The Oantiphons are a set of seven ancient liturgical texts used in the ancient Advent season,
Traditionally sung or recited in the week leading up to Christmas Eve.
Each antiphon begins with the exclamation,
O!
Followed by a title for the Messiah.
Here is a modern adaptation.
O Wisdom,
Shining brightly in the depths of our existence,
Guiding our minds with insight,
Dispelling ignorance,
Come illuminate our paths with your radiant presence and lead us to the truth that sets us free.
O Eternal Love,
Boundless and embracing,
Unite the fragmented pieces of our fractured hearts.
Come mend the wounds of division and discord and teach us the language of compassion and unity.
O Divine Joy,
Source of unending gladness,
Rejoice with us in moments of celebration and sorrow.
Come,
Infuse our lives with the spirit of exuberance and help us find joy in the ordinary and extraordinary.
O Holy Root,
Grounding us in the soil of humility,
Grow within us a tree of righteousness and justice.
Come,
Empower us to stand firm against injustice and nurture the seeds of equality and fairness.
O Radiant Light,
Piercing the darkness of our world,
Shine your brilliance on the shadows that haunt us.
Come,
Dispel the gloom of despair and fear and lead us into the dawn of hope and renewal.
O Prince of Peace,
Calming the storms of our strife,
Silence the clamor of hatred and aggression.
Come,
Instill in us a peace that surpasses understanding and guide us toward reconciliation and harmony.
O Emmanuel,
God with us in every moment,
Embrace us with your comforting and reassuring presence.
Dwell among us and be the anchor of our lives,
Binding us together in the tapestry of Divine Love.
May these modern oantiphons inspire reflection and anticipation as we approach the celebration of the birth of Christ.
