by Katrina Bos
This was a live reading of the Radiance Sutras on Insight Timer. The first 25 minutes is filled with beautiful tantric sutras and discussion. Then, magic entered the class and hilarious laughter ensued creating one of our favourite healing experiences. Then, we finish with more wonderful tantric readings. Insight, laughter and so much fun!
Transcript
This class has a bit of an intro because it didn't turn out exactly the way I thought it was going to.
This is about the third class in a series of readings of the Radiant Sutras.
And it begins normally reading passages,
Sharing with the class it was all very lovely and wonderful.
And then something went amuck in my mind and I started inserting the word liver for river.
At a certain point in this class I share this with everyone.
And then all craziness ensues.
So this recording is the beginning of that class.
And then I will jump in like I am right now.
And attempt to read to you the chat that everyone there participated in that caused me to fall into laughter for a solid twenty minutes.
So here we go.
So we're doing readings out of this book called the Radiant Sutras by Lauren Roche.
And it's a translation of the Vijñana Bhairava Tantra.
A beautiful ancient tantric text.
So what Lauren did is he took the original Vijñana Bhairava Tantra and he meditated on them and he danced with them and he played with them and he studied the Sanskrit with other Sanskrit scholars and really tried to understand the heart of it.
And he wrote this translation which is so much more poetic.
And the beautiful things about poems is they talk around something that cannot be described.
And it's one of the foundational things about tantra.
It's the greatest experience we'll ever have is one we can't even explain to anyone.
It's like we do techniques we hear ideas,
We try things and something changes inside of us and it just shifts us and now we're a little bit different.
And if someone was to say well what happened?
You could say well I did this thing or I read this or I tried this and now I'm different.
That's all we can say.
And that's the beauty of poetry.
That's why Rumi,
That's why all the great mystics spoke in poetry.
Because they're trying to explain something that's ineffable,
Indescribable,
Something beyond our linear mind.
So this is sort of the context of this and there's many translations of this set of sutras.
But this one's one that I know for me I met Lauren years ago at a retreat.
I didn't even mean to.
I was actually going to see someone else and he was one of many teachers there.
And that's when I first heard him read this.
It was like there's something deep inside of me said you know I know this.
It's essentially a conversation between the human and God or Devi and Bhairava.
And it's this conversation that says,
Devi begins with saying what are we doing here?
Why are we on this amazing planet?
What is it that we are discovering?
Why do I feel so alive?
Why is it so confusing here?
All these things.
And Bhairava gives their answer.
And read the last two pages of the banter verses because it's a beautiful introduction into the next bits that we're going to do.
And it's a nice review for all of us.
I am everywhere infusing everything to find me become absorbed in intense experience go all the way be drenched in the energies of life enter the world beyond separation the light of a candle reveals a room the rays of the sun reveal the world so does the divine feminine illumine the way to me she who shines everywhere sings you hold the mysteries in your hand of will knowledge and action reveal to me this path of illumined knowledge and I just want to interject here so this is Bhairava speaking to you I long to merge with you be filled with your nourishing essence lead me into joyous union with the life of the universe that I may know it fully realize it deeply and breathe in luminous truth So that's the end of the banter verses and then we begin what they call the yukti verses There's a meditation on here of mine called a tantric meditation to experience oneness and it's based on this these first five verses it's the practice of these first five practices kind of all rolled into a single meditation so if later if you want to try this that's what this is where it came from that's where this meditation came from so these first few verses are all about the movement of the breath as it moves through our body and the gap in between the inhale and the exhale that's what it's all about because of course the question is what did Bhairava say?
I want to be immersed in you I want to feel you,
I want to be a part of you so the point of all of this is always what practices can we do what can we do to truly feel immersed in life right,
To bring the divine into us and allow the divine to experience the world through us okay,
So I'm going to read probably five of the stanzas so if you don't have the book or even if you have the book and you want to just close your eyes and listen,
Again the point is to have an experience you can't explain it can be very subtle but try to relieve our mind of any analysis and just let the words speak to our,
Like the cells of our body instead the one who is intimate to all beings replies Beloved,
Your questions require the answers that come through direct living experience.
The way of experience begins with a breath,
Such as the breath you are breathing now,
Awakening into luminous reality may dawn into momentary throb between any two breaths.
Exhaling,
Breath is released and flows out.
There is a pulse as it turns to flow in.
In that turn you are empty.
Enter that emptiness as the source of all life.
Inhaling,
Breath flows in,
Filling nourishing.
Just as it turns to flow out there is a flash of pure joy.
Life is renewed.
Radiant One The life essence carries on its play through the pulsing rhythm of outward and inward movement this is the ceaseless throb,
The rhythm of life,
Terrifying in its eternity,
Exquisite in its constancy.
The inhalation the return movement of breath sustains life the outgoing breath purifies life these are the two poles between which respiration goes on unceasingly.
Between them is every delight you could desire.
Even when the senses are turned outward your attention on the external world,
Attend also to the inner throb,
The pulsing of the creative impulse within you.
Enter these turning points where the rhythms of life transform into each other.
Breath flows in,
Filling in this moment,
Drink eternity.
Breath flows out,
Emptying,
Emptying offering itself to infinity.
Cherishing these moments,
Mind dissolves into heart heart dissolves into space,
Body becomes a vibrating field,
Pulsating between fullness and emptiness.
At the end of the exhale breath surrenders to quietude,
For a moment you hang in the balance,
Suspended in the fertile spaciousness that is the source of breath.
At the end of the inhale,
Filled with the song of the breath there is a moment where you are simply holding the tender mystery.
In these interludes experience opens into exquisite vastness with no beginning and no end.
Embrace this infinity without reservation.
You are its vessel.
So the exercise for number one is to focus on prana.
And prana being life force,
Breath everything we take into our life.
But the focus on the first one the first practice,
Even as we are sitting right now is actually just simply feeling your breath moving in and out without changing it,
Without doing anything just feeling the breath and actually kind of dissolving into the idea that we are alive.
You know one of the practices is to go outside and breathe in the air.
You know that feeling when you kind of go like this is a very powerful thing.
Allowing that to move through us.
A lot of tantra is about,
Not just tantra but all spiritual practice is about really experiencing the subtle things that we take for granted.
The simple movement of the breath in and out of the body calms our nerves,
It does all these beautiful things and it is our life force.
And sometimes all we can do is just even to focus on that.
It's almost like going to a beach or lying under a tree in a hammock and just feeling the breath just right and how calming that is and how beautiful that is.
We can enter a state of bliss just simply focusing on the breath without any other interesting technique.
So I'm just going to re-read the first stanza or the first verse I guess.
Just while we do that,
Just really in your own mind just notice your breath,
Like don't change it.
Just notice the breath in your own body.
The one who is intimate to all beings replies,
Beloved,
Your questions require the answers that come through direct living experience.
The way of experience begins with the breath,
Such as the breath you are breathing now.
Awakening into luminous reality may dawn in the momentary throb between any two breaths.

It's a beautiful part of the meditation is feeling that gap,
Like even as you're breathing right now.
And to take this out into your life too,
Right?
As you're breathing in,
There's this moment where you're no longer breathing in and notice this beautiful moment.
And then as you exhale you release it all and again there's this beautiful turning point in the gap.
This alone is one of my favorite meditations on the mat or just in life.
And you just imagine,
You know,
You're sitting in traffic or you're waiting somewhere or you're just sitting on a park bench and all you do is just feel these beautiful parts of your breath.
And then all of a sudden the sun becomes a little bit brighter and you hear the birds and you're just so present.
The second one,
The practice,
He calls it Marut and it's all about awakening to the electricity of life,
Like being aware that we are alive.
This is no small thing,
But if you even think of it,
If you even think of your nervous system we are an electrical conduit.
Like we are literally the most amazing electrical system there is.
So,
Ready?
Radiant one.
The life essence carries on its play through the pulsing rhythm of outward and inward movement.
This is the ceaseless throb,
The rhythm of life,
Terrifying in its eternity,
Exquisite in its constancy.
The inhalation,
The return movement of breath sustains life.
The outgoing breath purifies life.
These are the two poles between which respiration goes on unceasingly.
Between them is every delight you could desire.
Even when the senses are turned outward your attention on the external world attend also to the inner throb,
The pulsing of the creative impulse within you.
It's a beautiful thing,
I love that when we meditate and we look at the inhalation no matter what meditation you are doing,
That every inhalation is this nourishing essence coming into your body and that the exhalation is a purification.
It's where we release everything that we no longer require.
I think of that often when I meditate.
I also understand that the gap is infinity.
It is God.
It's sort of this beautiful play between the physical and the divine in every breath.
The third one is the focus in the book is Shakti,
The power of life,
The thing that just makes us feel alive and amazing.
And imagine this gap being like little pools of water where things collect and nourish and do interesting things.
And so in the gap,
Imagine even as I'm reading and your breath is continuing,
Every time you come into that point between the inhale and the exhale or the exhale and the inhale,
Imagine your mantra is,
I am filled with the power of life.
Enter these turning points where the rhythm of life transform into each other.
Breath flows in,
Filling,
Filling.
In this moment,
Drink eternity.
Breath flows out,
Emptying,
Emptying,
Offering itself to infinity.
Cherishing these moments,
Mind dissolves into heart.
Heart dissolves into space.
Body becomes a vibrating field pulsating between fullness and emptiness.
I'm going to continue to the next one.
And this one,
The practice is called kumbuka,
Kumbaka.
And it's all about imagining,
Like kumbaka means like a jug or a vessel or something that holds something.
So now imagine in that gap you inhale and there's like a pot that all this beautiful life force goes into and it's kind of held there.
Not like held but just held.
And we just sort of feel that beautiful filled pot.
Okay,
Ready?
Feeling that,
Feeling that vessel,
Feeling that beautiful place where our life force fills.
At the end of the exhale,
Breath surrenders to quietude.
For a moment,
You hang in the balance,
Suspended in the fertile spaciousness that is the source of breath.
At the end of the inhale breath,
There is a moment where you are simply holding the tender mystery.
In these interludes,
Experience opens into exquisite vastness with no beginning and no end.
Embrace this infinity without reservation.
You are its vessel.
Okay,
We're going to go forward a little.
So now they're moving more into,
So now we have this breath this beautiful breath and now we're going to join it with the chakras,
The energy centers in the body which is now moving out into experiencing the world.
How do we bring this out into our experience?
So again,
I'll read a few verses and then we'll back up and look at them individually.
Follow the path of the life force as she flashes upward like lightning through your body.
Attend simultaneously to the perineum,
That bright place between the legs to the crown of the skull and to that shining star place above the head.
Notice this living current becoming ever more subtle as she rises radiant as the morning sun until she streams outward from the top of the head into all embracing gratitude.
Thus become intimate with the life of all beings.
Trace the river of life that flows through you the luxuriously rising energies gradually touching each of the centers along the spine savor every shimmer of color along the way enter each area tenderly loving as you go finally gently dissolving in the crown of the head then above in the space above the head the great dawn.
Let your attention glide through the centers of awareness along the spine with adoring intent.
There is a song to each area of the body resonating in sweet vortices long rhythmic vowels and hums ah and ee,
Om,
Hum resounding on and on.
Find the harmonies emanating from the circulation of life energies listen to these sounds then more subtly as an underlying hum eventually as most subtle feeling then diving more deeply dissolve into freedom.
Rest the attention easily in the forehead in the eye that is made of light cherish the delicate energies glowing there allow attention to inquire upwards into the radiant space above the head.
The small self enters delicious omnipresence.
This it remembers and knows as its truth.
Gradually the luminosity of that truth fills the body to overflowing as it rises through the crown of the head into a shower of light.
So in the fifth verse the practice is called sukshma and it's all about experiencing the subtleness of life the subtle sensations even as you're breathing right now almost like you can feel the breath under your skin.
You can feel it in all kinds of places that aren't obvious or maybe just even I went for a walk on Friday night coming home from my friend's place and the night was so quiet like it was just so still and so quiet and warm and it was almost overwhelming this subtle experience.
You know if we just experience it and allow it you know the subtleties of life subtle experiences are so powerful Okay I'm going to re-read just the fifth one and again it's not your mind that's going to experience the subtlety it's something else.
It's almost like if someone was to come up and just touch your skin very lightly it's not a harsh experience it's the subtlety that kind of goes through your whole system.
Follow the path of the life force as she flashes upward like lightning through your body.
Attend simultaneously to the perineum that bright place between the legs to the crown of the skull and to that shining star place above the head Notice this living current becoming ever more subtle as she rises radiant as the morning sun until she streams outward from the top of the head into all embracing gratitude.
Thus become intimate with the life of all things.
The next part,
The sixth one the focus is called Krama and Krama is again there's many many many translations of this.
One is this progression step by step of doing something and you can almost feel that right that piece of being able to I'm going to do this and then I'm going to do this and if you imagine that in the body all the chakras all the energy centers gently working together and even on our life path to think okay I may only know the next step but then I will know the next step and then I will know the next step.
There's a joy in that.
In that it's not just flow right?
There's also a play of tension and release in life.
We go ah I feel you know everything's fine and then life happens and we maybe come up to a change or another step on the staircase and there's tension and then we go through whatever it takes there and then we release into the step again.
So it's not just a static aha here are the steps I'm going to go through them.
Every step is an expansion contraction of life.
It's funny sometimes how we even look for that.
We actually look for a simple path that has no tension and release but really that's where all the juice is.
That's where all the life force is.
Okay sixth verse trace the loo I'm so sorry this is serious.
I just want to say trace the liver of life and not the today's story time but I have to tell you a story because I'm going to giggle about it for a minute before I can keep writing,
Reading.
I went to a few years ago I went to a fundraiser for the Canadian Liver Foundation and in Canada we have this band called the Bare Naked Ladies and they're hilarious right?
They're just these young guys in Toronto they had my dad was a high school teacher and they actually went to his high school when he was they were just you know guys right?
So we all love the Bare Naked Ladies and they were playing at this fundraiser so every time there was any word they could change into liver they did it.
There's this one song called Lovers in a Dangerous Time.
Of course they're up there singing Livers in a Dangerous Time.
Sorry.
Oh and there's a whole bunch more that they just every time they had a chance they would change it to liver and so of course now oh I'm going to be giggling with this all day.
And I'm going to have that song in my head.
Okay ready?
I will try to say River and not Liver.
Hi there.
So here's where I'm going to try to overlay the chat because this is where I just started losing it.
Everyone was so funny.
Okay.
I know.
I liver it.

One good liver deserves another.
Yeah,
He does never know,
Right?
What's going to come out of it?
I have laughing goosebumps.
Oh my God.
I'll never get to bed.
I'll be laughing all night.
This is great.
My stomach hurts.
My back's all like I'm like.
I have laughing goosebumps.
How's your liver?
Thanks for giving us a liverly day.
Down liver road.
Oh wow.
How did that get so liverly today?
Oh,
You guys are so awesome.
Okay.
You guys are great.
It's funny.
I actually I want to read you a different piece now.
And.
Okay.
Ready?
I actually want to jump ahead a little.
And this is one of my favorite passages.
This is like number 44.
But it feels kind of right for this moment.
Rivers of power flowing everywhere.
Fields of magnetism relating everything.
This is your origin.
This is your lineage.
The current of creation is right here.
Coursing through subtle channels.
Animating this very form.
Follow the gentle touch of life.
Soft as the footprint of an ant.
As tiny sensations open to vastness.
Power sings as it flows.
Electrifies the organs of sensing.
Becomes liquid light.
Nourishes your entire being.
Celebrate the boundary where the streams join the sea.
Where the body meets infinity.
I love that one.
Who knew that we were going to laugh today?
Laughs.
Alright.
We're going to go on.
Thank you.
That was so awesome.
Laughs.
You know what's really funny?
Is the um,
The next one is Muktva.
Which is all about loosening up and feeling freedom.
Isn't that interesting?
So imagine we feel all this joyful energy.
And just close your eyes and I'm going to read you the ninth.
The ninth verse.
And again without even suppressing any of the joy.
Just letting it be there.
Rest the attention easily in the forehead.
In the eye that is made of light.
Cherish the delicate energies glowing there.
Allow attention to inquire upwards into the radiant space above the head.
The small self enters delicious omnipresence.
This it remembers and knows as its truth.
Gradually the luminosity of that truth fills the body to overflowing.
As it rises through the crown of the head into a shower of light.
There's something so beautiful about that,
Right?
When we bring everything from the world like the joy that everything,
Not just joy but everything,
We bring it all up into these higher subtle realms and we just let them flow.
We just let them open completely.
But we bring that passion of life up into these beautiful more subtle centers.
Thank you for this deliverance Katrina and everyone.
Liver free or die.
Thank you for the liver laugh.
That's awesome.
This was great.
Have a great week everyone and remember to liver your best life.
I'm going to go for a walk later and I'm going to have this great smile on my face.
And thank you all.
I am deeply in liver with life.
A deep,
Deep liver.
We have to change the name of our circle to tantra,
Liver and connection.
Seriously,
I'll never look at liver the same.
I'm laughing out loud here too.
It starts again.
For anyone who's new we have a circle called tantra love and connection with Katrina Boss.
Tantra liver and connection.
All your talks are great but this one has that extra liver to vive.
That's awesome.
Liver for all.
Extra liver to vive.
So awesome.
We all stand our way over here.
Many livers to cross.
Saturday night liver Chris Farley character.
