This meditation will help you strip away emotional exaggeration and see reality clearly.
By practicing the stoic,
Objective representation,
You will learn to describe situations as they are without unnecessary drama or bias,
So you can respond with wisdom and calm.
So to begin,
Find a comfortable position,
Sit upright,
Shoulders relaxed,
Hands resting gently,
And close your eyes.
Take a deep breath in,
Hold for a moment,
And slowly exhale.
Again,
Inhale deeply,
And release tension as you breathe out.
Let your mind settle into stillness.
Today,
We will practice seeing things as they truly are,
Without distortion or unnecessary judgment.
As Marcus Aurelius wrote,
You have power over your mind,
Not outside events.
Realize this and you will find strength.
Bring to mind a moment from yesterday,
Or from recent past,
When you felt frustration,
Anger,
Or disappointment.
Perhaps you were criticized,
Someone spoke harshly,
Or a plan didn't go as expected.
Hold that moment gently in your mind,
As if you are watching it unfold from a small distance.
Now,
Instead of replaying the emotions,
Focus only on the raw facts,
What actually happened.
Imagine you are a camera recording the scene.
What were the exact words spoken?
What were the physical actions that took place?
What events occurred without any interpretation?
Describe it plainly in your mind,
Removing all emotional labels.
For example,
Instead of,
I was unfairly criticized by my boss,
Say to yourself,
My manager pointed out three areas in my report that needed improvement and asked me to correct them by tomorrow.
Instead of,
That driver was rude and cut me off on purpose,
Say,
A car moved into my lane in front of me,
Causing me to brake.
Notice how removing emotional language instantly reduces the intensity of your reaction.
Take a deep breath in,
And let go of unnecessary interpretations as you exhale.
Now acknowledge your initial emotional reaction to this event.
Ask yourself,
What did I feel?
What emotion was it?
And what judgment did I attach to the event,
Such as,
They don't respect me,
Or this is unfair,
Or I always get treated this way?
Recognize that these emotions come from your interpretation,
Not the event itself.
As Epictetus famously reminds us,
It isn't the things themselves that disturb us,
But the judgments we attach to them.
Say to yourself,
I acknowledge that I felt that emotion,
But this is my reaction,
Not an inherent property of the event.
I'll say that sentence again,
Because there's a lot of wisdom in this.
I acknowledge that I felt x emotion,
But this is my reaction,
Not an inherent property of the event.
Take a deep breath in,
And as you exhale,
Release any personal attachment to the event.
It is simply an event,
Nothing more,
And nothing less.
Now reframe the situation in a way that serves you.
Ask yourself,
Is this situation as bad as I originally thought?
Is there another,
More neutral way to view this?
What constructive action can I take now?
For example,
Instead of,
I was insulted,
Reframe it as,
I received feedback that I can choose to act on or ignore.
Instead of,
This is a disaster,
Reframe it as,
This is an unexpected challenge that I can manage.
Let this new objective clarity settle in your mind.
Breathe deeply,
Feeling lighter and more in control.
Now,
And finally,
Decide on your next rational step.
If it was feedback,
Will you act on it constructively?
If it was a misunderstanding,
Will you clarify calmly?
If it was an uncontrollable event,
Will you let it go?
Feel your mind become steady,
Like calm water reflecting reality as it is,
Clear and undisturbed.
As you gently bring your awareness back,
Feel this sense of clarity stay with you.
You will see things as they are today,
Not as your emotions distort them.
You will move through the day with a calm,
Measured mind,
Responding with reason rather than reaction.
Take a final deep breath in and exhale completely.
When you're ready,
Open your eyes.
Go forward today with clear vision and steady purpose.
And keep coming back to this.
And keep coming back to this meditation,
As often as you need to,
To make this a mental habit,
An automatic process in your mind.
Go forward today with clear vision and steady purpose.
This is the end of the meditation.
