Research has shown that our experience of pain is directly related to our perception of the pain. This meditation will encourage you to create imagery that will assist you in mindfully perceiving your discomfort and calming your response to it, thereby reducing or eliminating your pain.

Mindfully healing pain.

Take a moment to settle into a supported,

Comfortable position.

Bring your awareness to the area in your body where you feel you are experiencing pain or discomfort.

If you're experiencing pain or discomfort in more than one area,

Bring your awareness to the most intense spot.

Now that you have identified this area,

We're going to engage our creative mind to assist us in toning down or eliminating these difficult sensations.

First,

Let's define the sensation a bit.

What is the quality of the sensation?

Is it sharp,

Achy,

Dull?

Is it static,

Shooting,

Throbbing?

Does it have a temperature,

Cool,

Warm,

Hot?

As you hold this discomfort in your mind,

See if you can give it a color.

Is it dark,

Light?

Can you see through it?

Does it have a solid quality?

Good.

Now let's give that sensation a shape.

Where are the boundaries of this sensation?

Where does the sensation begin and where does it end?

Can you outline it so that a shape or shapes emerge?

Is the shape smooth,

Rough,

Jagged?

Take a moment to witness the sensation and further define it as you see fit.

Now that the sensation has been clearly depicted,

See if you can come up with a color or colors that would soothe and heal this area.

Does this color have qualities that aid in its healing properties?

Imagine this color coming into the body with your in-breath.

With each inhale,

More healing color is brought to the area.

Notice what effect this new breath is having.

As you exhale,

The uncomfortable sensation is eased,

Flowing out of your body with the breath.

With each inhale,

More healing color,

And with each exhale,

You find deeper relaxation and ease.

Inhaling,

Healing,

Exhaling,

And finding ease.

Inhaling,

Healing,

Exhaling,

Ease.

Inhaling,

Healing,

And exhaling,

Ease.

This will take practice to learn. It feels like there is much healing and pain mamagement available through this visualization.

I love her voice! She makes the images open so that I can create my own ideas of what my pain looks and feels like. It’s important to me that she provides time for each shift of my focus. Regular listening and following will be produce even more relief...I’m sure of it! Coming back to this practice on a painful day reminds me of how powerful my mind is. I’m grateful for a renewed sense of confidence in my ability to find relief.
