During a panic-attack ( sensations of overwhelm, a pressure to "fix", and racing negative thoughts ) there is nothing wrong with doing nothing , deliberately. A friend with ADHD, who happens to be a fellow therapist, uses this statement on herself at first sign of racing thoughts during decision making. What a comfort: we don't have to decide RIGHT NOW. Trauma brain may not get your vibe, at first. But this shift into neutral ( metacognition) provides space to weigh options before barrelling ahead. Try it out! Note: This track is intentionally brief. As you practice, build your ability to endure "nothing" and drop me a comment should you want a longer recording of "nothing".

Transcript

There's nothing wrong with doing nothing if just for this moment in time,

Let's embrace that nothingness together,

Allowing our minds to shift into a neutral state called metacognition,

After which we'll feel more clear about which direction comes next.

Nothing to do right now.

Nothing to do.

There's nothing wrong with doing nothing.

There's nothing at all wrong with doing nothing right now.

The luxury,

Give it to yourself.

What an extravagance.

You can afford it.

There's a whole lot of nothing to be had for free for anyone who values the pause.

Nothing to do.

There's nothing wrong with doing nothing.

Open your eyes,

Re-engage,

Move forward into the next clear something.

Well done,

My friend.

Well done.
