Putting Your Well-Being First
This talk reminds you that well-being matters and supports you with some ideas on cultivating a more balanced life. What if instead of improving ourselves we learned to accept ourselves? Let's talk about prioritizing health and well-being over productivity and performance.
Transcript
Welcome.
This talk is going to move you from perfectionism to self-empowerment,
Because we're going to redefine success through self-care and personal growth.
We often talk about how much we want health and well-being,
And there's a huge focus on wellness,
Especially holistic wellness,
And yet there's still this tendency to actually,
In our daily practice,
Prioritize productivity and performance,
Especially for overachievers and people who just want to get things right,
Who want to be the best version of themselves and want to give their best work and let it be approved and accepted and rewarded by those that we're sharing that with or that we're doing it for.
And yet that can have a huge effect on whether we feel strong in our emotions,
Our mental and spiritual stability even,
And how resilient we might be because if something doesn't perform well or we're not as productive as we want to be,
Then it feels self-defeating that we've done something wrong or that we didn't measure up.
See,
Society has these strong measures of success based on even glorifying a busy lifestyle.
You know,
We hear over and over again,
I'm so busy,
I'm so busy,
I don't have time for that.
And it also makes it hard when we do have some space in our day and we don't know what to do with ourselves,
That we should be doing something else,
Something more productive and get down on ourselves if we hadn't been productive.
While in reality,
That rest and that downtime is essential to our wellness,
To our health and to our well-being and help support keeping our spirit intact.
So,
The way that we're measuring success needs to change for a sustainable future,
For the way that we can even sustain ourselves because so many of us have become overworked,
Overcommitted and really don't have the time to pursue our dreams,
To do what we actually love doing and spend time with the people that we love the most.
So,
How can we shift our way of thinking and being in the world from always prioritizing productivity and performance and then in a close second having that health and well-being?
What if we just flipped the switch and turned on that health and well-being and in that close second still be productive,
But maybe passionately productive?
So,
Doing the things that you love to do and so one way we can start doing that is prioritizing you first.
You know,
You already wake up and get ready for your day,
So what if you were to enhance that by including some self-care practices and thereby making self-care a secret act,
A ritual that supports you and where you can start making life-supportive decisions,
Decisions that will actually support your future and support your health and well-being.
You know,
It's interesting because when you start to make that shift you become even more productive because you start prioritizing what's most meaningful and important for you and you start living in your values.
You start doing the things you love and you feel better,
You feel passionate and encouraged and all the things that you seek out of all this productivity and grinding and hustling that you actually start to cultivate that from within,
From your true self,
Your true being and that helps you to feel more on purpose that you're living in alignment with your true self and with your dharma.
In other words,
Your purpose and soul's calling.
What are you feeling drawn to?
Where can you follow your bliss?
These are questions you can sit with throughout the day,
So when you're sitting in traffic,
Bring that to mind.
Let the answers emerge from within,
From your own innate knowing,
Your inner resource will help you feel more resourced so that you do feel like you have time and that you do have energy,
You know,
Because it's time to get out of this self-perpetuating cycle of perfectionism and procrastination which leads more to self-sabotage than self-empowerment,
You know,
And sometimes we feel like we're gaining momentum,
That we are being passionately productive and then we're hit with some resistance and suddenly feels like we're doing everything right and yet we hit a brick wall or an obstacle and that's just there to help us slow down and come back into alignment or to give a little reset or some attention to what direction we actually need to go to support us.
It's the law of physics that when we start gaining momentum we're going to hit some resistance and I love this quote too from Robert Frault who said this about an optimist,
That an optimist is someone who figures that taking a step backward after taking a step forward is not a disaster,
It's a cha-cha,
So you can think of it as a little dance or as some fluid movement and to assess whether you want to keep going in this direction or if you need to shift things a little bit so things do run more easily,
More smoothly and you have that ease and empowerment rather than feeling stressed and powerless over your life,
In your situation,
The decisions that you get to make.
So no matter what you're trying to achieve,
It's even more essential to focus on who you want to become right and so this is where you start to become more successful through personal growth and being on your own evolutionary path,
Your spiritual journey where you get to free your spirit to direct the life that you're meant to live,
Where you get to tap into your true passion and passion you know when you break up the word,
It's actually pass I on and that I is your soul's expression of what you're here to pass on in this lifetime and so that's what I encourage you to focus on and to start to access and tap into that inner being,
The inner knowing,
The inner resources that you have to sustain yourself and your future.
This creates more emotional and mental stability and also cultivates stronger resilience so you don't creep into that unhealthy self-defeating patterns that are often perpetuated by perfectionism and procrastination.
So by shifting your mindset in this way into health and well-being over productivity and performance,
Then you get to choose what's most life supportive for you.
In other words,
What would help you feel more deeply satisfied and fulfilled?
You know we may think if we hustle more,
Grind it out,
Work harder,
That's going to secure our future,
That's what we have to do,
Need to do and then we're moving or motivated by obligation instead of that passion which can actually help us thrive.
So while it's true that yeah we do need dedication and commitment to our goals,
However it doesn't mean we have to suffer in the process.
It doesn't mean our health and our well-being and our families and our relationships have to be sacrificed.
So what if we did have it all backwards that instead of hustling we can shift into harmony and create business and career success that actually improves our relationships and sets us up to be role models for our families.
It kind of feels like a no-brainer when we put it that way doesn't it?
And yet we've been so conditioned to believe the opposite to be true,
To focus more on the task rather than our humanity,
Us being human and being a person,
A real person,
Not a machine.
I know that's why I had such a hard time working in systems where it was more about the policies and the programming rather than the person.
You know we have such a roll-to-roll way of relating and that's what helped me shift into more soul-to-soul connection and the deep inner work that I had to do to move out of what I thought I was supposed to do as a career and what I had my degree in into better ways that I can serve and be with others.
And maybe you're feeling that too.
Maybe you're feeling a shift from your career or corporate life into your calling.
What would your life look like then?
And it might be useful to consider what boundaries need to be put into place to prevent overworking and burnout.
Knowing what your personal limits are so it can help define the structure that you need to really help you thrive,
To create a strong foundation.
And the foundation that I'm referring to here is your health and well-being.
So here are some things that you might want to consider as new measures of success.
Is your level of mental health and self-care?
How your physical body is doing?
How you're managing stress?
And how you factor in your social and emotional well-being?
And your environment has a lot to do with this too.
So what kind of culture are you creating in your business,
In your life,
For your health,
For your family?
Or a more sustainable future?
See first we need to consider ourselves being the change that we want to see,
Which then extends to everyone around us and even the world at large.
And since you'll be living at a higher vibration by starting to incorporate some of these self-care practices and other ways of thinking,
Then you'll be at a stronger and higher vibration and others will feel this.
So things will naturally shift around you.
So as we said,
How can you put yourself first?
Well,
Let's start with your morning routine.
As you have certain ways already of how you get ready for your day,
What can you do to enhance that?
What's one key self-care practices that's most meaningful for you?
And how can you start bringing that in?
So it's one step at a time,
Just doing a little bit,
A tiny shift.
You know,
We've learned a lot through,
You know,
Atomic habits and tiny habits and so on,
That it's just like that micro movement,
That shift that can really shift your whole trajectory.
So by doing that,
Then you're already entering into the day with heart and mind prepared and focused on your health and well-being first,
Making that a priority.
And this in itself can be very productive.
And you'll notice it feels really,
Really good.
And being in that kind of state of mind and way of being as you enter into the world can help support you in feeling more content and happier and be able to sustain that in a much stronger way.
Because you've made that commitment and the dedication to devoting your life to what you are most about.
So let's end that here.
And you can start implementing this if you want to create a better and more sustainable future for yourself and for your family,
Which can extend to the world at large.
Because then we start to create harmony within ourselves and then outside of ourselves as well.
Until next time.
