So welcome everybody today we will talk about easy ways to tackle teeth grinding and I'm joined by Julia Buritz the founder of Kiva Freund and Joyoga Hello,

Julia.

Hi Felix.

Thank you very much.

I'm very happy to be here with you Yes,

That's great.

Me too.

And Julia what is what is easy when it comes to tackling teeth grinding because Dealing with teeth grinding is is very hard for a lot of people.

It's it's very painful and very annoying Mm-hmm so for us We always support a natural way.

So many people don't know that teeth grinding is caused by snoring by the oxygen decrease in the blood and therefore there comes this grinding and and clenching of the teeth just to protect the body and the body wants to survive and that's why It decides should I should I damage my teeth or should I survive and of course it wants to survive?

Yeah,

So the first thing is I'm to see are you snoring and to to work on the snoring and That's the first very easy thing But many people think that's very hard to work on the snoring.

I can say it's not So it does one need to like if one grinds their teeth does that mean they're definitely Snoring as well,

Even if they don't know that they are not in all cases,

But it's very often connected Because the snoring and the teeth grinding we call it praxis There is one root cause and the root cause is the tongue,

Right?

So when you work on your tongue,

Especially on your tongue resting position You can work on your snoring and also on your teeth grinding and clenching So when you say the tongue does that mean and you said resting position?

Does that mean I mean what about the tongue?

It's not resting where it should be or yeah,

That's that's the question So the first thing is that you should ask yourself.

Where is my tongue resting?

When you don't eat or talk,

That's the first thing so you you should Really feel your tongue versus tip of your tongue.

Is it connected to the to the teeth?

Or is it lying on the floor of your mouth or is it touching the palate?

So that's the first thing you need to be aware of your tongue resting position So generating a general sense of awareness of what is going on with my tongue and Instead of striving for perfection straight away.

I guess first knowing What's actually going on exactly right exactly But then if we were to talk about perfection What is perfection and where does it where should the tongue be to start tackling snoring and teeth grinding and all of that?

Well,

So the tongue should be at the palate and It's very very important.

That's the whole tongue touches the palate from the from right behind the teeth back to the soft palate Because when you when you feel with your tongue the palate there is a hard hard part and then there is some muscle part or mucosa and The whole tongue should come up to the palate and touch it.

That would be the normal natural tongue resting position,

But it's very very hard to To learn in the first moment when you're not And you don't For example when your tongue is always lying on the floor of your mouth It's very hard to bring it up in the first time.

So you need to To strengthen your tongue to bring it up And how do you do that?

Yes,

So we do it with special exercises the exercises the exercises for each muscle in the tongue For the middle of the tongue the side parts of the tongue and the tip of the tongue in the back part The back part is the most important and then it gets stronger and it gets in balance with all the other muscles in the in the mouth face system and then you can bring the tongue in the normal healthy tongue resting position sounds great and Julia so people who've never heard about this from their dentist and are wondering where is this information coming from?

What is it based on?

What would you say to them?

Yes,

Normally I'm a speech and language pathologist and an orophageal myologist So we are working always with the tongue and this knowledge about where should the tongue be?

This is very controversial discussed But the newest studies show especially dr.

Engelke from Germany.

He did some some studies and This is based on the natural the natural Position yeah This is what coming out.

So it's not just the tip of the tongue which comes up to the palate.

It's the whole tongue That's most important Right and you can look at studies of course,

But also just lived experience from from your own life And I know for myself that it makes a big difference when the tongue is resting up there Exactly because the tongue has Has one benefit because when it's resting there it can hold the the lower jaw in its position and therefore the The jaw muscles the chewing muscles can relax and when you don't bring the tongue in the rest right resting position Your jaw muscles always have to work And they get in some kind of burnout It's jaw stress What you're really doing then with putting the tongue there is you're rebalancing the the muscles of the orophageal system,

Right?

Exactly Exactly,

Because the tongue is connected to all muscles and not only to all muscles It's all in the interface.

It's connected to all muscles in the whole body especially to the toes Yeah,

I love that example that you always give with the big toe,

Right?

Yeah When you're chewing it changes in tension Yeah,

Yeah when you're chewing when you stand up and chew Your big toe has to vary in its tension to keep upright.

Yeah to stabilize the body But that is something we would never pick up on unless we're aware of it.

I assume.

Yeah,

You can feel it Yeah,

When you are aware of it,

Yeah Great and then also I guess the the fascia come in into play as well,

Right because They they can't be tense if you want to stop grinding Yeah,

Exactly because the fascia they always react to our emotions and And there are many many emotions stored in the fascia,

Especially in the jaw fascia and there are many fascia So that's very important to make them healthy to make them smooth and to relax it and Fascia being the connective tissue over the muscles for people who are not aware with the tongue They are a connected system throughout the whole body Yeah Yes,

And then also Julia it's I think it's quite important to to relax as well,

Isn't it for teeth grinding because grinding Symbolizes tension very much.

Of course.

So when you go to sleep at night and you're very very stressed It doesn't benefit for your teeth and your jaw relaxation So the first thing is to see why are you stressed?

But what causes the stress in your life to and to calm down?

To look at your At your Themes or topics in life and The more you you see what what is stressing you the more you can Work on it and the less It affects you And when you are more relaxed This affects your sleeping Regeneration Yeah Would that be enough to tackling if someone is quite a severe grinder Would it would it be enough to solve let's say certain issues or would they have to be combined with?

Putting the tongue in the right place and Doing exercises and that kind of stuff But from my from my experience there some people who grind from time to time Especially when they are have lots of stress And maybe they have the right tongue resting position But there is the stress which affects that jaw system in a in a huge way but normally from my experience When you are only working on the stress or only working on the tongue There's not this good coming out.

So it's always our Goal to work holistically and to put all this levels together So work on the mind work on the body and on the emotions Yeah,

Very nice and I guess doing meditation right as on inside timer or something like that Is really good to calm down at the end of your day To just start to restore the balance and maybe also gain awareness on some topics to Stressing you at and to really feel the tensions which are stored in your jaw Because normally you don't feel it anymore when you're used to this this or that level of tension That's the first thing to become aware of it Absolutely,

Yeah Just general awareness to then start,

You know that you can then know what you're up against and you can start to To feel it as you said instead of just thinking about it.

Hmm,

And then very guilty very guilty of that myself Yeah,

And then do something about it,

Right?

That's the thing we can we can know it and be aware of it But then we have to do something.

That's the thing Great well,

I think those were very good insights already Do you have any more tips or you're happy with what we have put together here?

So I think that's for the first thing really really um Great steps to work on the teeth grinding for the first time and as soon as you have your tongue in the right resting position Um,

And you have relaxed your fascia and you work on your stress you have done a lot Yes,

Always the easier things Which are have very huge Impact on it.

Absolutely.

Great.

Well,

I hope this was helpful for anyone listening.

Yeah.

Thank you,

Julia for all your insights Really appreciate that.

Thank you very much felix and thank you all for listening to us Thank you very much.

Take care.

Take care.
