Dhyana is the 7th limb of Yoga. This is the stage where your mind goes from a one-pointed focus to a wider awareness. This limb is marked by less effort and more witnessing/observing. Dhyana, which is a great state of equanimity, leads to the next and final limb of Yoga which is Samadhi.

The seventh limb of yoga is dhyana,

Which is meditation absorption.

So in the last limb we learned about dharana,

Which is one pointed focus on a particular object and when you keep bringing your attention to an object,

Whether that be chanting or bring attention to your breath or focusing on your third eye point,

Whatever it is,

If you keep bringing your attention back and you develop that concentration,

You then slip into a meditative absorption state and unlike dharana,

Which is single-pointed,

Dhyana,

Which is this limb,

Is more bigger picture.

It's more of relaxing into awareness.

So rather than focusing,

Now there's a period of just being aware of everything around you.

So think of it like kind of like a spaciousness,

A quality.

So this is a quality of spaciousness and silence where you're just observing everything around you without much effort because you've already kind of honed your senses in and now you're kind of seeing the whole big picture behind everything.

So this is a state of being which over time can develop and kind of permeate your being.

So this kind of takes more practice.

So then you learn to to get into the state of awareness and spaciousness.

You can then start to bring it outside just your meditation practice and you'll naturally find that this space will permeate when you're just driving or doing groceries and it becomes a state of being.

And this is a silent internal state and just the more that you experience the state through this practice and more you practice mindfulness,

Then it more it translates over to your daily life.

But this is also very different from a state where your mind is just wandering and you're kind of like daydreaming.

This is quite different from that.

You'll find that at this point in your practice your mental facilities have,

Faculties have kind of quietened down a bit and you are now just witnessing things around you rather than being swept by thought patterns and things like that.

So it's a very different state.

It's a very peaceful and nice state to be in.

So this comes through the practice of the previous limb which was Dardanav,

Of one point of focus and then just observing and relaxing into stillness and spaciousness.

And then once you've done this then you can experience and then you hold on to this state you will then experience samadhi which is the next limb.
