In this episode of HowDoYouLive? we feature a Sam Smith’s and Jermain Jackman’s voice coach – Anthony Wade aka Dr Voice. Anthony explores the big question: What’s the biggest killer on the planet? Over forty years ago Anthony Wade yearned to sing. Not a natural singer, he felt compelled to learn the techniques that speakers, pop stars and soul singers used to achieve their powerful performances. This led him to study how the voice works, and its connection with the human spirit behind it. Dr Voice has coached Grammy Award winner Sam Smith, and one of his current pupils is ‘The Voice’ winner Jermain Jackman. He is no ordinary singing/vocal trainer, but an expert in removing the mental blocks preventing people reaching their ultimate life goals.

I gave a talk to these doctors once.

It was amazing.

I asked the doctors in the room,

Tell me,

What's the biggest killer on the planet?

And they all said,

Stress.

I said,

Exactly,

Stress.

Right.

Okay,

What's stress?

Stress is a chemical.

It's a chemical reaction that goes through the blood stream.

It turns into acid and burns holes in the arteries and depletes the organs.

So,

There's another chemical in your body,

Worse than stress.

It's so dangerous,

It can annihilate every other chemical in your body,

Believe it or not.

It's a very powerful chemical.

And this chemical is natural to us.

It's called oxygen.

So when you fill your body full of oxygen,

You are getting rid of stress.

You are becoming still and calm.

And you're saving yourself from aggravation,

Irritation,

Pain,

Anything that's going on in your mind or body,

Because you've actually done that technique,

And it will take you to that place where there's no stress.

Oxygen.

And where does oxygen come from?

The first day you were born.

Weee!

Weee!

With the voice,

The breath and the voice,

Married,

True authentic self.

There it was,

And there it is in you now.

And on the day you die,

You have your last breath.

And that will go,

Whoa.

I realize there's something bigger than what everybody's doing.

There's something bigger than what everybody's trying to do.

And I thought it was God.

So I became a religious nutter.

I became a Mormon,

A Christian,

A Pentecostal,

A Methodist,

You name it.

I claimed every denomination,

Studied it,

Read the books,

The Bhagavad-Gavita,

The Korana Ramayana,

The Aquarian Gospel,

The Bible.

I studied and read because I was so hungry to know what God was.

So,

What is God?

Well,

For me,

I'm not religious.

I don't want to get into religion,

Even though I've been through it and did it so many times.

But now I've become very,

Very aware of who I really am.

And this was the journey that I took.

Looking for generator,

Operator,

Destroyer,

G-O-D,

Was my whole quest.

And it started when I was nine,

Before the Beatles.

And I really wanted to know why we're alive.

Why are we in a body?

Why am I here?

I had to know the answer to this.

And it pushed me,

Forced me to emigrate,

Because I couldn't find it in England around the family,

Which was my family was very much limiting me,

My pursuance of education and growth.

So I had to get out of that area.

That's why I went to Australia.

Now in Australia it was incredible,

Because I was able to see and learn so many different types of things from different cultures,

How people were,

And it was this time that really made me hungry to know the truth even more.

And it wasn't until one day I found myself sitting on a part bench at the age of 20,

Throwing religion out of the window,

Throwing my belief in God,

Jesus,

Buddha,

Anything at all,

To realize there's no such thing.

I'm sorry,

It doesn't exist.

And it wasn't until I realized with my bottle of whiskey that I was finished.

I actually did want to take my own life.

While sitting there,

A man came over to me with a corpse around his hat,

An Australian character,

And he looked straight at me in the eyes and said,

Don't you know,

God is within you.

There I was.

God is within me.

Not in a book,

Not in a religion.

And it was that that took me on the journey to pursue the real truth of my existence.

And this took me to a place where I started to learn about so many people and so many things out there where people were talking about go within.

Go within what?

Coffee shop in Damascus?

Go within what?

Your body.

How do you get inside your body?

Do you put your feet up into your mouth and start walking?

What do you do?

How do you go inside?

Well,

First you have to close your eyes.

Now,

How many people understand what closing your eyes does?

Most people close their eyes if you go to sleep.

We do it just to go to sleep.

But to close your eyes to go on a journey is a different experience,

And you can't do it on your own.

It's like anything else.

Some people might be able to do that,

But most of us can't.

And it was my quest to find a guru,

Someone who could show me,

A person,

An able-bodied person who could tell me,

Show me how to go within.

And this is when I found the person I needed to find.

So there I was,

Really intrigued,

And I waited for 18 months before I could receive this thing called knowledge,

Which I did.

And it was that from that moment I realized that I was not just this mind and not just this body.

I am something else.

And so it is for all of us.

We are not just a mind and just a body.

And how do we know that?

How do we know that is very simple?

I want you to try this.

Try this.

I'm sitting here now looking at you,

And my hand is in my left hand,

Is here.

And I don't know if you can see my left hand,

But my left hand is here.

Now I'm looking at you,

And as I look at you,

I can also see in my peripheral vision my left hand.

I would like you to try that now.

Don't look at your hand,

But just have it a little bit away,

As far as you can,

And just feel that that hand is there,

As you're looking at me now.

As you're doing that,

You see in your peripheral vision your hand.

It's just floating there.

Just indulge your thought with me.

That hand,

It could be someone else's.

Does it feel like yours?

It's like it's just there.

No,

Intellectually it's yours,

But feeling,

Just seeing it in the peripheral vision,

It's like,

Hang on,

It's floating.

We are floating in a body.

We are not this mind.

We are not this body.

We are something inside,

Floating in a body.

Now this became a very powerful realization for me in my time of meditation,

Of which I did ten years,

Roughly eight hours a day,

To find out,

To uncover,

To look at who I really am inside.

Not the outside,

Because we spend too much time going out.

We look out,

We listen out,

We taste out,

We feel out.

And yet these five senses have the incredible capacity to go in.

And no one is bothering.

And it is the same with the voice.

Our voice is the echo of who we really are.

Our voice is a very powerful presence.

As I speak,

You can hear me as I speak,

That I will use my breath on my voice like this.

Ahh.

My breath comes first.

Ahh.

Then sound comes afterwards.

Ahh.

It's rather like a surfboard on top of the water.

The water is like the breath,

The surfboard is the sound.

We all make sound.

Ahh.

And that's what we're doing.

I want you to try that.

Try that with me now.

It's mad,

I know,

But try it.

Go,

Ah.

Just feel your breath,

Take your breath in.

Ahh.

Isn't that incredible?

You're making sound.

Now,

I want you to say a word with me today.

This word is a word that describes you perfectly.

And this is something I've learned on my journey.

I just want to share it with you.

I hope you don't mind.

Just indulge with me.

It's like,

It's interesting,

Because you might have some insights and learn something from this about you.

So you take a breath in and you say this word,

Please.

And this is the word I want you to say.

Take a breath in and the word is,

Me.

It's mad,

Isn't it?

Me.

I want you to listen to that.

You're at home,

You're watching,

Listen to that word.

Here it goes.

Breathe.

Me.

Can you feel that?

I want you to feel it.

Do it until you feel it.

Keep doing it until you feel it.

Breathe.

Me.

Close your eyes and feel that me in you.

Just feel the me in you.

Do it again.

Breathe.

Me.

And you can feel the vibration in your chest vibrating.

You can feel the air vibrating.

It's your chest vibrating.

This is a resonator in your body,

Which makes sound.

Do it again so you can feel it.

Me.

Did you feel that?

Did you feel you in that me?

If you did,

If you're thinking a lot,

You won't.

If you're wondering a lot or you criticize me and think,

I'm an idiot,

I understand,

You're not experiencing that feeling.

So have another go one more time.

Me.

Feel it.

Breathe and go,

Me.

Did you get that?

If you got that,

You're experiencing the me in you.

And that me in you is free.

It's divine.

It's not attached to anything but the sound in you.

The me in you doesn't criticize,

Doesn't judge,

Doesn't live in the past,

Doesn't live in the future.

That sound you made,

Me,

Is here now in this moment as you make sound.

Me.

The self,

However,

Judges.

The self criticizes.

The self is saying all sorts of comments to you.

But the feeling of me has nothing attached to it.

It's honest.

It's your sound.

It's who you are making sound.

Now that,

Believe it or not,

Is the root and connected to the root of your authentic self.

It's the part in you we forget and don't look at every day.

And I ask that question to you.

How many of you want to be your true authentic self?

How many of you really want to feel who you are when you speak or when you talk or when you live?

You see?

When you feel your voice,

When you feel your sound,

You're in the moment.

Right now as I speak to you,

I have no thought.

There is no thought in my body.

I'm listening to my sounds and I'm connecting with you only in the sound of my own voice,

Reaching out to you to ask you to look inside,

To look for that truth in you,

To look for your sound in you.

And when you can and when you feel that sound in you and that breath in you and you understand that,

You will be transformed.

It doesn't take long for transformation to occur.

It doesn't.

All it takes is understanding.

When the understanding is there,

Immediately transformation takes place.

Yes. When someone told me ‘we’re just a piece of God and when we die we go back to Him’, I pushed all that ‘religion’ out of my way and begin my present journey of dwelling in ‘the kingdom of God within’.

It’s an interesting perspective and I certainly respect it, however, as I see it GOD is everywhere and if spiritual people find a closeness to the source in an earthly religion through Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism etc, I equally respect that. No human has all the answers even after enlightenment. Maybe we’re not here for perfect and ultimate clarity, but to never stop learning.
