Distinction in meditation means clearly knowing the object, purpose, and method of practice. If it's vague or unclear, meditation can become unfocused. Recognizing when distinction is lacking is key—then, the question becomes: How do we respond? Do we refine our focus, adjust our approach, or deepen our awareness?

Distinction.

Is the meditation object being distinctively known or not,

Or whatever meditation practice is being engaged in?

Is it clear what the objective and purpose and what one should be doing,

Or is it just kind of vague?

It's kind of the breath,

Maybe,

Kind of not.

Sometimes it seems like I'm meditating the way I set out to meditate.

Sometimes it doesn't.

So how clear and distinct is what we're doing in meditation,

What the purpose of the meditation is,

And how much isn't it?

And then,

Of course,

Our relationship to that,

And how when we discover it's not,

There is no distinction,

It's not very distinctive at all what's going on.

And what do we do about it,

And how are we when we wake up and realize that?

And then what do we do about that,

And how do we do that?

Distinction.
