Welcome to the Mind Body Spirit podcast.
I'm your host Kim Shepherd,
Combining science and intuition to support your mind,
Body and soul wellness journey.
So podcast two is about learning to trust our intuition.
So life is full of sparks and these moments that ignite passion.
But for many different reasons we've learned not to trust our intuition and most often it's due to our fears and whether these are fears because it's what our parents have passed on from their previous experiences in life or what society has taught us.
But many people choose to not even pursue their passions when it comes to a career choice because they're told that they need to go for a certain type of job or they need to go to college or university to get a degree and perhaps it's following their parents dreams that they have for them.
Or for whatever reason it is,
We've just learned to do what we think we're supposed to do,
You know,
Whether that's about going off to college or whether it means about getting a mortgage or you know,
Having the 2.
5 children,
Whatever it is.
Sometimes we're not actually living a life of purpose and passion and spark because we're basing a lot of our decisions based on fear or based on what we think we're supposed to be doing and not what we truly actually want.
So many people that I see clinically as a naturopath,
They might be working a nine-to-five job because this has taught them that this is job security.
You know,
If they go to this job,
Even if they really hate it,
It might be that they earn really good money or perhaps they don't earn good money,
But it is a full-time position which means that they can get sick pay and holiday pay.
So there's many different reasons that contribute to us not following our spark and our passion,
But when we're not following that,
That's when we can lead to dis-ease or disharmony within the body.
And when we've been on this path for a while,
We forget how to trust our intuition and our intuition can guide us to a path of healing,
Can guide us to our path of purpose,
But also to be able to support our mental well-being as well because many people do at some point in life experience anxiety or depression,
But if we don't know how to follow that spark and to trust our intuition,
That's where we can get stuck within that headspace of being,
You know,
Chronically depressed or anxious or whatever else comes through,
Panic attacks,
You name it.
So for me being human,
I've been on that journey as well,
You know,
I've experienced anxiety and I've had panic attacks and I was depressed many years ago even after my mum passed away and there's lots of different experiences that will trigger these emotions,
Which we're all meant to experience,
But it's whether we feel like we're stuck within that headspace.
And for me learning to trust my intuition was after one of the most challenging experiences of my life and I've cared for my mum in the past when she went through her cancer journey and you know,
That was part of igniting my passion in becoming the naturopath that I am today.
I was a naturopathic student back then,
But this particular story anyway was after my husband was in hospital.
And he'd been in hospital,
It was a total of about three weeks he was in there,
But for two and a half weeks I had no idea what was happening with his body.
He was experiencing pain,
But then he's experiencing these spasms on top of the pain.
So it's two different types of pain and all of the drugs that they were giving him wasn't working and these spasms were lasting for up to 14 hours a day and it was a really traumatizing experience for many of us involved and we didn't know if he was going to be able to walk again.
He was bed-bound and basically screaming in agony for up to 14 hours a day or that would be when that spasm subsided and who knows how long that one subsided before the next spasm then came along.
And it was just,
It was a horrible experience,
But as tough and as challenging as it was,
I'm incredibly grateful for the experience as well.
Because my husband who he,
You know,
He's not intuitive or spiritual like myself.
He has his own different belief systems in life and we respect each other's beliefs and our boundaries and during his hospital stay,
He doesn't remember this,
But I know it was my moment in life.
It was my,
What I refer to as my quantum experience,
My moment in life where I just knew that I could not view life the same way again.
So he was in hospital and he was going through all of these pains and he had this moment where he was laying in bed and I'm sitting in the chair next to him and he said to me that when he closed his eyes he could see these three women and he explained to me their name,
What they looked like,
What they were wearing,
The room that they were in and he explained all to me in really vivid detail.
And he said when his eyes were closed these three women stopped the spasms so he could handle the pain.
So I said,
Okay,
Well close your eyes again and ask them to take away the pain completely.
So he did that for a few minutes and then when he opened his eyes again,
He said whilst his eyes were closed the pain had completely stopped.
Now this for me was a moment where he'd been taking so many different types of pain medication to try and figure out what was going on with him.
And it was at a point where the most of the nurses did not even believe that he was actually in pain and honestly I don't understand that because when you know someone well enough,
You know that they are in chronic pain.
But my point is,
Is what he experienced in that moment changed my life because it was an experience that I was meant to go through.
And so for me,
I've grown up believing in spirits in life after death and being able to communicate with my spirit guides.
But this particular moment I witnessed my husband communicating with his spirit guides.
And so when pain medication was not working,
They weren't able to obviously find the right one because they had no idea what was going on.
But he had this moment where for the first time in a couple of weeks his pain had actually completely stopped.
And I just knew in that moment that I will never doubt my intuition.
I will never not believe in the universe and spirit guides because that was a moment that I needed to go through.
So we have these predetermined or predestined moments in life that we choose to experience to help solidify our belief in ourselves within our intuition and within the universe.
And most often these events will occur during these traumatizing times because it's this trauma that helps to shift us through these paths that we're walking in life.
And even though he doesn't remember the experience,
He believes me that it happened.
But from that moment,
I just need to trust my intuition a hundred percent.
And as humans we like to be able to understand,
You know,
How we're going to get from A to B.
But I've learned that when I don't know the path,
Whatever my gut tells me,
I will listen to that and I don't need to know how it's going to work out.
I just know that my gut will guide me.
And I've used it in so many different situations where we've been very fortunate that my gut has been able to to guide us along the way.
But as an example,
The ones actually coming to mind is when we were on holidays.
We chose to go on this holiday over to the United States.
I think it was our honeymoon actually.
And we got onto,
We got into,
What city was it?
Chicago.
It was a stopover.
No,
It was Detroit to go to Canada.
And they were grounding all of the planes because there was this huge blizzard coming in.
And we didn't know whether we should go or not because we didn't know if our luggage was going to make it.
And they said that this was the last plane to hop on before they're going to ground all of the planes.
And you know,
This is choosing to fly into a blizzard as well.
And being from Australia,
I mean,
I don't even know if we have any airports in the snow.
When we go to the snow,
We drive to the snow.
We don't land there.
So I checked in with my gut instinct and it said,
Okay,
We're going to hop on this plane.
Even though,
You know,
It was scary.
And the idea of flying into a snowstorm,
We just listened to it.
And we're so glad that we did because one,
We actually made it to our destination.
Our luggage didn't make it,
But we chose just to buy some clothes to keep us warm in the meantime.
And it wasn't until we eventually got to New York later in the week that we got our luggage back.
But it was an incredible experience.
If we hadn't have taken that flight,
We would have completely missed Niagara Falls.
And it was an adventure.
It was an adventure even just going shopping for our clothes and having this beautiful experience and witnessing Niagara Falls frozen with all those gorgeous,
Colorful lights.
It was an absolutely amazing experience.
Then even when it comes to my intuition,
I've learnt that when I'm in meditation,
A lot of insight comes through in those meditations.
And after completing some courses as a beginner's mediumship and then an advanced psychic mediumship world summer,
Which was a life-changing experience as well,
Because really connecting in and making some deeper connections and meeting a lot more spirit guides.
After completing those courses,
I kept seeing in my meditations that there was a connection to Bali.
Now,
I knew within my gut that I wasn't meant to go to Bali,
But there was a connection there.
And I've been seeing these images in my meditations for months.
Then I turned up to a course,
And it was an Australian Bushflower Essence course.
And we got a chance to mingle with some people before the course actually started.
So I started talking to the lady in front of me and asked her,
So tell me a bit about yourself.
And she said that she had just moved back to Australia five days ago after living in Bali as a healer for five years.
And instantly I knew that was my connection.
And I knew that within that gut,
Within the solar plexus,
That she was my connection to Bali.
So I asked her,
So tell me,
What is it that you do?
And she started talking to me about Reiki.
Now,
I had known just a tiny little bit about Reiki.
It was really not a big part of my life at all at that point.
But I knew that as soon as she did that next workshop,
I wanted to learn Reiki from her.
Then in other meditations,
I was guided by my spirit guides that yoga would be a healing part of my journey.
So I came out of that meditation and I contacted a friend who had been studying yoga and raving about this online yoga course that she was doing,
Which was with My Health Yoga.
So as soon as I came out of my meditation,
I paid for a course upfront because I knew within my gut that yoga would be healing.
I'd done a few yoga classes many years before.
It had nothing,
It really had probably been at least five or seven years.
I knew I really enjoyed yoga,
But that part of my life had been really stressful and I hadn't been looking after myself well.
So I knew that if I paid for the course upfront,
I was completely committing to it.
And honestly,
I loved every single part of that course.
I learned so much about myself and my healing and learning to trust my intuition as well.
So I find many of the courses that I've done to support myself has helped to build and to learn to trust my intuition even more deeply.
But even though I was doing it as a part of my own healing at the time,
In hindsight,
I can see not only was I healing myself,
But it was aligning me with my path and purpose to be able to support people on their healing journey as well.
And now one of the things I do is support people to learn to trust their intuition,
Because if you can trust your intuition,
It can get you out of a really sticky situation.
And it can also guide you to absolutely amazing experiences in life.
And it can guide you to courses that you never thought of doing.
I never planned on any of the courses I've studied except for naturopathy.
I knew I wanted to study the science of how to heal the body.
And I just learnt later on as part of my healing and intuitive journey that I was able to then combine the science and intuition.
So I often get these intuitive hits when it comes to supporting my patients naturopathically.
And so this is another way I've learnt to trust my gut.
I remember I had a patient come through who she's been progressing really well.
She has a long-term chronic disease,
And it's about supporting her to help reduce pain and to manage her comfort levels.
And she'd been doing amazingly well for months.
And then randomly,
She just started.
.
.
She had this moment where everything for a few days just went downhill.
So as we're sitting in my naturopathic space,
I chose to check in with my intuition.
Okay,
What is it that I need to be aware of?
Because nothing in their life had changed.
Everything was still the same.
And my intuition said to research the sun.
So I decided to look up some research articles on the sun and how it can affect their condition.
And that's where my intuition was that initial spark that I was able to follow.
And then I was able to use my science brain to investigate it further.
And I discovered that the sun,
And when it has these coronal mass ejections,
This radiation comes from the sun and it makes its way to the earth.
And depending on which part of the earth this radiation connects with,
It depends on who on the planet is going to feel the impact of that more.
But this particular radiation can flare up inflammation in the body.
So there was actual scientific research to validate how the sun can flare up the condition within their body.
But it also flares up other conditions as well,
Like migraines or fibromyalgia or any other disease or illness within the body that has an inflammatory component to it.
So autoimmune conditions.
So I love that I just learnt to listen to my intuition as to what could support them.
Because this was not something that my naturopathic course had taught me.
It's about,
Okay,
Let's harness him and listen to our intuition to support our patients.
This has just been my own personal journey of developing my intuition and learning to trust it.
So now then when I have patients flare up,
I can look at the activity of the sun and whether that's going to be impacting my client's health for those few days.
Because it usually doesn't last for a long period of time.
But once patients are also aware that it's only going to last for a couple of days,
It gives them this hope and relief knowing that when they feel that way,
It's not going to last forever.
There's a light at the end of the tunnel.
And because so often we need hope,
But this is what our intuition does as well.
It helps to give us hope and it ignites that spark within us.
So I'm going to ask you to ask yourself in this moment,
Have you been following your spark?
Have you been trusting in your intuition?
And our intuition,
Even when we ask ourselves these questions,
We often hear the answer before we've even finished asking the questions.
So if you wanted to ask yourself,
You might just say it out loud or in your head,
Should I go and learn this course?
Often before you've even finished saying the word course,
You've heard a yes or a no within your mind.
And that's what we need to listen to.
Quite often our ego then steps in and it challenges us as to how much we're actually going to listen to our intuition.
And I don't see the ego as a negative thing.
I see it as a teacher.
So if you hear that initial yes,
Or you feel that excitement or that spark within your gut,
Within your solar plexus,
That's the feeling that we need to trust.
If we then listen to that second voice,
The ego that says,
No,
We're not smart enough,
You don't have enough money,
You don't have enough time,
Oh,
We need to use that money for someone else within the family.
Like there's all these excuses that pop into our head that we talk ourselves out from following our sparks and our passions and trusting in our intuition.
I ask you to just trust that initial gut instinct.
As long as you're not doing something that is going to be harmful in any way to yourself or other people.
If you're just asking yourself,
Hey,
I'd like to go learn how to paint,
Or should I go for a walk?
That is not going to cause any harm to you.
That is you just listening to that intuition.
And the more you ask yourself and listen to that initial response,
That first answer,
That first voice,
That's where we're going to help to start to slowly build your intuition.
So if you do have any questions about this as well,
Please get in touch.
And I hope that you really do learn to listen to trust in that feeling,
To trust your intuition.
We have this innate ability of being able to guide ourselves through life,
Which will steer us away from danger or will steer us to things that will be that light for ourselves on our path,
That will be the light for someone else on their journey,
Because we're just living that authentic life that we're here to live and not living a life that is someone else's rules or someone else's standards or expectations.
It's just being ourselves and showing up as ourselves and being comfortable in our own skin and being comfortable in making decisions that feel right.
Another way you can also learn to trust your intuition is by how you feel around other people.
You can,
If you're in a room and someone enters into your space,
Without them talking,
You know that you either want to spend time with them or you'd like them to leave or you want to leave that room,
Because it's that feeling and it's that energy.
And when we learn to step away from those things that don't feel right,
That don't resonate with us,
That helps us to calm the nervous system down,
Because part of the process of trusting our intuition,
The nervous system naturally starts to calm down as well.
But then if we follow that spark and we spend time with people who help to make us feel good about ourselves,
They don't wear us down and they help to lift us up,
That will help us to then attract more of those positive experiences in life.
So I hope you enjoy this journey of learning to trust your intuition and I hope you have fun with it.
And if you need any support,
As always,
Please reach out.
Until next time,
Bye for now.
