This is a quick breathing technique that can be used during your contractions to help bring you focus and relaxation. Using the breath during labour is extremely beneficial as it helps the mind and body relax to enable you to embrace labour and relax fully into the experience.

The following technique is a breathing technique that you can use throughout your contractions.

This technique is known as the 5-7 breathing technique.

It's really simple to do.

It involves using numbers and also using the breath.

So the idea is as you breathe in,

You count in your mind to the number 5.

And as you breathe out,

You count to the number 7.

So an example would be breathing in 1,

2,

3,

4,

5.

And breathing out 1,

2,

3,

4,

5,

6,

7.

If you find that these numbers don't feel comfortable for you,

You can change the numbers just as long as the out breath is longer than the in breath.

So for example,

You might wish to change the numbers instead of 5,

7.

You might instead use 4,

6.

Or again taking that down even further,

You might choose to use 3 and 5.

It's a good idea to try and practice using your breathing technique for your contractions as soon as possible.

As having a breathing technique will really help the body to relax,

It will really help to keep you calm and keep you focused.
