Who or what am I is a question many of us ask at some time. This exercise will explore what we commonly take to be ourselves - body, emotions, desires, feelings and thoughts. But is this true? This exercise will lead us to a deeper truth to who we really are and in discovering that we can experience peace.

Let's start by taking three deep breaths.

And become aware of what your body is experiencing.

You can feel the chair underneath,

Your feet on the floor.

Maybe some aches and pains in the body.

Maybe a sensation in the stomach or the neck.

Just become aware without any judgment.

You're like a good scientist,

You're just watching what's happening in the body.

And then say to yourself inside,

I have a body,

But I'm not my body.

I have a body,

But I'm not my body.

My body may find itself in different conditions of health or sickness.

These bodily conditions constantly change and thus cannot be my true self.

And then say again,

I have a body,

But I'm not my body.

Take another three breaths.

Become aware of any emotions you're experiencing,

Whether they're happy or sad,

So-called positive or negative.

And again,

Try and just observe them without judgment,

Without labels.

Maybe you're just feeling peaceful.

You can observe that.

And then say to yourself,

I have emotions,

But I'm not my emotions.

I have emotions,

But I'm not my emotions.

These emotions constantly change and thus cannot be my true self.

If I watch my emotions,

Then I can't be my emotions.

Say again,

I have emotions,

But I'm not my emotions.

Take another three breaths.

Now become aware of any desires you're experiencing.

Again,

Observe without judgment.

It could be ego desires,

Spiritual desires.

That's fine.

Desires you've carried all your life,

Short-term desires.

And then say to yourself,

I have desires,

But I'm not my desires.

If I can watch my desires,

I can't be them.

These desires constantly change and thus cannot be my true self.

Repeat again,

I have desires,

But I'm not my desires.

Take another three breaths.

And now become aware of any thoughts you're experiencing.

Just allow them to be there,

To flow through,

Again,

Not judging if they're good or bad,

Right or wrong.

You're an observer.

You're watching them.

Say to yourself,

I have thoughts that are not my thoughts.

If I can watch my thoughts,

Then I can't be them.

Notice any gaps between the thoughts.

Notice you're still there as the observer.

These thoughts constantly change and thus cannot be my true self.

Lastly,

Say,

I have thoughts,

But I'm not my thoughts.

Take three more breaths.

And then say to yourself,

I have a body,

But I'm not my body.

I have emotions,

But I'm not my emotions.

I have desires,

But I'm not my desires.

I have thoughts,

But I'm not my thoughts.

I am the observer of all these.

I am that presence of awareness that witnesses all of these,

But is unaffected by them.

Awareness is my true nature.

I am a center of pure consciousness.

I now surrender all that I thought I was.

I am not a body,

I am free,

For I'm still as God created me.

When you're ready,

Just bring yourself back to the room and open your eyes.
