Why Your Affirmations Aren't Working

Hello and welcome to a new episode of the Healing Maven podcast.

I am your host,

Jamie Sutherland,

Spiritual healer and guide and teacher.

I'm so excited to bring new,

Fresh episodes to your ears.

On today's episode,

I really want to get into why your affirmations are actually making you feel worse.

You know,

We have post-it notes written on our mirror,

We have post-it notes taped up around our house,

We have reminders in our phones.

We have these affirmations of who we want to be and what we want to do,

What we want to create,

What we want to experience,

What we want to call into our lives.

On our walls,

On our mirrors,

Vision boards that we've created,

Inspirational words,

Images,

Pictures.

But when we tune into them,

You're not only not having them manifest or come true,

But you're noticing that sometimes when you read them,

You actually even feel worse.

And if you find yourself diverting your attention,

So if you walk into a room,

You know there's a certain affirmation written on that mirror,

Written on that wall,

But you divert like subcon- intentionally,

Unintentionally avert your eyes so that they don't land on it so that you don't have to read them because you can- like you already feel kind of bad in your body anticipating seeing that affirmation.

If an affirmation is making you- like more reminding you that you don't have that or that you're not experiencing that yet,

The affirmation is not doing the work that it is meant to do.

Not in terms of calling that thing into your reality.

The current work that that affirmation is doing for you is actually bringing your attention to a point of healing where a belief is not aligned with that thing that you're calling in.

So it's actually not necessarily that it's not quote-unquote for you,

But there is a step you need to do in order to attune to that affirmation so that when you read it,

When you think about it,

When you visualize it,

When you can tune into it and your whole body feels good,

Feels maybe calm,

Peaceful,

Relaxed,

Feels joyful,

Feels excited,

Feels happy about the prospect,

That's when you know that the beliefs and the programming that you're running within your subconscious are aligned with your conscious belief that this is possible for you.

So there's a few reasons I want to get into why this happens where you feel bad when you're- when you're looking at your affirmation and essentially cover why your affirmations,

Instead of making you feel better,

Are helping you when you read them and what you need to do to shift the energy around them.

Because if you're reading them,

If you're reading affirmations or mantras and feeling neutral,

That's one thing.

Like that- so their healing has been done on some level where you don't have anything actively working against,

Like you don't have a belief actively working against that thing you're calling in,

But you also haven't created the beliefs needed to believe that it's possible for that thing to come into you.

So if you don't feel anything at all,

That still means that you aren't actually manifesting the reality that you're calling in,

But you also aren't necessarily actively- actively manifesting against it.

Because we are always manifesting,

It's just that we are often manifesting unintentionally.

Every moment of the day,

You are either in alignment with the life you desire,

Or you're attracting the opposite of that life that you desire.

So it doesn't mean that if you're not actively in alignment that you're actively out of and detracting it.

So before you panic,

Because I remember reading a lot of Abraham Hicks when I first started,

And Abraham's teachings are focused quite heavily on the law of attraction.

And I remember reading it,

And I remember panicking at first because I didn't really understand fully,

But they made me feel like if I wasn't thinking positively,

If I wasn't feeling good,

If I wasn't like- if I wasn't in that state of blissful joy all the time,

Then that meant that I was detracting the things that I wanted to call in.

But Abraham isn't human,

Right?

The whole channeling of their teachings as he's coming through Esther Hicks,

Or as,

Sorry,

They are coming through Esther Hicks,

The Abraham Collective,

They don't have the human experience.

So although they can speak to the things that they speak to,

Which are extremely helpful and inspirational,

And I absolutely love listening to Abraham Hicks,

I find them very motivational,

But when I didn't have the understanding that to be human is to feel,

And to be human is to feel everything.

To be human is to feel the good,

The bad,

The sad,

The happy,

The grief,

The anger,

But that we're just not using our emotions in the way that we're meant to.

And they do go into that as well,

Talking about how using your emotions to guide you in knowing if you are or are not in alignment,

But they don't go as heavily into that,

I find,

In a way that was applicable.

Like,

In a way that I could understand and then apply,

Other than come to a better feeling thought.

And if you're getting something,

Like if you are also a big reader,

Or an avid listener of them,

And you get something else,

That's beautiful.

That's absolutely what you were meant to get from them.

But I think for me,

What I was meant to get from them is I was meant to feel that gap,

Personally.

I was meant to feel the gap where they are giving you exercises to help you get to a better feeling place.

However,

I personally believe there is a healing,

A human healing aspect that needs to happen in that,

So that you're not being triggered all the time.

Like,

In my life,

I don't want to have to consistently feel extremely low and then use the exercises to get myself to feel better.

I would like to experience the lows and take in the lesson,

And take in the healing,

And understand the root of it,

So that I can get to that root of it,

Pull it out,

Like a weed that's unwanted,

Pull it out,

So that I am no longer reaching that same low place about that specific thing.

So,

Before you panic and spiral to go down a hole where I've gone too far and I'll never attract what I want because I feel so bad all the time,

And life just does not feel good,

And my affirmations don't feel good,

And my mantras aren't helping,

There's no way that I can get back,

Know that your magnetic energy is an accumulation of your most dominant thoughts and feelings.

So,

If you think or feel quote unquote negatively about your manifestation for like 10% of your day,

But the other 90% you're able to be in this loving abundant state,

When you think about that,

The universe is receiving that dominant 90%,

So you're still in very good shape in terms of calling in what you want.

So,

It's taking your most dominant feeling throughout the day,

That's what the universe is receiving.

So,

The moments of despair,

The moments of loss,

The moments of grief,

These are all meant to be felt.

You are not meant to live there,

Absolutely,

Like these are not emotions that are meant to be your natural state of being,

But they are indicators,

They are guides for you to expand and open up and just live more fully.

Seeing them in this way,

So instead of seeing them as this detraction or deterrent or taking away from your manifesting power,

They're actually going to make you more powerful.

If you know how to take them in and then alchemize them,

Turn that pain into beauty,

Turn that pain into focus,

Turn that pain into the loving lesson that it's meant to be,

And then release it,

And then let it go,

So that you can return to your natural state,

Which you can create as being happy,

As being peaceful,

As being loving and abundant.

And in fact,

If you take it even further,

If you think about things in general through your day that make you feel good,

Loving,

And abundant,

You'll also naturally attract many different experiences that will bring you more of that.

And this is something that Abraham Hicks absolutely talks,

Speaks to as well,

Because that's part of their teachings,

Right?

Is that you have what you want,

But if you're unable to feel good about what you want,

They teach you to,

You know,

Think about other things that make you feel good,

And then come back to the thing you want with the feeling of already feeling good.

And that's kind of the caveat here,

And a piece that I think is sometimes misunderstood or forgotten in their teachings,

Is that healing piece.

You know,

It's if this thing doesn't make you feel good,

You want this thing.

Like say,

You want a loving relationship,

But when you think about a loving relationship,

You know,

You have an affirmation that's,

I attract loving relationships that make me feel seen,

Cherished,

And known.

But you look at that affirmation,

And you read that affirmation,

And the feeling in your body is contraction,

Or constriction,

Or sadness,

Because you're like,

That means that there's a piece of you that doesn't believe that you are worthy of it,

That doesn't mean it's possible for you.

And so,

With Abraham Hicks teachings,

I found that they would say,

Okay,

So think about something else where you do feel loved,

Cherished,

And nourished,

And then come back to that relationship that you desire,

And bring those feelings with you.

Sometimes that's easier said than done,

I think.

And there was times where,

You know,

This was really helpful,

And I was able to bring those feelings in,

Because I wasn't healing the root of that unworthiness,

Or I wasn't healing the root that was making me feel like that type of relationship wasn't possible for me.

I was consistently having to do this exercise in order to feel good about this type of relationship that I wanted.

So,

If you are in the same state,

This is the bridge that I like to try to help you gap,

And a bridge that I want to try to help you gap today,

Because they teach you to shift your thoughts and your focus,

Because where your energy goes,

Energy will flow.

And this is true as part of universal law,

But if you don't deal with the of the fears or beliefs behind why you feel fearful or quote-unquote negative,

When you think about that specific manifestation of attracting your soulmate love,

Attracting and having soulmate clients sign up in your business,

Creating a wealthy,

Successful,

Independent,

Freedom-filled business,

Serving in your highest power,

Buying a new home,

Or your first home,

Having a baby,

Getting a new car,

All these things that you maybe want to have and experience,

Then the universe can't bring those into you,

Even if you're shifting your thoughts to other things that feel good,

Because that specific thing still does not make you feel good.

So,

Although you may be able to temporarily bring good feelings into that thing that you want,

If you can't hold that energy,

That means that your dominant feeling behind that manifestation is still in scarcity,

Is still in lack,

Is still in I-can't,

I-won't,

I-don't space.

So,

The vibrational frequency of that specific manifestation or desire isn't in congruence with the things that the universe has to draw into you to continue making you feel good.

Hopefully,

This is making sense.

If it isn't,

I'm happy to provide more clarity on this concept,

Because I do think it's important to understand,

And I think it's part of the reason why people will read and listen to Abraham,

But not apply the principles behind their teachings of also building the feel-good ladder,

Because you need to be able to heal as well.

You need to be able to hold the energy.

Not only build the ladder so that you feel better,

But at each rung of the ladder,

You are healing and releasing the part of you that doesn't feel good about it.

The point behind shifting your focus to things that do feel good is to get out of that feeling bad emotional state so you can come back to the thing you felt bad about and approach it from a more emotionally neutral or better feeling state,

But too often people don't come back.

They take the teachings as almost like a distraction model,

And I know because I was one of them before I got into emotional codes and alchemy specifically.

Understanding,

Learning,

Processing,

Releasing,

Healing,

And started learning and working with this emotional alchemy aligned with these manifestation codes.

That is when things started to shift for me.

You know,

It started with small manifestations,

Free cups of tea,

Free cacao,

Discounts,

And then it grew a little bit,

Right?

And I started to win free sessions with great coaches.

I started to,

I remember one manifestation not having investment funds at the moment for the level of support that I really wanted,

And so I put it out there.

I was like,

Oh,

I could really use some beautiful one-to-one coaching on this specific area.

It'd be so great if I could come in at a price point that I can commit to,

And I just put it out there and made sure my state matched it and made sure everything,

Like my emotions,

Like I was coded so that I was in my vibrational frequency,

Was in congruence with receiving that thing,

And I didn't focus on it,

Right?

That's another piece.

I didn't focus on it.

This isn't about manifestation,

But going on a little tangent,

I didn't focus on it,

And a group program came in and with a beautiful coach that I've worked with before who I,

At the time,

Who I loved,

And I was like,

Okay,

And I signed up and I joined,

And I was the only person in that group program for the first three to four weeks,

So I got four weeks almost of one-to-one coaching with that specific coach,

Even though I had joined a group program,

So it was at a price that was in my investment realm that I was happy with,

That pushed me,

But still felt good,

And I got that free coaching,

And then it just got further,

You know?

When I needed jobs,

I was manifesting better jobs with better pay,

And when I needed,

You know,

My husband and I set out to pay off all of our debt,

And then we had a family member win a local,

Or not local,

But they won,

They won some,

They won a lottery,

And then they gifted us some money and helped us pay off,

Like,

Our truck and basically all of our debt,

And then the next year,

We manifested wanting to move,

And we weren't sure how,

And we didn't have,

Again,

The funds,

No idea how it was going to happen,

But we were debt-free,

Feeling good,

And my husband got a job offer that put us in the city that we wanted to move to,

And they helped us with some moving expenses.

All of these things have been able to happen because I,

As I've been manifesting,

I've been applying healing and emotional codes and alchemy so that I am in congruence with attracting these things,

So that I'm in congruence with the universe feeling my vibrational frequency,

But also feeling the vibrational frequency of all the things that I desire,

And I'm in alignment with them.

I'm in congruence with them making me feel good,

With them adding to my joy,

With them adding to my love,

With them adding to making my life feel good,

Feel better,

Be more enjoyable.

So because of this gap,

Because of this bridge that I created,

I've been able to so far manifest all of these things,

And this is why.

So this comes up for me a lot with friends,

Family,

Clients,

Where they come to me in emotional states,

Coming back to affirmations,

And saying that they're doing,

You know,

The quote-unquote work,

What they believe to be the quote-unquote work,

Because they have the affirmations written out,

They're written on their mirror,

They're written in places where they can see them,

They get,

You know,

They've set up little reminders so that they get these beautiful statements,

But when they read them,

They feel bad in their body,

Like their emotion doesn't feel good,

It's making them feel worse,

But they're committed,

They're committed,

So they're repeating them anyway,

And I have to take them back a few steps to show them that that's actually creating more resistance,

Because they're making their emotional state worse.

The reason why your affirmations aren't working and your reality,

Your life experience aren't changing,

Is because the emotions you feel behind them.

Words are just words.

Words,

Like affirmations,

Are band-aids on a bullet wound if you aren't healing the bullet wound.

The power that words hold is purely in the emotions they evoke.

Think of how differently different words are charged for different people.

You know,

Some people hear words and phrases like girl boss,

Fempreneur,

Solopreneur,

And they immediately go hustle,

Sacrifice,

A woman who's hardened,

A woman who can't be soft,

Who can't be inter-feminine,

She's tough in a negative way.

Others,

Like myself,

Now,

When I think about being a female entrepreneur or a fempreneur and building a feminine empire,

It feels aspirational.

I think of a woman in her power and her softness who's building an empire that honors her feminine flow and urges and doesn't deny them.

She's absolutely not hustling,

Because hustle is not feminine,

In my view,

In my perception of what hustle is.

And even that,

Look at that right there,

It's a beautiful example.

For some people,

They might hear the word hustle and think work hard,

But not apply sacrifice to it.

Growing up,

Hustling,

To me,

Involved sacrifice.

Because it involved sacrifice,

Hustle evoked a negative connotation,

So anytime I would see marketing,

I would see other entrepreneurs talking about it.

Anytime I would see the word hustle used,

My immediate reaction was,

Ugh,

Don't want that,

Don't like that.

Other people might see hustle where it wasn't attached,

And hard work,

And it wasn't attached to sacrifice,

But commitment,

But passion,

But power.

And so it evokes positive things for them,

It inspires them,

It motivates them.

So think of the different words that evoke strong emotional responses either way,

And how others will use them without compunction.

Australian verbiage comes to mind.

I remember when we would host Australian hockey players when I was younger,

My little brothers were all hockey players,

And they'd go back and forth,

They'd have exchange,

International exchanges.

But certain words that they used to call each other would shock my parents,

Because in Canada,

The meaning behind the word was something that was extremely negative,

Hurtful,

Was like insulting in an awful way,

Whereas to the Australian families,

It was just a term that was thrown around all the time,

Like silly guy,

Silly goose,

Whatever we might use.

Of course,

Canadian,

Silly goose.

But anyways,

It's things like that,

Right?

Words don't have power.

The emotional connection specific to every individual behind them does.

And your emotional connections are a response from the programs and belief that you're currently holding in your subconscious.

So your beliefs communicate with you through your emotional responses,

Which is part of why they are codes,

Because how you feel will show up,

Will show you where your current level of belief is,

And so where your current level of alignment is sitting in terms of whatever your manifestations are,

Whatever your affirmations are.

So there's a lot of nuances behind the emotional codes and alchemy that I'll maybe get into in other episodes or lessons.

But for the sake of our purpose in this episode,

Because we're focused on affirmations and specifically affirmations behind manifestations,

Because why else are we creating affirmations,

Really?

Like,

I really believe that these are quite connected.

You know,

I write out my manifestations and my affirmations as part of my morning routine,

And I let my affirmations come through as whatever needs to be felt in my body and myself at that time,

And they're almost always connected to my manifestation.

So,

You know,

If my manifestation,

For example,

Is a new home.

So I am manifesting a new home with big windows and lots of sunlight and space.

This is my manifestation.

An affirmation I might repeat connected to that is,

It is safe for me to live in a big spacious home.

I am worthy of owning my own home.

I am worthy of having a home that I feel has lots of space for me to grow,

Has lots of space for me to host,

Has lots of space for me to cook,

To read,

To relax,

To expand.

So my manifestations and affirmations,

They're almost always connected,

Right?

Like,

I am worthy of my soulmate love.

I am worthy of a healthy,

Happy,

Nourished body.

I am worthy of a thriving,

Successful business.

That's an affirmation,

But it's also a manifestation.

If your affirmation feels bad in your body,

It means you have a belief in your subconscious that's actively working against that statement or affirmation or mantra being true for you.

So when you repeat affirmations or mantras and they fill your body up with love,

Joy,

And excitement when you read them,

Or calm,

Peace,

Safety,

And you think about them and visualize them coming true,

And it just feels so good,

Then you know that the beliefs and programming that you have are in alignment with this becoming your reality,

Which means that the universe is actively working to bring it to you,

To help you manifest it into your reality,

Because your vibrational frequency is in congruence with that thing being true.

When you repeat affirmations or mantras and they fill your body with anything less than unconditional love or joy,

You've got some work to do to get there.

This is why when you're in an emotional state,

Sometimes going to your affirmations or mantras isn't actually helpful,

Because the reason you're in an emotional state is most likely something has been triggered and you don't subconsciously wholeheartedly believe that affirmation to be true or possible for you.

So repeating them brings these beliefs to the surface through emotional communication.

So instead of bringing in love and joy,

It's piling onto the fear and discourage you were already feeling when you turned to your affirmations in hopes they would make you feel better.

That's why sometimes,

Like I said before,

I call affirmations positive band-aids,

Because if the energy and emotional alignment is behind them,

They aren't healing anything but merely covering them up temporarily.

Knowing these concepts and accepting them as truth,

You can now use this information to weed out the subconscious misalignment behind what you're calling in or desiring to create.

So if you're desiring to manifest a new home and you've created affirmations like,

I'm worthy of the home I desire that's spacious with big windows and beautiful views in every season,

Or my new home is coming to me and I'm creating the wealth I need to buy it,

Or if you have manifestation statements like,

I'm manifesting the home of my dreams that has space for my family and visitors.

Instead of using these affirmations to get you into a good state,

I encourage you to get yourself into a good state first.

So sort of bringing in the Abraham Hicks concepts,

Get yourself into a good feeling,

Generally positive state.

So you can do this through meditation,

You can do this through breathing exercises,

You can do this through gratitude is a beautiful way to get yourself into a good feeling state.

But do that first,

Because now you're in a good state,

And then if you go to your affirmation,

You can see how they truly land.

Because before you repeat them,

You're doing a grounding or heart opening practice to align your energy with love and receiving,

And then you open your affirmations,

And they make you feel either more of that or something different.

You can see where something needs to change,

Something needs to be healed,

Something needs to be uprooted and programmed,

Alchemized.

So pay attention to how you feel when you're saying your affirmations.

That is the power.

Pay attention to how you feel when you visualize receiving and having them.

Pay attention to how you feel when you visualize them becoming your truth,

Your current lived experience.

Because that's also their purpose,

Right?

The purpose is that you are repeating them or you're manifesting them for them to become your current lived experience,

Not to keep writing them down in a book day after day,

Week after week,

Month after month.

If you are repeatedly,

And obviously bigger manifestations can take longer to come in depending on where you are versus where you're trying to go,

But the point is for them to become your reality.

So if you feel good,

Happy,

Excited,

And content in the new home you're visualizing that has everything you're desiring,

You're on the right path and your beliefs are aligned with this new home becoming your lived experience.

If you feel anything less than joyful,

Excited,

Or at peace,

Pay attention to that emotion.

What do you feel?

Is it anger,

Sadness,

Frustration,

Fear?

This means subconsciously your beliefs aren't aligned with receiving your new home,

So you can start to explore why.

You can start to get to the root.

Why might I believe I'm not worthy of having a home I desire that brings love and joy to me and my family?

Why does the idea of having a new home that brings love and joy and greater connection for my family and loved ones make me feel sad,

Angry,

Frustrated,

Fearful?

Am I afraid to lose something?

What am I afraid will happen if I manifest this new home?

Is there someone I'm afraid will drop out of my life?

Am I afraid of the work that I'm going to have to do?

Am I afraid of the changes that I'm going to have to make to become the person who can have this new home?

Am I afraid I'm going to have to move?

Get into the why.

Why would I feel sad?

Why would I feel grief?

What must I have to believe for this fear to be true?

What must I have to have programmed,

Running subconsciously,

For me to not think I am worthy of receiving this manifestation?

Is there a friend or family member who maybe has beliefs and they are outspoken about them and you've potentially taken them on as to be true about you?

Have you never known anybody who's owned their own home?

Have you ever known anybody you don't have?

Maybe you don't have an example.

That means that you'll be the first and begin to unravel these beliefs so that you can face them,

Move through them,

And start instilling new beliefs that are in alignment and support of you having that thing that you want.

Start doing this with all of your current affirmations and the manifestation and desire that's behind them.

And even more general affirmations,

Like if you have overall affirmations that you use such as,

I am worthy of the love I desire,

I am an abundant radiant creator who receives everything she desires,

The universe is always working in my favor.

These are some common affirmations.

If they don't feel good,

Follow the same process.

Why don't I believe the universe is always working in my favor?

Would I need to believe that I'm an exception?

There's lots of cases around the world I can see where the universe is absolutely seems to be in the favor of the person,

But never me.

What do I have to believe for that to be my current reality?

What do I have to believe about myself and my life to make me some kind of exception to the rule or law that the universe is always working to give you what you desire?

So what emotion do I feel when I connect with this affirmation or mantra?

If I feel bad,

What must I believe for this not to be true?

What did I experience as a child that's in contradiction to this affirmation or mantra,

And how is or has that experience shown up in other places in my life?

How would I be acting or focusing my energy if I did believe this affirmation or mantra to be true?

What would I be doing differently?

What stops me from doing those things now?

And how can I get to the root of that resistance?

Sometimes much of healing is debunking in this exploratory fashion where you're simply getting curious.

And if you feel yourself starting to shame or guilt yourself for having beliefs that are in contradiction to the affirmation or manifestation you're calling in,

That's also not going to work,

Because the energy of shame is not the energy of healing or self-love or discovery.

The energy of shame is usually from ego,

So it's not in service of your highest purpose or alignment,

But in service of safety,

Quote-unquote,

As in staying the same at all costs,

Which is the ego's version of safety.

Growth is unsafe to the ego,

So if you feel or have shaming thoughts come up at any point in these exercises,

These prompts,

This debunking exploratory time,

Just recognize they're there.

Recognize that you're recognizing them.

You're aware of them coming in.

That means that they can't be you.

They're there,

But kindly just ask them to step aside so that you can continue your journey to feeling better and experiencing your life the way your soul set out to experience before you were born,

Before it incarnated in this lifetime that you're experiencing.

Your soul voice is expansive.

Your ego voice is often contracting.

Contractive.

So that is also how you will know to differentiate between the two.

And again,

I can go deeper into that maybe on another episode.

I hope that this was really helpful for you in understanding why your affirmations might be making you feel worse and also why it's not helpful but actually more harmful when you are in a highly emotional state to go to an affirmation as a way to try to make yourself feel better.

When you are in an emotional state,

You do not want to cover up that emotional state.

If you are at a very early stage in your healing journey where you don't feel like you have the tools needed to move through the emotional state,

Because like I said,

You're not meant to stay in this emotional state,

The emotional state is bringing something to your awareness.

But you have to be able to separate from that trigger,

From that emotional state,

To understand it's bringing something up for you,

Not coming up for you to be reactive and lash out and make rash decisions.

That's not what your emotions are for.

And there's definitely lots of tools that I can help you with if that's something that you want to explore and you're somebody who often gets overwhelmed by your emotions and feel like they take over.

Maybe you suffer from anxiety.

I used to have panic attacks that would lay me out in the middle of classrooms,

In the middle of driving,

I'd have to pull over.

So I have been there.

I have absolutely been there.

And the healing happens when you're out of that emotional state.

And this is something that actually I think I'll go deeper into another time.

But again,

I hope this was really,

Really helpful,

This discussion,

I think it's a really great one to cover,

Because how many things are out there where we aren't going in depth,

And so the quote-unquote quick win that people want to give you is affirmations,

Is surface level manifesting.

I get it.

But if you are listening to this podcast,

I know that you're here to do the healing work.

You're here to not need positive affirmations as band-aids,

But to actually use them to first of all uproot what needs to be uprooted when that desire comes in and you're like,

This is the thing that I want.

Healing is part of the way,

Coming into alignment is part of the way that you are going to call it in,

That you are going to create it,

That you are going to attract the ideas,

Attract the people,

Attract the resources that help you make it your current lived reality,

Your current lived experience.
