Touch is a powerful indicator that we often use as a guiding force in our lives. We reach to touch the world around us but can miss the more subtle embrace of what surrounds us. The mind and heart have a relationship like this too, moving between grasping and gentle awareness. How do we find a collaboration by listening to the clear direction from the mind and the heart that seeks to be heard. This meditation starts with a short exercise to notice what holds your focus in the experience of touch, followed by a brief consideration of the alignment of the heart and mind. The guided meditation begins at 3:10 to help lead you within, to listen gently to the mind, past the grasping, and to make way to hear the heart. Music provided by Pond5

Hello,

Wonderful human beings.

For this meditation,

We're going to be focusing on the connections of the heart and the mind,

Bringing them into alignment.

If you'd like,

And you're not already doing so,

Please take a moment to sit down,

Perhaps noticing the connection of your body to where you're seated.

Allow your hands to rest gently,

Palms facing up on your thighs.

What do you feel as the backs of your hands press against your legs?

What do you notice?

Is there a sense of connection?

If so,

How strong or gentle is it as your hands rest on your legs?

Next,

Place your hands,

Palms face down on your legs,

With your palms and fingers touching your thighs.

What do you feel here?

Does it feel like a different connection with your hands facing down?

Does it feel the same or different?

Oftentimes,

We use our palms to grip and experience touch.

The sensation of what we're holding on to can feel stronger,

More dominant than what's gently touching us.

We tend to place our focus on what it is we find ourselves grasping for.

There are many sensations we can miss because our focus is held in one place,

Localized,

And we might limit our focus to what it is we're searching for.

We might not be having an intimate or close relationship with what is going on around us as well,

Those gentle connections.

Take our mind,

For example.

How often does our mind grasp,

Outweighing the awareness of our heart?

Oftentimes,

Our mind wants to direct us.

In my life,

I know I've let it drive the bus for a really long time,

Grasping,

And I found I was missing experiences that were reaching for me.

It wasn't until I stopped to listen and feel that I heard my heart saying,

There is more.

I am here for you,

Too.

It started simple,

Noticing the heartbeat and the sound,

And it grew to be a voice.

Is it possible you have also heard this whispering of the heart and you wanted to listen closer but couldn't for one reason or another?

I offer this meditation to help realign your heart and mind to reconnect to the sound of your heart.

Please make any adjustments needed to find a comfortable place to be,

Sitting,

Laying down,

Or even standing.

Rest your eyes if you'd like,

And let's begin with a breath as if this was the most beautiful deep breath you've taken yet today,

Leading you forward and then sighing it out,

Out through the mouth,

Letting go of anything that would want to hold you back,

Courageously,

As you take the next breath.

This one may be a bit deeper as you feel movement in your upper body.

The breath gently releases without hesitation,

A calm,

Natural breath in,

And a restorative breath out.

There may be some noisy chatter in the mind,

Resisting,

Nervous about finding peace or comfort.

Reassure your mind that you appreciate all that it does for you.

Your mind has been strong and resilient for you.

Take a moment to express appreciation for all of the ways your mind has guided you forward.

If you can,

Notice your mind's activity,

Visualizing its movement like an ocean,

Waves coming to shore,

Waves of thought.

Within the depth,

There is a stillness,

A knowingness,

And that is the place we seek today,

The calm within,

The calm within,

Without judgment,

Holds awareness.

As you breathe,

Just notice,

Has your breath slowed or quickened?

What does this mean to you?

Take a moment to notice any kind thoughts,

Words of wisdom you've shared with yourself or others,

And the beautiful dreams you hold all within the mind as you listen to the stillness that you may be feeling,

The rhythm of gentle movement.

Now,

If you'd like,

Place your hand over your heart and listen to the rhythm of your heart as it's steady.

Your heart is present with you at all times,

Like the earth below your feet.

Your heart beats and creates a harmonious rhythm within your body.

How long has it been since you've listened to your heart?

Consider how it gently beats so that the other organs within your body can be healthy and thrive.

What are the ways your heart supports you?

If you listen within your stillness,

What do you hear or sense from your heart?

Your heart holds wisdom.

What does it wish to share with you?

If you'd like to place your hand down,

Please do,

And rest here with an open mind and an open heart,

Listening to the wisdom you hold within.

I will be back for you in a moment.

This beautiful ocean of being finds intentional movement and stillness,

Like the oceans on the earth hold wonders of expressions and being deep within.

You too hold wonders and expressions of being.

Give thanks to your heart for the life it gives,

The mind for the consciousness it holds lovingly within.

As we prepare to return our attention to the physical world,

Begin noticing your body.

Do you feel more relaxed,

Calm?

Is there a renewed sense of wonder and appreciation of the alignment of the heart and the mind?

Begin making movements,

Bringing awareness to your physical self,

And if you've rested your eyes,

Let them open when you are ready.

Honor yourself for taking time for meditation today to reconnect the mind and the heart and shifting your focus,

If even for a moment,

To your centered awareness to give your heart a voice.
