This meditation is from The People Pleaser's Guide to Putting Yourself First by Hollie Azzopardi. This is a technique you can use any time a sticky emotion arises that feels a little uncomfortable. We are going to be actively feeling the feelings by working with the understanding that once we identify and allow ourselves to fully connect with the feeling we are experiencing, it is more likely to move through us.

Find yourself in a comfortable position.

Perhaps you're lying down or sitting up with your back straight and your neck free to move.

Whatever feels best for you.

And when you feel ready,

Gently close your eyes.

Start by taking a few deep belly breaths here.

Breathe in deeply through the nose and allow the breath to be released as a sigh on the exhale.

Do this twice more,

Imagining that you are releasing any stress,

Tension or overwhelm as you exhale.

Now allow your breathing to settle,

Dropping into its natural rhythm however it wishes to move.

Very slowly,

Take your awareness to your mind.

Can you be the observer of your mind?

Notice the part of you that is not your thoughts,

The part that is witnessing them.

Can you witness these thoughts as they move through you with loving compassion?

Can you be gentle with yourself as you observe these thoughts and their movement?

Now imagine you have a little dial on the edge of your mind.

This is the volume dial.

Can you start to very gently turn down the noise of the mind?

Perhaps it doesn't disappear completely,

But can you just allow the noise to soften slightly?

When you feel ready,

Start to use the breath to seek out any points of tension,

Resistance,

Frustration or pain in the physical body.

Where are you drawn to?

Simply be the observer here once more.

Could you use the breath to send energy into these points of tension?

When discomfort arises,

Your most natural response would be to move away from it.

Here,

Know it's safe for you to breathe deeply into the discomfort.

Try not to run from it.

Breathe in deeply and allow the breath to gently shift any of this heaviness or stagnant energy.

Continuing to focus on the breath and allowing it to release any tension,

Start to observe any feelings that are arising for you.

Can you name these feelings or emotions?

Again,

Without judgment,

Simply observe these as you breathe.

If you notice yourself running off with a story as to why you're feeling what you're feeling,

Gently bring yourself back to using the breath as a release.

There is no need to run off with any stories right now.

Just breathe.

Continue to breathe deeply until you feel the shift in your body,

Perhaps a shift in emotion,

Feelings or tension.

There is no need to rush.

Just breathe.

Start to deepen the breath now.

If you moved through anything particularly sticky,

Perhaps shake out your hands or arms or move your head and neck slowly from side to side,

Just honouring whatever your body needs to do to shift this energy from your system.

When you feel ready,

You can very slowly come back to the space.
