This practice is more of a contemplative exercise, than a traditional meditation. It is focused primarily on self-inquiry, designed to increase self-awareness. When we are seeking transformation, on any level, cultivating self-awareness is an important first step, as we cannot change what we do not see. This meditation encourages you to see yourself clearly, deepening knowledge of your patterns, habits and beliefs, so you can begin to accept yourself just as you are. From this space of deep self-acceptance, we can find new reservoirs of self-compassion. Through this powerful combination of self-awareness, acceptance and compassion, we are inspired and empowered to create real change in our lives.

This is a self-inquiry meditation practice designed to help you see yourself clearly as you are right now.

Many of us practice meditation because we are seeking growth and self-transformation.

If we are seeking change on any level,

First we need to gain clarity around what it is we wish to change.

We cannot change what we do not see.

Take a few moments to become comfortable and settled in your chosen meditation posture.

Let the weight of your body settle.

Allow yourself to soften.

Become still and steady.

And very gently draw your attention into your heart space.

Remember the presence of breath here at the heart.

Feeling the gentle contraction,

Expansion of the rib cage with every breath.

Allow each breath to draw you more deeply into the heart.

As you rest here in the space of the heart,

Begin to consider the patterns that continually play out in your life.

These could be the patterns that you create through your own behavior,

Your own thoughts and actions.

These could be the patterns that you sense in the behavior of others towards you.

As you consider these patterns,

Begin to reflect upon what lessons are present here.

What truths do these patterns reveal?

Perhaps these patterns are trying to teach you something over and over again.

Perhaps you receive the lessons from these patterns,

But you seem to somehow need to learn them over and over again.

What lessons are you tired of learning?

What beliefs are causing you to continually learn these lessons?

What is it that is holding you back from growth,

From transformation?

Is it a person in your life,

A behavior,

Or perhaps a belief about yourself?

And now ask yourself,

How deeply do you desire transformation?

Are you ready to learn these lessons for the last time?

What patterns are you completely and totally done with?

Are you ready for change?

Or is there an identification with these patterns,

With these stories,

A clinging to your own suffering?

Take a few moments and simply reflect on what came up during this self-inquiry meditation,

Especially if you gained awareness of something new that you weren't expecting.

You might like to spend some time,

Perhaps writing in a journal.

And once you've integrated whatever it is you received during this practice,

Make sure to cultivate a deep sense of acceptance and self-compassion around whatever it is you're seeking to transform.

Remember,

What we resist persists.

Be gentle and kind to yourself as you consciously begin to let go of whatever is no longer serving you.

Oh my goodness, that was so powerful! Why am I clinging to these harmful patterns?

Beautifully said and a very motivating meditation. ❣️🥰 A little distracting with the swallowing noises and deep breaths taken by the teacher. 😔

Very helpful. I liked, “what lessons are you done learning “referring to Unhelpful patterns, done over and over,, Causing disappointment in oneself. This has given me new ideas for My goals of exercise and decluttering.

This short but powerful meditation really helps me to go deep and look within, finding patterns with self-compassion and acceptance. I love it!

I came across Hilary J through one of her IT LIVE events, and I was immediately drawn to her mix of playfulness and no-nonsense focus on tbd work at hand. This exercise is every bit as powerful as I’d hoped. It’s accessible to anyone at any experience level, although I would recommend having at least a little familiarity with meditation before trying it, only because she doesn’t spend a lot of time defining or explaining certain basic terms and concepts (“heart center,” “your favorite posture”) at the outset. (You can pick those up very easily elsewhere.) The exercise definitely bears repeat listening, although it’s not one I personally would turn to on a daily basis—I think it would be more effective if used at special times, perhaps birthdays, or tied to phases of the moon or changes of season. Minor tech note: the ending is a little subtle (no bell or other signal), so if you’re prone to drifting off or feel the need for a clear ending point, just be aware.

Very insightful. It was as if I finally got to look at myself in the mirror, but instead of looking at just the surface feelings and emotions I was able to really see my patterns and habits. Amazing. I’m sending this to all my friends
