The Kunjed Gyalpo is considered a fundamental tantra of Dzogchen, a teaching that according to tradition has been transmitted for over two thousand years from teacher to disciple. Its aim is to awaken each individual to his or her true nature: the primordial state of enlightenment, which can be compared to a mirror on whose surface the multiplicity of the phenomena of existence is reflected. Introducing this knowledge is the teacher's task while understanding it deeply and integrating it into one's existence is the disciple's task. Only when this has been accomplished do the traditional texts become living words, precious pointers along the timeless journey towards that which you have not left even for a moment.

The supreme source.

The fundamental tantra of the Dzogchen Semde,

Kunyit Gelpo.

The teachings that establish knowledge.

I am the lamp of the teachers,

Pure in total consciousness.

I am the fundamental essence of the Buddhas of all the three times.

I am the mother and father of the beings of the three worlds.

I am the final cause of all that exists in the animate and inanimate universe.

There is nothing that has not originated from me.

As I abide nowhere yet penetrate all,

From the beginning I am the Buddhas of the three times.

As my condition is equanimous and transcends thought,

I am the primordial Dharmakaya Buddha,

The non-discursive state of equality.

As my nature manifests as total enjoyment,

I am the primordial Sambhogakaya Buddha,

Perfect enjoyment.

As I manifest as self-arising wisdom,

I am the primordial Nirmanakaya Buddha,

The potentiality of energy.

Thus I am the fundamental essence of the Buddhas of the three times.

My primordial wisdom manifests as pure and total consciousness.

The five self-arising wisdoms are the mind of the six classes of beings.

Therefore I am the father and mother of all the beings of the three worlds.

All of the universe and its living beings,

The animate and inanimate world,

Are my essence manifested as the earth element.

As my manifestation exists from the beginning,

The earth element is the Buddha.

As everything unifies in my non-dual state,

I am the water element.

As it gathers everything,

The nature of mind is the water element.

As I spread out equally and everywhere my heat,

I am the fire element.

As it abides equally in everything,

The fire element is the Buddha.

I am without material obstructions and my nature is movement.

In this way the air element manifests as the Buddha.

I am unhindered and all-encompassing clarity.

Therefore what is called space is the Buddha.

Listen great being.

Dharmakaya is pure and total consciousness.

Other than pure and total consciousness,

There is no dharmakaya that can be the result of alteration.

Thus enlightenment is not something other than consciousness.

Sampogakaya is pure and total consciousness.

Other than pure and total consciousness and the forms that issue from it,

There is no other Sampogakaya.

Nirmanakaya is pure and total consciousness.

Other than pure and total consciousness that emanates,

There is nobody else that acts for the good of beings.

All the Buddhas of the three times two are nothing other than pure and total consciousness.

The Buddhas of the past achieved self-realization,

Perceiving the authentic nature of their mind.

As they have understood the authentic and unaltered nature of their mind,

The Buddhas of the present now act for the good of others.

The Buddhas to come in the future have never been taught to correct the self-arising state of their mind.

So already now they do not alter their mind by meditating on something.

Instead they follow the path of not correcting.

Those who do not understand that all the phenomena of the universe are pure and total consciousness seek self-realization in vain,

Correcting and striving.

However,

As they do not understand,

Even though they strive and correct themselves,

For many kalpas,

They do not accede to effortless bliss.

Listen.

As the three kayas are not produced by altering the nature of mind,

When the teachers of the three dimensions teach that one has to correct,

They do not transmit the fundamental reality.

However hard they try to make the necessity to alter something appear as truth,

This pertains to the provisional teaching and not to the definitive one.

Listen,

Great being.

I am the teacher of all the teachings.

From my three natures there manifest the three teachers.

Thus I teach three kinds of teachings.

The disciples who follow these teachings are of three categories too.

Who are the teachers?

The teacher that communicates the essence of existence.

The teacher that communicates the nature of existence.

The teacher that communicates through the meaning of words.

The teacher that communicates the essence manifests the empowering flow from the unborn condition and thereby discloses the fundamental state of all the phenomena of existence.

The teacher that communicates the nature manifests all the phenomena of existence in the dimension of its own form and teaches that no other nature exists.

The teacher that communicates through the meaning of words summarizes the meaning of all the teachings and transmits it to ignorant beings of the three worlds by means of word and explanation.

This is the nature of the teacher.

Now I will explain the three categories of disciples.

As soon as they start on the path,

Disciples of Atiyoga,

Beyond effort,

Acquire certainty and abide on the level of enlightenment.

The Vidyadhara and Bodhisattva disciples from the first to the tenth levels of realization who have not yet achieved enlightenment,

Although they are very near it,

Are still on the level of the path of meditation.

The disciples who practice mental aspiration abide at the level of performance,

Of virtuous action,

In order to extinguish the poisons of the passions.

These are the categories of the disciples of the three teachers.

Listen,

Great being.

The Dharmakaya teaching concerns the authentic nature,

Which is impossible to divide.

Authentic nature denotes all the phenomena of existence by the nature of mind.

Whoever meditates,

Altering this condition does not understand the Dharmakaya teaching.

The true essence of enlightenment that does not manifest visibly is precisely the authentic nature.

Those who meditate on it and alter it do not perceive the true nature of their own mind.

The phenomena of manifestation and the essence of enlightenment that never manifests are both the authentic nature of mind.

Not understanding it,

Everyone perceives it in his own way.

But even if the Buddhas of the three times were to seek his nature,

They would not find it.
