Hi friends,

This is Kalyani.

Thank you for joining me for this episode on diving deep into back pain.

In today's practice,

We will focus on resolving back pain.

Whenever we find that we are suffering from a pain or illness,

We can accept it on the physical level,

Connecting it to an accident or something we were exposed to.

We can take the recommended medicine and hope that it goes away.

Or we can dive below the surface,

Especially if it seems to be chronic pain or chronic illness,

So that we can explore the message that our body is sending to us.

This is not a way to judge ourselves,

Or blame ourselves for our suffering,

But instead it is a way to bring awareness to the subtle energy at play within our mind and body.

Healing takes place much faster when we combine this knowledge with our conventional treatments.

So I'm not telling you to skip going to your doctor and following standard protocol,

But instead add another tool to your toolbox.

Add another layer of treatment that will accelerate your healing.

Empower yourself to find the answer to your suffering.

Our thoughts are powerful.

Our thoughts become our words.

Our words become our action.

If we continue to talk about our pain and suffering,

Then pain and suffering will continue.

But if we are open to the possibility that a thought or belief is the root cause of our pain,

We can change our thoughts,

Which in turn will change our actions and impact our physical body in a positive way.

So for instance,

Dr.

Sarno wrote a book called Healing Back Pain,

The Mind-Body Connection.

In it,

He states that back pain is usually entirely psychological.

Dr.

Sarno believes that the back muscles go into spasm and cause pain because of mental tension,

And that if you can get to the root cause of the tension,

The pain will disappear.

Once we look at the emotions behind the pain,

We can work on being open,

Welcoming flexibility into our mind and heart,

Knowing that it is safe to listen to others and try a different path.

Life is change.

We need to be able to flow with the changes,

Instead of remaining stuck in our beliefs and being unyielding.

So in today's practice,

We will listen to the wisdom of the book,

Messages from the body,

Their psychological meaning,

As well as Louise Hay's book,

You Can Heal Your Body.

Setting our intention to be,

I trust the process of life.

All I need is always taken care of.

I am safe.

Remember that in Yoga Nidra,

We function on a level of listening and awareness.

Do not try too hard.

Simply follow my voice,

And when you notice that you have drifted off into thinking,

Just say,

Thinking without any judgment,

And return your awareness back to your breath.

So find a comfortable position,

And begin to simply notice your breath,

Inviting the breath to fall in and fall out with as little effort possible,

Consciously slowing down.

Slowing down the breath,

And slowing down the steady stream of thoughts rising to the surface.

We will not attempt to stop the current of thoughts.

Instead,

We will begin to expand the space between the thoughts,

Allowing for stillness in the mind and body.

First we will take a journey throughout the entire body,

Becoming aware of all sensations within.

Without judging what we find as good or bad,

Simply noticing,

Without attaching any emotions to what we discover.

Begin with observing any sensations you experience in the right hand.

You may feel your right hand as vibration.

You may see with your inner eye radiant light.

However you experience your right hand is okay.

You cannot do this wrong.

Simply bring total awareness to your right hand.

Thumb of the hand,

Back of the hand growing heavy,

Right thumb,

Pointer finger,

Middle finger,

Ring finger,

And pinky,

Whole hand heavy,

Whole hand relaxed.

Thumb of the wrist,

Now shine the spotlight of your awareness on your left hand,

Pointer finger,

Middle finger,

Ring finger,

And pinky,

Whole left hand heavy,

Whole hand relaxed,

Whole front of the body,

Whole back of the body,

Total awareness of the entire body as radiant vibration,

Alive with sensation,

Inhaling I watch,

Exhaling I witness,

Inhaling I watch,

Exhaling I witness,

As we continue to ride the wave of our breath,

Move awareness to the low back area,

Exploring this area without judgment,

Become curious like an explorer,

Is this an area that holds tension and pain for you?

What sensations can you observe here?

Take your time and bring awareness to the creative thoughts that attempt to draw you away from exploring sensations.

The low back is the foundational floor on which everything is built in the way of being in the world.

It's our foundation of basic emotional support.

Financial sustenance,

And even our sense of security is located here.

Emotionally speaking,

The low back represents a fear of money,

A lack of financial support.

But deeper than that,

There is an imbalance of power,

An unequal exchange of energy,

A feeling that things are out of harmony.

We may feel overburdened and under supported.

This can stem from the past,

Where we experienced an unsupportive home.

There may be a considerable amount of grief over the lack of basic support both currently and in childhood.

This can lead us to being over responsible,

Self-condemning,

Depressed,

And even exhibit despairing behavior.

Look into your life,

Either current day or in the past,

When you may have experienced low back pain and try to remember what was going on at that moment in your life.

Keep your breath slow and steady as we explore the emotions that are contributing to our back pain.

Inhaling I lengthen.

Exhaling I let go.

Inhaling I lengthen.

Exhaling I let go.

Now guide your awareness back to the low back area.

Imagine all of those emotions we have been storing in the low back,

And together we will use our breath as a cleansing tool.

Inhaling gather any emotions that no longer serve us,

And exhaling breathe them out of the body.

Inhaling through the nose gather,

Open them out and sigh it all out.

Inhaling gather,

Let it all go.

One more time,

Inhaling gather,

Sigh it out,

Release.

No longer holding on to the belief that you are not supported.

Releasing all heavy and painful emotions from your mind and body.

Begin to nurture yourself.

Feel the deep connection we have to all those meditating with us in this moment.

Feeling connected and loved.

Affirming I trust the process of life.

All I need is always taken care of.

I am safe.

I trust the process of life.

All I need is always taken care of.

I am safe.

Back pain can also be reduced by releasing the burden we are carrying.

This can be done by writing in a journal.

Burden the page with all of your burdens.

When the balance in the autonomic nervous system is shifted to the restorative parasympathetic side,

The deep muscles that may be the source of pain begin to let go.

So together let's inhale I am aware and exhale I anchor.

Inhaling I am aware and exhaling I anchor.

Allowing our mind and body to be anchored into this present moment where all is well.

Allowing our mind and body to be anchored into this present moment where all is well.

Move the awareness now to the middle back.

Emotionally speaking the middle back represents guilt.

Getting stuck in all that stuff back there.

We may experience a feeling of get off my back.

Middle back pain can involve a fear of moving forward and feeling trapped in the past.

The root problem is the need for reassurance of one type or another to heal.

Affirm I release the past.

I am free to move forward with love in my heart.

I release the past.

I am free to move forward with love in my heart.

It's not that we want to forget the past.

But everything that happens to us happens for us to learn and grow.

So take the lesson from the past but leave all of the negative emotions behind.

Moving into the present moment.

As we allow our shoulders and hips to relax even more.

Inhancing respiration.

Inviting the breath to expand within the body.

Feel the contrast between the heavy body and the light breath.

Experiencing both heaviness and lightness simultaneously.

And begin to encourage your heart to open.

Allowing yourself to trust and to be vulnerable.

For it is within our vulnerability that we experience our power.

Inhaling I relax.

Exhaling I release.

Inhaling I relax.

Exhaling I release.

Allowing our hearts to open with each expanding breath.

Increasing the flexibility in our upper backs.

According to Louise Hay,

The upper back represents a lack of emotional support.

Feeling unloved and holding back love.

But remember all love begins within.

We cannot love another until we truly love ourselves.

Affirming I love and approve of myself.

Life supports and loves me.

Even if we have to fake it in the beginning.

Affirm I love and approve of myself.

Life supports and loves me.

Repeating it until you believe it.

I love and approve of myself.

Life supports and loves me.

Coming back to the breath.

Inhaling I accept.

Exhaling I allow.

Inhaling I accept.

Exhaling I allow.

Now in your mind's eye,

Imagine a pitcher of water.

Naturally,

When you fill up a glass,

The water fills the bottom first,

Then the middle,

Then the top of the glass.

So imagine your torso is like a glass,

And we are pouring the breath into the body.

So naturally,

The belly fills first,

Then the ribs,

Then the chest.

Exhaling,

Pour the breath into the body.

Then the ribs,

Then the chest.

Exhaling,

Pour the breath out from the chest,

Then the ribs,

Then the belly.

Mentally repeat,

Inhaling belly,

Ribs,

Chest,

And exhaling chest,

Ribs,

Belly.

Squeezing out every last drop of air to create even more space for the next inhalation.

This is known as three-part breath,

Or complete breath.

Slow,

Easy breath as we pour the breath in and out of the body with total awareness.

Now think back to the beginning of this practice.

Remember the intention we set together,

And let's repeat it three times silently within.

I trust the process of life.

All I need is always taken care of.

I am safe.

I trust the process of life.

All I need is always taken care of.

I am safe.

I trust the process of life.

All I need is always taken care of.

I am safe.

Finally,

Begin to cultivate the feeling of gratitude.

Gratitude to your body and mind for the ability to practice this evening.

Grateful for the gift of your breath.

Mentally make a list of all that you have to be grateful for.

Even when we are facing challenges in our life,

We can reach towards a thought of gratitude so that we can feel better now.

Inviting the body to melt away from the mind.

The entire body at ease.

As the mind slips effortlessly into deep relaxation and deep rest.

Om Shanti Shanti Shanti.

Meaning peace,

Peace,

Peace.

May we all know peace within.

May we all be surrounded by peace.

May we bring peace to all those we encounter.

Thank you for trusting me to be your guide.

Sleep well,

Friends.

Wow!! Out of all I have been learning on my self discovery over the last many months, this session has been probably the most powerful. Everything that you have said and done in this has rang so true for me. I’m beginning to wonder now about the connection between my lower back painand other emotional issues in my life. I am going to listen to this again, take down some of the affirmations and build them into my life. Thank you for a phenomenal experience. You have a gift.
