So welcome to today's meditation.
This practice is called the space between and very often when we sit down to meditate we're looking for space,
We're looking to pause,
We're looking to find stillness and calm and very often in trying to get something from your meditation like space or calm or stillness we notice that our internal worlds are quite the opposite of that so we may find that as we go inwards we become,
Our thoughts become more obvious so even if you didn't think you had a busy mind you find that it's busier than you realized.
So this practice is designed to help you see the space that's already there to recognize where the space is so that you don't have to do any trying,
You're just noticing.
So with that being said just settling into your meditation position now,
Something nice and upright,
Something that supports you,
Something that feels comfortable and just shutting down your eyes when you're ready.
So becoming aware of the breath now,
Where do you feel the breath,
How do you notice the breath,
What sensations does the breath create,
Does the breath have a sound,
Maybe it has a temperature,
Can you feel that in your nostrils or your mouth?
What movement does the breath create,
Is there a subtle movement in the stomach and the chest,
A rise in and a fall in?
Just allowing your mind to be totally free so there's nothing to do.
So let's see what happens now if I ask you to just take note of the space between your thoughts and it doesn't matter how short or long this space is,
It doesn't matter what the duration is,
Just take in some time to notice where the space is between your thoughts and that space becomes the focus of your practice now.
So really dropping into,
Leaning into the moments where there is space,
A gap between the thinking.
So let's see if we can notice a gap or a space between our breaths,
Where does the breath start,
Where does the breath end and begin again,
Is there a space,
Is there a gap?
So there's no need to try to change the gap in any way or extend it,
Make it longer,
Allowing it to just be what it is,
Just noting it,
Being aware of the space.
We can do this too for sounds,
So whatever sounds are around you,
In your awareness,
Whether they're in your room,
The space that you're in or further afield,
A distant sound,
Once again we're dropping into the gap,
The space that is between the sounds that you hear.
And is there also space between your heartbeats?
Just getting curious now,
If you can find a sliver of space between each heartbeat.
So we can apply this practice to any part of our day,
We can look for gaps and space between whatever it is we are doing.
So we can apply it to our speak,
We can find the gaps between our words,
We can find the space between other people's words,
We can find the space or the gaps between music,
The notes of music,
The space between them,
We can locate that space between our blinks as we go about our day.
So there is space all around us in many,
Many of our moments that goes unrecognised,
We just simply aren't aware of the space that's there.
So we don't need to create more space,
We don't need to find more space,
We just need to be aware of when it is there.
So if you like you can open your eyes now,
In your own time,
Staying in this state of gap finding,
Space locating,
The awareness of space in your life,
In your experience.
And you can see what it's like to move through your day with this new awareness and I really hope that it helps you.
