Learn how to breathe Ocean Breath, or Ujjayi Breathing (The Yoga Breathing that you usually use during a Vinyasa Yoga class). Ocean Breath or Ujjayi Breathing is the basis for all of my balancing and relaxing breathing exercises. Breathing Ujjayi stimulates your vagus nerve and thus triggers your parasympathetic nervous system - the rest and digest function of your body. That's why Ocean Breath is extremely valuable in all balancing and relaxation breathing practices.

Welcome to this introduction to ocean breath or Ujjayi breathing.

When we breathe with ocean breath,

We constrict the back of our glottis in our throat so that the air makes a wavy kind of ocean sound when it flows in and out through our nose.

It kind of sounds like this.

Ocean breath is very interesting and very important for breathing exercises out of two reasons.

Reason one,

It helps us to control how much air can flow in and flow out and thus helps us a lot in controlling how fast we breathe.

Reason two,

It stimulates our vagus nerve and the vagus nerve is one of these very important nerves in our nervous system that directly corresponds to our parasympathetic nervous system,

Our rest and digest nervous system.

Now,

If we want to become more balanced in our overall energy,

If we want to release stress,

Become less stressed overall,

It's very very important to train our parasympathetic nervous system to show our body how it's like to be relaxed,

How relaxation actually works and that's why for all of our balancing and relaxation breathing exercises,

We ideally use ocean breath or Ujjayi.

Now,

How do you do it and how can you learn it?

Imagine for a short moment that your hand,

The palm of your hand is a mirror and you want to fog this mirror.

So you move your hand towards your mouth and you try to fog it.

Go ahead,

Try yourself.

Yeah,

Amazing.

Now,

Imagine you don't only try to fog it,

You also try to drag the fog into your mouth with the same sound.

So it's HHHH and HHHH.

Try it out yourself.

Fog it and drag the fog into your mouth.

Beautiful.

Absolutely marvelous.

Yeah,

You got it.

You got it right there.

Perfect.

Now,

As we usually breathe through our nose when we try to relax or balance our energy,

It's important to achieve the same sound when we breathe in and out through our nose,

Not through our mouth.

So just try to have the same sensation in your throat that you have when you fog the mirror or drag the fog into your mouth,

But by breathing in through your nose.

Try it out yourself.

It should sound like this.

Yeah,

Wonderful.

Wonderful.

Now,

It doesn't have to be a very extensive sound.

It doesn't have to be super loud.

It just needs to be audible.

It needs to be there.

And once it's there,

You'll have all the control on the speed of your breath and you will relax your whole system by stimulating your vagus nerve.

Congratulations on learning how to breathe Ujjayi.

And now go ahead and try out some of the balancing and relaxing breathing exercises I have on offer for you.

I'll see you soon.

Breathing together.

Have a gorgeous,

Gorgeous rest of your day.
