“What do you want your life to look like?” - that question immediately triggered a memory:
my grandfather was an extremely depressed man, an extremely abusive man, and an extremely pessimistic man. My mom tried ways to invite him to think differently. She really wanted him to enjoy his elder days. She created a handmade journal for him to write about “how he wanted his life to look like”. Apparently, he put the journal on the shelf and never touched it. Years later, as I am helping him move out of his house and into my mom’s house, that journal was unearthed. When I asked him what it was and if he wanted to keep it, he literally said, “oh that’s your mother’s book.’ He had so rejected the idea that he could decide what his life looked liked, that he didn’t even claim ownership of the book his own daughter crafted for him by hand. He did not believe he had a choice in how his life looked.
He literally said “what’s the point of describing what you want your life to look like? It doesn’t matter what you want it to look like, because THIS is how it has to be.’

Something similar happened the first year I moved state to be closer to family. It was Christmas Eve, and we were doing our family tradition of watching A Christmas Carol with George C. Scott, Roger Rees, Savannah York. David Warner, you know the one…anyways, we watch it every year, and it’s like, he doesn’t get it. He doesn’t get that the story is about him. So after the film is over, I can see, once again, that my grandfather is moping around. I say, “donot worry, things are getting better.”
He turns and looks at me and says, “well, maybe for YOU it is…”. And this man had no idea why no one wanted to be around him.

He has forced his whole family to live like him. He couldn’t stand to witness anyone having more fun than he was having; he dissociated into a monster, trying to tear everyone to shreds for creating their own joy. He was jealous of their power, he couldn’t stand that they could do for themselves what he couldn’t do for himself.

So he hobbled us emotionally. He hobbled us spiritually. He made sure we were all in an electrified fence that he had access to whenever he needed us; and the psychological manipulation/domestication of us was so thorough, that by the time we had a choice to go out on our own, we were terrified of not spending every waking moment catering to his every whim.

I’m trying not to hate his guts for what he did to us.
I’m trying to forgive him and understand that he was traumatized too. But it is hard. It is difficult to see him, at this point, as anything but a vacuous, willfully-ignorant villain.
