Recovery from surgery is a physical, emotional, and energetic healing process, and takes resilience. Gentle, well-paced guidance to relax, acknowledge your own experience, and treat yourself with compassion. I created this meditation, with love and kindness, for a friend who went through surgery, but is an excellent resource for anybody who needs it. You may find yourself becoming relaxed as a result of this meditation, and it is perfectly safe to drift off to sleep if rest is what you need. This track appears on the "Women's Wellbeing Meditations" album.

Okay,

So doing whatever you have to do to get comfortable.

Remembering this is a time to be really gentle with your body.

And so really making sure that you're in the right position,

You're warm,

You've got pillows or blankets and maybe something set up in case you need to change position.

And then settling down.

Going to start with a relaxation.

And the intention today is really to treat your body with kindness.

Your body's had a shock,

Physically,

Energetically,

Emotionally even.

And so kindness is the only appropriate way to treat yourself just now.

Remembering that by looking after yourself now,

You're setting yourself up for a strong recovery.

And with this intention in mind,

Bringing your focus to your breath.

And just noticing as you breathe in and out.

Just noticing how you feel.

And if there are any sensations in the body today,

Perhaps associated with the surgery,

Maybe something like that,

Just being aware of them.

And at the same time,

Being aware of your breathing.

So we're going to do a body scan and as we go to each part of the body,

You can just imagine that that part of the body is very heavy and is sinking as if into a cloud or cotton wool.

First noticing the head,

Noticing the weight of the head.

Letting it really rest on whatever's supporting it.

Sinking down.

Now noticing your neck and shoulders.

Again,

Letting them just sink as if into a cloud of cotton wool.

And as this cloud takes your weight,

It also protects you.

So that not only are you relaxing,

You're entering a state of gentle protection.

Bringing your attention now to your arms.

Noticing how heavy your arms are.

Allowing them to sink into whatever's supporting them all the way down to your fingertips.

Coming now to your chest and upper back.

Feeling the soft weight as they sink into the support.

Just thinking of that cloud of cotton wool.

Now noticing your belly,

Your lower back.

And if at any point you get distracted by the sensations in your body,

Just allow that process to happen.

And actually allow yourself to explore the sensation.

Try to find exactly where it begins and ends.

And then allowing yourself once again to come back to the relaxation.

To bring your attention to your abdomen and lower back.

And to allow them to just sink down into whatever's supporting you.

Thinking cloud,

Thinking cotton wool.

And finally bringing your attention down to your legs.

Letting your legs grow heavy.

Letting them sink into whatever's supporting you.

So that now you're completely supported and protected by this cloud of cotton wool.

And then taking your attention to the area of your body where you've had your surgery.

And you may want to place your hands over it or you may not.

And just remembering your intention of kindness.

Your body's had a shock and it's had a sudden change.

So just allow your kind thoughts to go to it.

And if that's not easy,

Just be with what is going on.

So it may be that there's a lot of energy concentrated here.

There might be sensations.

And there might be thoughts or emotions connected with your surgery.

And even if that's not completely comfortable,

It is okay.

It's okay for you to have these thoughts and feelings.

And it's okay to acknowledge them.

This is something significant which has happened.

And of course your sensations,

Thoughts and emotions are going to be heightened at such a moment.

This is the first phase of healing.

So just notice those for a moment.

And acknowledge that it's natural to go through such feelings as part of your recovery.

And also that you will and are recovering.

Every moment you're healing.

And if you're ready now,

You might be willing to offer some or all of these sensations,

Thoughts and feelings to the universe for healing.

And to invite the universe and all the energies in the universe to send you healing energy now.

So that you may heal on all the levels.

Just imagine what that energy might feel like if it were to flow to you now.

And what thoughts,

Images and impressions might you get with that?

Or would you just know that the healing energy was flowing in?

So you can spend a little bit of time now.

Just inviting that healing energy in.

And if anything arises which isn't easy,

Just acknowledge it,

Open it to the healing energy.

And allow the healing energy to wash over it.

Knowing that it will always work in the way that is best for you.

Thank you.

Thank you.

Thank you.

Thank you.

Thank you.

Thank you.

Thank you.

Thank you.

Thank you.

Thank you.

And now allow the flow of healing energy to subside.

Knowing as you do so that you can always invite it back whenever you need it.

Noticing now how you feel.

What your thoughts are.

And knowing that whatever they are,

That's okay.

That's just where you are at this moment.

Coming back to your breathing now.

And when you're ready take a really deep breath in.

And then exhale until your lungs are empty,

If that's comfortable for you.

And allow the air to flow out and then allow fresh oxygen to come in,

Your body knows what to do.

This is the end of the meditation.

Whenever you're ready you can open your eyes and come back to the room.

But if you'd like to rest a little while longer,

Then by all means you should listen to your body's wisdom and do so.

Just exactly what I needed to hear as I recover from unexpected open heart surgery. Was doing really well then hit a bump in the road and all these unexpected unexplained sad feelings washed over me. This made me understand that what I was going through was normal and expected. Surgery is more than just one aspect of things. It involves many layers Thank you so much for helping me handle the things maybe the medical community had not gone over.
