There is no more running and no more rushing.

There is no need to hurry to the future or ruminate on the past.

There is only this moment right now and we give our mind and body the permission to rest and relax.

As you stand facing your sink,

Become aware of your feet touching the floor.

Feel every part of your feet on the floor from your toes to the balls of your feet all the way to your heels.

Take a deep breath in and take a deep breath out.

Breathe deeply a few more times and simply enjoy this present moment.

Now become aware of your posture.

Breathe deeply as you connect with your posture and your body.

If you think about it,

Washing the dishes can be a pleasantly relaxing and joyful activity.

We have running water,

Bubbly soap,

And the ability to have clean silverware and dishware.

Enjoy the feeling of warm water on your hands and enjoy this present moment.

There is nothing else in the world that you need to tend to right now besides washing the dish that is right in front of you.

There is nothing to feel worried about,

Nothing to stress out about in this very present moment right here right now.

Now breathing in again,

I am aware of this present moment.

Breathing out,

I smile.

Dwelling in the present moment,

I know that this is the only moment.

As you wash the dishes,

Note that this practice can be transferred to any other task.

You can brush your teeth mindfully,

You can take a shower mindfully,

Anything can be done with the energy of mindfulness in your life.
