That Voice... You Know The One
by Lauri Albert
You know that voice in your head that tells you that you can’t do something? Why do we listen? My dear friend, Pierre Bensusan, has permitted me to use his track called ‘Sentimentales Pyromaniaques’ from the album 'Altiplanos'.

Let's begin our day with a little bit of happy talk and meditation in this short yet impactful podcast designed to infuse a little bit of positivity into each moment of every day.
Let's get in the flow.
I am always struck by when I can feel or when I find myself listening to that horrible little voice inside my head.
Do you guys know what I'm talking about?
And you know that voice that tells you you can't do something.
I know you guys know that voice because we all have it,
Right?
It's the one that is discouraging.
It tells us that we suck and it tells us no.
It just says flat out no sometimes,
Right?
It makes us question all the decisions that we make ongoingly all the time.
I'm so tired of that voice.
I am so sick of that voice.
And the sad thing is it's been there our whole lives and yeah,
We've all had it.
And I'm sorry to say,
But we all have that horrible little voice,
Right?
But I'm here today to say enough is enough.
I'm done.
I'm done.
There are tools.
We do have tools to help us stop paying attention and believing that stupid voice when it says those terrible things like you're going to fail or you're making a fool out of yourself.
Doesn't that sound familiar?
Oh my gosh,
My favorite or one of my favorites is when like I'll be out or something and somebody will just look at me and I'll make up this whole scenario in my head that says I'll make up this whole scenario in my head that says,
Oh my God,
They're looking at their like they don't they think my hair looks dumb or my God,
You know,
Do I look fat today?
You know,
We make stuff up because of that because of that voice.
That's terrible.
So how do we stop that voice?
Well knowing that it's a voice and not who we really are is a start,
Right?
I mean acknowledging that it is a thought and not who we are.
One way to combat those negative thoughts is to do this.
Once you recognize that you're having that ridiculous thought,
Quickly reframe it and turn it around to be something positive.
And it's not the easiest thing in the world.
But if you go out,
You're out and somebody and you somebody looks at you and you say,
Oh my God,
They do I look fat.
They think I look fat.
You make up this whole thing quickly recognize that you got that,
Or that you're thinking that turn it around and say,
Maybe they like my outfit.
You know,
Because we're making it up anyway.
So we might as well make up something positive.
Right?
Or when you hear yourself thinking when you can hear yourself thinking if you do that thing,
Whatever it is,
You're gonna fail.
You can turn that around.
You can say to yourself,
But I'm gonna try anyway.
You know,
I mean,
It the trick is to catch yourself and saying that negative,
Ridiculous thing.
That's it.
The trick is catching yourself saying,
You know,
When you're saying that negative thing,
Catch it.
And we get so used to here's the bottom line,
We get so used to letting those thoughts pass us by.
Like we hear ourselves thinking that those thoughts and we just let it go.
It's inbred.
It's who we are.
And we're not,
I'm not making any of us wrong for doing that because it's just the way it is.
Right?
But,
So here's what we can do.
And this is not like the easiest thing.
Right?
But try monitoring those thoughts for two or three days and shifting whenever you catch it,
Shift those thoughts into a positive one.
I mean,
The reason why I'm saying two or three days is because it's,
It's,
It's a finite amount of time because it's kind of a thing to like really monitor your thoughts.
We have 60 to 80,
000 thoughts a day.
So monitoring every single one is going to be a little hard.
So put it,
Put a time limit on it.
Right?
Try it and shift the thought.
Now I use affirmations.
I mean,
I'll reframe it.
Sometimes I'll be like,
Well,
Laurie,
Seriously,
Maybe they just like your outfit or,
You know,
You know,
I'll,
I'll turn that around.
Right.
But a lot of times I'll use an affirmation.
Okay.
Like when,
When I'm thinking of doing something and that inner,
A friend of mine used to call it the committees.
Right.
So when the committees say,
Uh,
You're,
That's not going to work.
You're,
You're never going to be able to do that.
When that thought comes in,
I'll go to my be all and on,
And I've probably talked about this before,
But my,
Um,
My all time affirmation that works for me,
That just clicks me out of something is,
Laurie,
You are courageous.
I love that.
Right.
And guess what?
You are courageous too.
And here's the thing.
If you're listening to this,
If you're here,
Right here,
Right now,
You are courageous too.
Ooh,
I got chills.
Seriously though,
If you're here,
Right here,
Right now,
You are courageous.
You are a courageous human being.
Isn't that awesome?
I love that.
Okay.
We're going to meditate on this.
Let's do this thing.
Okay.
So let's get ourselves comfortable and close our eyes whenever it feels right for you.
Yeah.
And let's take a nice deep breath in and release.
Perfect.
Perfect.
So,
Before we sit in the stillness,
Let's create an intention for ourselves today.
What is an intention that you can create for yourself today?
Surrounding this.
Quite possibly that intention could be,
I am going to reframe every negative thought that I can catch today.
Or your intention could be,
Today I am a yes person.
Oh gosh.
So what is your intention for the day?
And now,
As we get ready to sit in the stillness for just a few minutes,
What is an affirmation that you can say for yourself during our little meditation here?
What is something that you can say to yourself?
What is an affirmation that you can use as a mantra for today?
Like I said,
Before we are all courageous.
So that could be your affirmation.
That could be your mantra for the meditation and for the rest of the day.
I am courageous.
You can take mine,
Because it's all of ours.
So I will keep the time,
And if you have your affirmation ready,
Let's begin.
I am courageous.
I am courageous.
I am courageous.
I am courageous.
I am courageous.
I am courageous.
I am courageous.
I am courageous.
I am courageous.
Let's start bringing our awareness back to our bodies.
Take a nice deep breath in,
Breathing in that affirmation that we created for ourselves and intention for the day.
So take a deep breath in and breathe out.
Very good.
Whenever you feel comfortable,
You can open your eyes.
You know,
Even if we only sit for just a few minutes a day in meditation or sit quietly saying an affirmation to ourselves,
That even that short period of time can make all the difference in the world in your day.
I love that.
Absolutely love that so much.
It's so important.
Namaste.
