Today we're talking about meeting children where they are and exactly what that means.
So as a yoga teacher,
I go into schools and I teach children from the ages of two to young adults of 18.
The breadth of ability,
Language,
Strength,
Focus,
Concentration is so vast.
So it is impossible to have a cookie cutter formula of how to teach these children.
And for any professional in the business,
They know that meeting a child where they are at is what is so important.
So what does this mean?
So as a parent or a carer or anything,
It means just meeting the child as an individual.
Where they are at is their own ability and their own level.
And from that point is where you push them to achieve or you challenge,
Not push them to achieve,
That's the wrong word,
But challenge them.
You set them little challenges from where they are at.
If they are here and you're setting challenges for somebody up here,
You're setting them up to fail.
Equally,
If they're here and you're setting them challenges for someone down there,
They're not being challenged.
So it's really understanding the levels of the ability for the child.
And if you've got a class of many different abilities,
On the broad spectrum,
You're channeling it in the middle.
But within that,
You have the scope to approach each of the children.
I have a maximum of 16 in any of my classes,
Or I try to.
Some days,
Of course,
I do have to do much,
Much bigger classes,
But that's always the understanding that I can't really do any one-to-ones with that.
It's a big group class.
If it's 16 or less,
I can approach,
Assist,
And give little different challenges for each of the students in my class.
Equally,
When you meet a child or a young person,
Don't expect them to just be open arms with you.
It's human nature that they're gonna be cautious of you,
That they might not wanna do whatever it is that you wanna share with them,
But that's okay.
Meet them where they're at.
Give them the time to come to you.
Same with meeting any young child.
So many people go,
Oh,
And they go to meet,
And these young children are,
No,
And that's fine.
I always sit back a little bit.
I'm always very open,
Open body language,
Open face,
Smile,
Make eye contact,
Connect with them,
And eventually,
They will come to you.
So that is meeting a child where they're at.
No expectations,
But understanding their ability,
And from their level of ability,
You teach from there,
Not from your knowledge,
From where they are at,
Then you use your wisdom to teach.
Next week,
We're gonna be going into designing a yoga class.
