Hi everyone,
It's Kim from Meditation with Heart and today's practice is a meditation to help you stay calm and wise during this coronavirus outbreak.
Now I have been somewhat fearful and a little anxious about this virus and how I could contract it,
Will my family members get sick and what will it do to New York City?
This is my home.
I've also felt somewhat helpless because this isn't the sort of disaster where volunteering can help or even donating money.
So what I've been doing the last few days is meditating and when I say what the type of meditation I've been doing really is simply to pause,
To put my hand on my heart,
To take a few breaths.
And what I've also been doing is reading what public health officials have to say,
What people in the medical field are telling us about the best thing to do in this time.
And the best thing to do for yourself and for everyone else is to stay well,
Take precautions and don't get sick.
This matters because in a system that might get overloaded and may have too many patients,
The less of us that get sick the better.
If you're someone who's not at high risk for dying of this illness,
Then even better,
If you don't get sick then you're not going to take a bed from someone who really,
Really needs it.
So practicing self-care,
Practicing self-compassion by taking this seriously,
Washing your hands,
Doing all the things they're telling us to do,
Really can take care of yourself and other people.
So in a certain way this terrible virus is really a teaching on our deep connection with all living creatures and how all of our actions impact one another.
So let's do a brief meta practice to help calm our mind,
To bring compassion to ourselves and each other.
And you can do this wherever you are.
You don't have to find a special seat.
If you're at work you can do this with your eyes open or if you're at a coffee shop,
Just put your headphones in.
Go ahead and take a few breaths slowly.
If you can,
Through your nose.
And exhaling slowly,
Bringing your belly button toward your spine.
You can go ahead and do that two more times at your own pace.
Noticing your feet,
Feeling your seat,
Feeling your belly,
Relaxing your shoulder blades,
Bringing your attention to your heart center.
And repeating these phrases as though you're giving yourself a gift.
May I be safe.
May I be healthy.
May I be free from fear.
May I be safe.
May I be healthy.
May I be free from fear.
May I be safe.
May I be healthy.
May I be free from fear.
You can just take a few moments to silently offer these phrases to yourself.
Thank you.
May I be safe,
May I be healthy,
May I be free from fear.
Noticing your feet,
Feeling your seat,
Your belly,
Your shoulder blades,
Noticing your forehead and your cheeks and your jaw.
Now I'd like you to call to mind someone in the medical profession.
This could be one of your doctors or your dentist.
It could be someone in your family,
Maybe someone is an EMT that you know or nurse or a doctor,
Psychiatrist or just think of people in health care.
And we're going to offer these same phrases to this person in health care.
May you be safe,
May you be healthy,
May you be free from fear,
KA May you be safe,
May you be healthy,
Can you be free from fear.
And you'll be save.
May you be healthy.
May you be free from fear.
Continuing on your own so you're giving a gift to this person so you're giving a gift to this person moving your attention away from this medical person feeling your feet,
Your seat,
Your belly,
Your shoulder blades bringing your attention to your heart center and now considering all the beings on the planet everyone above you and below,
To your right,
To your left in front of you,
Behind you radiating these offerings may we be safe,
May we be healthy may we be free from fear may we be safe,
May we be healthy may we be free from fear may we be safe,
May we be healthy may we be free from fear just taking a moment to silently offer that may we be safe,
May we be healthy may we be free from fear you can move your attention away from this sense of everyone drop the phrases just noticing your feet and your seat,
Your belly putting your hand on your heart maybe just letting yourself be for a moment taking a couple of breaths and I encourage you to do this practice as often as necessary to set aside your cell phone and turn off your television and your computer just for a few minutes so you can come back to your heart and your wisdom and your good sense and practice self-care for yourself and for everyone else okay everyone,
