Let's talk about addiction and how to liberate ourselves from addiction.
First,
Let's define what is addiction.
It's simply when we are compelled to do something that we know it's bad for us but we cannot resist it.
It doesn't matter if it's actually thinking,
Thought that we know they're bad for us,
Or eating something we know it's bad for us,
Or drinking,
Or anything else.
So what happens in that movement from thought into action?
That's really the point,
You know,
That moment that thought arises and it starts to stimulate some kind of chemical reaction in our body,
Neurological reaction,
Hormonal reaction in our body,
The need of the body affecting the mind,
And the mind cannot resist anymore until we go either to the fridge,
Or to the substance,
Or to the thought that we know it's bad for us but we cannot resist it anymore.
So how to reverse it?
Most important is to start to create space between the thought and the one who's thinking,
Because we are not the one who thinks,
Yeah?
We are the space in which the thought manifests,
Okay?
So if we don't create this space and if we don't make it wider and wider and wider,
Then we cannot control this addictive behavior,
And when it comes we feel compelled to go and do it.
I'm not saying it's easy,
Yeah?
It's difficult for me as well,
It's difficult,
But it's the only way,
Okay?
So how do we expand that space between thoughts and action?
For that we have to create the space,
Or to realize the space,
Because actually who we are is space,
You know?
In physics it's very known that space is more prevalent on creation than anything else,
Yeah?
Space between atoms,
Space between molecules,
Space between stars.
Space is most prevalent in the whole creation,
And of course in planet Earth,
And of course in our body.
But we are relating to matter and not to space,
Yeah?
So it means that we don't relate to the biggest aspect of our existence,
Which is space,
Yeah?
How do we connect to space?
How do we relate to space?
How do we make space?
Let's take a minute and just close our eyes and pay attention inside.
Obviously when you connect inside,
By default you immediately being guided to know space,
To matter.
So you start to pay attention to your body,
Thoughts,
To emotions,
To sensations,
And this is normal.
But really the space is the awareness that allows you to see all those things,
To become aware of anything in your body,
Around you,
Everywhere.
The awareness is actually what allows you to be conscious of space.
Awareness is space.
But we don't use it this way.
We become aware of matter and then we identify with the matter,
Yeah?
I feel like this,
Yeah?
Emotion,
You can look at it as matter.
Thought,
You can look at it as matter.
Of course physical body is matter,
And the whole creation around us,
We look at it as matter.
Stars,
Galaxies,
Cars,
Walls is all matter.
But the awareness that is aware of this is actually the space.
So to be conscious of space,
We have to teach the mind to slow down.
We have to teach the mind to pay attention to things without identifying with those things.
To pay attention to emotions,
Yeah?
So I'm aware of anger within me,
But I'm not the anger.
I'm aware of fear within me,
But I'm not the fear.
I am the awareness in which the fear manifests.
So how all that relates to addiction?
Because addiction is a very powerful process that makes this space so tight.
Because the minute we go to the object of addiction,
Yeah?
Let's say it's it's a chocolate cake,
Let's say.
So again the chemicals and the neurological impulses that start to move in our body are so strong that it's very difficult to resist this impulse to go,
Eat it,
And then normally we feel bad about it.
So when we feel this impulse to do something,
Ideally we move backwards and connecting back to space.
I know it's not easy because that impulse is very powerful and it pulls the whole system towards completing it.
As if you put a seed and that seed must grow.
So the minute I need this cake,
It'll make me happy.
I'm deserving it and all those thoughts we know very well,
In that moment we are grabbed.
And until we eating this cake,
Although it's very bad for us,
The mind will not let go until the next time we get locked to another addictive thoughts or behavior.
So it's very difficult to do that.
It's possible,
But as we train more and more and more and that space or ability to create space become more and more and more wide,
We don't fall so fast into the trap.
And when that little thought comes,
We can pull back really fast.
And then we don't get into that complete entanglement that doesn't allow us to let go until we have to do what is bad for us.
