by Guy Finley
Real-life never stops starting over; but, before we can enter into its ceaseless flow and realize its perfect freedom, we must agree to let go of our identification with any past attachments that create a present sense of self.
Transcript
I'm 73 years old.
And I can tell you that just like everyone in this world,
For too many years,
I held onto the idea that the world was going to change.
It's a difficult thing because if one says to oneself,
Well,
The world's not going to change,
Then we become cynics and bitter.
But the fact is that the world isn't going to change and can't unless the constituent elements that have created the content of our experience as human beings and our relationship to this world,
Unless that changes,
Absolutely nothing can.
And understood properly,
It places an immense responsibility on the individual,
Which by the way is the antithesis of the way the world is today.
The way the world is today,
Everybody places the responsibility for why the world is the way it is on the shoulders of other people,
Which is why you have political power and groups and clusters of human beings gathered together in the name of trying to change this,
That or the other.
It is the easiest thing in the world to find something outside of ourselves to change because when it doesn't change,
We have no one to blame except everyone else who didn't do their part.
So I want to set the tone here by bringing in this sort of a macrocosmic view of our relationship to the world to a simple idea that's far more microcosmic,
Much more personal.
There is a certain dilemma,
A very definite stage in the development of any man or woman who longs to have a relationship with the divine.
And that dilemma is that that person,
And it takes a long time,
Eventually that person realizes that when they're in that argument with their husband,
Their wife,
When there is that tension in the office place because someone has said something and you're thinking how toxic they are in traffic or you look at the world,
You read the news,
You see these incomprehensible cruelties being played out the way they're being played out,
The greed.
There has to come a moment where we realize that we have been in that moment of having that negative reaction of fearing,
Worrying,
Doubting,
Hating,
Resenting,
Feeling betrayed.
We have been in that moment a hundred thousand times at least.
Now not the same conditions,
But the same consciousness meeting those conditions a hundred thousand times.
And it is because it's the same consciousness meeting those conditions that the conditions that consciousness meets doesn't change.
Because you cannot separate the condition that one meets from the consciousness that is part and parcel with the reason it appears the way that it does.
How many times will I lose my temper and just let it pass like a ship in the night?
Because I'm onto something else that's pressing,
Producing that tension,
Not understanding that the outburst is the result of an unconscious conflict in the consciousness,
A tension that has to be released at some point as surely as a basketball held underwater is going to pop up.
We have to realize that if we don't want to keep repeating the same experience of life,
Then something is going to have to change in the moment of that experience.
If we want to stop repeating the experience that we have,
Something in the moment of that experience itself has to change.
Not afterwards,
Not judging,
Not finding something to control or try to fix,
But in the moment itself.
And it's rare for a man or a woman to actually be present enough to realize,
Have the awareness sufficient to realize,
I must have lost my temper a gazillion times.
I must have felt this bitterness.
I must have felt this fear.
I've been stressed my whole life over,
You fill in the blanks.
It is impossible for us to have a new relationship with life until we have a new relationship with the consciousness that experiences life the way that it does.
And our first relationship with each moment of life,
Our first relationship with each moment of life is an interior one.
This isn't something that most of us recognize because our experience is mostly a response to what we see as an exterior conflict or a problem.
But the first relationship begins within us in this consciousness.
And I point to this head,
That this head is not where consciousness is.
This head is in the way of consciousness.
So we have to change that consciousness.
And that's the root of all teachings,
Isn't it?
To have a change in the nature of consciousness itself is to begin to bring an end to that useless struggle that we're all involved in,
Where we're trying to rearrange the content of this consciousness.
We're trying to change the way it reacts without understanding anything of the actual nature of our consciousness itself,
Which by the grace of God and no other creature that I know is endowed with such,
We are given the capacity at some point to become aware of our own consciousness.
Not our consciousness telling us what to be aware of,
But to have an overriding,
Enveloping,
Immersive relationship with our consciousness that we are aware of what it is,
What it's doing,
All of its functions,
So that we're not sitting outside wondering why we're reacting.
We are on the inside looking out and participating as we do in what is required to change the way in which this consciousness responds.
And that begins with self-knowledge.
In many ways,
It has to dawn on us that our consciousness of itself is not going to and cannot change itself.
Every phony baloney teaching on this planet is trying to get you so geared up and wired and excited about you having seen what has been promised to you that will bring an end to your pain,
So that you embrace this image.
And in embracing the image,
You embrace the identity that comes with it.
And whenever we embrace an identity that is born of an image,
The very moment we embrace that identity is the same as embracing the tension and the fear,
The worry and the doubt,
When whatever that identity is we've assumed is suddenly threatened by a passing condition,
Which it always will be.
So the answer can't be a new image.
The answer can't be some condition we imagine.
The answer has to rest within understanding that if our consciousness cannot change itself,
And it can't.
And yet we know that our consciousness can be changed and must be,
Then we have to realize that that means in order for this consciousness to be changed,
Something is going to have to act upon it.
We're going to have to have a new relationship with what is unendingly acting on our consciousness and by the way,
Producing this awareness,
Bringing about the capacity to be self-aware.
It's very much like the story of a seed and sunlight,
A seed and sunlight.
A seed without sunlight is dead.
Within the seed is a latent possibility,
As within our consciousness is the latent possibility of another order of awareness that cannot be chained to a reaction.
And that sunlight acts on the seed and when the sunlight acts on the seed,
The latent possibility of the seed is suddenly stirred awake.
And when the latent activity of the seed is awakened,
Then under another set of laws,
Because now it is active in its own right,
It begins to enter into a relationship with life that it couldn't before because it was asleep.
And so you could say the seed is awakened by the sunlight that acts on it.
And that act of awakening is a way of,
How do I say this,
Is a conversion.
It's really the key word for our time together today.
The word convert means cause to change form,
Character or function.
To convert is to cause a change in form,
Character or function.
And there is something,
Again,
As above so below,
We can just look at the simple mustard seed,
Something has to act upon it in order to actualize and awaken its latent possibilities.
Something is intended to be acting on us and always is.
But we're not present to the moment where something acts on us because when it does,
It stirs for the most part stuff in our consciousness that we don't know is there,
That we don't want to know is there,
And that we don't know what to do with when it is stirred.
When you think about sunlight,
If you ever think about it at all,
Other than love it or wish it weren't there,
What is it that you think?
What do you see?
Sunlight,
The light that illuminates everything we see in and around us,
Is ceaseless in its flow.
We don't see the flow of life-giving light.
What we see is the effect of life-giving light in the forms and colors that this ceaseless flow of life-giving light creates.
But it doesn't change the fact that it is a ceaseless flow.
We walk out into a warm day,
We are standing in waves of light.
We are being bombarded,
Radiated by a certain level of energy that our bodies and this world can take into it and use for the purpose of bringing about a conversion in everything that these waves of living light touch.
And were it not for the movement of these living waves of light,
There would be nothing that ever moves on this planet because all would be dead and cold because it is not being brought into life by being brought into what that light does to it.
I see questions forming over here.
Do you think forgiveness is part of our human nature,
Our natural inclination?
Amy,
I'll try to get to that and I understand it.
Many of us on any given day are struggling with something that we don't know what to do with.
I have a heartache,
I have an enemy,
I have a problem.
I look at the world,
I don't know what to do with the pain I feel about it.
But if you'll listen carefully,
I might be able to reveal something to you and everyone else about these kind of questions because I'm pointing to something very important.
You see,
You and I think just,
I don't know if I should do this,
But Amy,
We think that it is that somehow or other,
I must be the one who rises and has love enough to forgive.
That's just a bunch of hooey.
Who are you to forgive?
Let those of you who are without sin cast the first stone.
Forgiveness is the natural conversion of a heart that sees and is changed in the moment when it is touched to see that it itself has been part of the very thing that is the problem,
That the anger,
The fear,
The worry,
All the things that people do to us in their pain that we are a participant in that pain itself and that once we understand there is no separate self,
Which is the most,
We all claim that we understand there's no separate self.
No,
We do not understand there's no separate self because if we did,
We would realize there's no separate me to forgive a separate you.
There's just a ceaseless revelation of a relationship that we are all in all the time where every last one of us is in fact an instrument of this living light that has brought about a process in our consciousness and in the action of that living light acting on this consciousness as it does ceaselessly,
That process of the activity on the passivity of this consciousness,
This latent seed,
It brings about something in that consciousness.
And when it brings up in that consciousness hatred,
Anger,
Conflict,
Fear,
Blame,
Complaint,
Finger pointing because that moment stirs something in us that has been buried there that we've buried a thousand billion years,
Then all it knows to do is to deny or reject what has acted on it.
So then it turns and it blames the condition for the pain the consciousness experiences in the presence of that condition.
Instead of understanding that that condition,
Like all conditions,
Is part of a movement of life,
That each condition that seems to be a separate event to us is just like the waves of light.
It is what is timeless moving into what is time.
It is the will of what is divine and has in its right the relationship to the world that has been created from it,
Bringing into that world that which the world as it receives it can start to realize is trying to bring about a reconciliation,
A change in that consciousness.
This is why we've all heard the expression,
Let go and let God.
What does it mean,
Let go and let God?
It means there is a ceaseless flow of living light,
A ceaseless entrance into this physical world and time of something that is timeless in its nature and that that ceaseless flow creates a ceaseless conversion,
Though we don't see it and we do not profit from it in the true sense of the word prophet,
By the way,
Which in the ancient Aramaic is to ascend.
And so for us,
We sit at this kind of a crucible where this ceaseless action,
What we see is the world acting on us.
We don't see the waves of light.
We don't see that we are sitting inside of a standing wave and that all of that produces in us this tumult and out of this moment where what is active touches what is passive,
Something that is beautiful can appear because a conversion can take place and the point of that activity on this consciousness is in its revelation and integration and completion and liberation or that same moment can produce in us something that resists and denies that moment,
Doesn't want it.
And in not wanting it not only fixes that identity and that consciousness but fixes the guarantee that that consciousness will reincarnate and repeat the experience it doesn't want a thousand times,
Not recognizing its complicity in the repetition of the moments it doesn't want.
Not recognizing its complicity in the repetition in the reincarnation of the moments it doesn't want because this consciousness keeps reincarnating itself instead of being converted.
I'll just slow down a little bit.
Look the seed,
The mustard seed,
It has to comply.
That radiation hits the ground,
It warms the ground.
Can you see the earth receives the light.
The earth can't use the light directly but it takes from the light the radiant energy in the light,
The warmth.
Then that light that is converted into warmth is then touching the seed.
So the sunlight doesn't touch the seed directly but an element of the sunlight does and when that element touches the mustard seed,
Lo and behold,
The mustard seed complies.
It complies because it cannot deny the converting,
The conversion that it is being asked to enter into in that stream of what is natural in this world so that the mustard seed might actually be actualized the way it's intended to be actualized.
The point of conversion that I'm describing is where the will,
If you will,
Of what is timeless intersects the will of what is in time where what is formless and pure energy,
Perhaps pure principle,
Pure idea,
A living word,
Enters into all that has been formed from itself so that light interacts with light.
It's hard to see,
Isn't it?
You look at a tree,
You don't see light,
You see a form but the form is energy and the energy is light so that a new active light acts on a passive form of light to bring about a relationship between the two of them so that not just a symbiosis might appear but that an integration can take place as it should because it is one thing acting on itself,
The divine acting on itself to bring about in itself the perfection of itself in time according to what is timeless.
Everything does that.
Said differently,
What is acts on what was.
What is acts on what was to complete,
To bring about in what was through its conversion the fulfillment of its possibility which is to be an instrument of the conversion of one form of light,
One form of life,
One form of love and bring it into and accept the will of that and then become an instrument of that in a ceaseless fashion so that if you can see it,
There is this perfect circulation of what is essentially celestial and divine in origin between what is a creative force and what is created and intended to be the instrument of the further,
The furtherance of that creation and if it's true that what I'm describing to you which it is,
As above so below,
Then why wouldn't it be equally true of all things,
Not just the seeds,
Not just the birds and the bees in this ceaseless relationship.
Why wouldn't it be true of the thoughts,
The memories,
The bodies of energies stored in us as memory,
Meaning if it's true that what is ceaseless acts ceaselessly on the seed,
Then why wouldn't it be true that what is ceaselessly acting would be ceaselessly acting on my consciousness?
Because it is.
And when I say ceaselessly acting on my consciousness,
It is ceaselessly producing the potential for me to be aware of being a participant in this conversion process itself.
Rebirth.
Not what we experience,
Most of us,
Which is this living light,
This timeless will,
This wave of what is divine coming into the world that is made in its image.
For most of us,
When something comes in and stirs us,
Touches us,
The first reaction is to see the disturbance that we're experiencing as a problem.
And the reason that we experience the disturbance produced by this ceaseless act of conversion is because we are identified with the images,
The thoughts,
The beliefs,
That this very energy itself has come to change,
To convert,
To produce from it something useful instead of it being the seed of useless suffering that it is when it resists the sunlight,
The God light,
The light of life that is trying to bring it into this ceaseless process of reconciliation,
Of atonement.
So many words have been ruined by religion.
Poor human beings beat over the head,
Told that you have to fit in in some way into some ideology,
Some process by which you will finally be perfected,
So that the very idea and the image of that,
Which by the way is in time,
Inculcated into this consciousness,
Instead of becoming the liberation factor,
Becomes the imprisoning factor.
While in the meantime all the things that happen,
Everything that comes into our life,
Which by the way is a steady stream,
It isn't you and I think what comes into our life is the moment that we're suddenly aware of.
Talk about being behind the curve.
All of that is meant to bring about in this consciousness the purpose of this consciousness,
Which is its relationship to this broader intelligence that is working tirelessly,
Seamlessly,
Ceaselessly from the highest point all the way to the lowest point to bring about this divine circulation produced by an unending conversion in every creature that enters into it.
We are as human beings,
We're the only thing that sits outside of it.
Can you imagine if the mustard seed,
Feeling the stirring energy of that light,
Felt and said to itself,
What's that?
That's a problem.
I don't want that.
I don't want to feel that.
That's what we do.
I don't want to feel this,
I don't want to feel that.
I don't want to know about this problem or I know about the problem and I'm going to control the conditions that I blame for that problem when the problem sits in a very distinct fashion in a consciousness that doesn't understand.
Its actual purpose,
Its role on this planet is to act as a converting,
An instrument of conversion to participate in the conversion.
We live in a world of,
We live in a world of becoming.
Kate has put up here some questions,
Is divine physical like,
Is it a matter of what's made of,
No the divine isn't physical and yet the physical exists because of the divine.
Do memories have energy and negative energy needs to be released by a physical act,
Walking,
Listening to music,
Journaling?
No,
No,
No.
That's you and I spinning off,
We exercise to get rid of the pressure of a consciousness that is set against itself and I'm not saying don't exercise,
I'm just saying that everything we're told,
You know,
Get a pillow and smack it.
That's how to convert,
Change this energy.
No,
That is not how to convert this energy,
That is how to release the energy before it meets the point and brings about the conversion in the consciousness.
That's what we're all doing all the time.
What do you think distractions are?
Why do we distract ourselves?
Because we can't take being what we are,
Where we are,
When we're being it because as all of that comes into our life,
It is actually producing a vital relationship,
A kind of a flux between what is active that we have no say over,
You can't change anything about what comes down from the heavens themselves,
From that will,
That intelligence,
That perfect love that is all the time trying to produce on earth as it is in heaven,
You can't do anything about that.
And yet we meet the moments that it produces and then we take the moments and try to change the moments to fit what we want and feel life should be like and that's actually called hell.
I don't care how good you get it,
You know and I know as well as anything on this planet,
Every last one of those sandcastles of perfected life as imagined are washed away the minute one thing goes wrong.
We're talking about a different kind of life,
A life that we are created to enter into where,
I must get on with this,
We live in a world of becoming.
We live in a world of becoming,
Not in a world where when something comes then we'll be complete because when we live in a world when something comes we'll be complete,
We also live in a world when what we imagine would complete us is threatened then we're right back where we started from where I began the talk at the top of it.
When we have all these experiences,
I'm not saying that we don't have the experiences born out of the things that we do,
I'm simply saying that if we live in a world of becoming then that means that who and what we are are a part of that becoming itself and becoming doesn't have an identity,
Becoming doesn't have a name.
Why do you think through the centuries until it all got wrecked by men and women seeking to control other human beings by giving them some kind of ironclad image that they could put in their mind,
Why do you think it was always said that give no graven image that God has no name?
Because that which we call God,
Which by the way isn't God,
Is an act.
It is a creation of a ceaseless kind,
The revelation of a ceaseless creation and the revelation of a ceaseless creation is this world in which we live a world of becoming,
The world of where the waves of light touch the seeds and the seeds become part of the wave and out of the wave of the seed comes the flower and the tree and out of the flower and tree the wave of the creatures that feed and you can see this.
I may not wax eloquently here but the point is to understand that there is this movement,
A constant conversion and you and I are intended in a very unique way to be a part of this constant conversion,
To play our role,
That's why thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
What do you think Christ was alluding to or any master when it comes to that?
That we have as a human being a certain relationship between what is heavenly and what is earthly.
Within us lives the middle ground,
Call it the soul if you want.
To me the words are obstacles,
The words are blockages because they're connected to thought,
Thought connected to knowledge,
Knowledge to the past and therefore an identity every time the word soul comes up a person feels oh I know what that is.
Oh you do not know what a soul is.
No human being knows what a soul is.
Some human beings grow into their souls by allowing the matter of this body,
This earth to be converted into something that can produce this kind of new life,
This rebirth.
So here because I'm getting to the end of our time together.
Yes Sandy we are a note in the song.
But Sandy everybody else it's such a lovely idea isn't it?
I'm a note in the Divine Song.
In order to be a note in the song you have to know and participate in every note in that song.
And there are dissonant notes,
There are sharp notes,
There are flat notes.
We love the idea of conversion as long as it doesn't bring any unhappiness with it.
As long as I don't have to suffer I'm all on board with the idea of letting the will of the Divine act on the body and to bring out of the body the nascent seed that sits inside of the body so that a soul might be formed,
Might awaken to this life.
Conversion requires conscious suffering.
We don't know anything about the seed in the ground,
What it goes through but we do know that the kernel of corn has to struggle against the shell,
The husk.
We know that the baby in the womb is constantly moving,
Adjusting,
Shaking,
That there is a relationship between what comes out of the womb and the suffering required for it to do so on the part of the mother.
We know that wherever there is birth of any kind there is some kind of suffering and there is no birth without something,
One thing being converted into another.
You take food into your body.
If it weren't for the fact that the body higher than the food it takes in can bring about a conversion in the food it digests then we'd have no energy just to sit here and talk to each other.
It is seamless,
It is ceaseless and if it is seamless and is ceaseless the way I'm describing then you and I have to begin to understand that we are asked,
If we're asked at all,
I can't speak for you,
What would be the new response in this moment?
I have an interview I have to go on,
I've got to talk,
I've got to go give to some business associates,
I've got to go have a conversation with my kid,
I'm going to get in my car,
I'm going to go stand in line at Walmart,
I look at the financial news,
I am in a virtually almost ceaseless turmoil because something in me is always trying to figure out how to get through the moment,
Listen please,
How can I get through this moment unscathed?
Oh God please let us understand we are not here in this life to get through moments unscathed.
We are here in this life to let every moment bring about the purpose of its appearance and listen and not just in my consciousness because there is no such thing as just my consciousness.
This is one of the greater mysteries of all when it comes to this idea that if I'm going to actually enter into this moment and leave it a different order of human being I am going to have to go through the process of that conversion that changes my consciousness in the moment and I must be there present to the change.
Not going oh isn't this great,
Although we do know moments like that when something spectacular happens and unspeakable beauty,
But we're talking about presently anyway this idea that we are meant to be in a moment so present to ourselves,
Aware of ourselves,
That when all of this movement takes place and all of the stirring takes place and we see in ourselves this almost incessant wish that if I can just get through this if I can just get that things will be better if we can understand that consciousness is the impediment to our perfection not the path to it then we might have a chance at least to recognize my responsibility right now is to patiently bear what I am being given to see and go through in this moment because if I will patiently bear what I'm being given to see and go through this moment not judge it not push it away not try to change it but be the witness to the process of conversion to be the one who goes through that and on the other side comes out with new eyes new ears a new way to look at life because my consciousness has itself changed.
And I have to stop now and keep these talks at 40 minutes but you know I did an interview with a lovely lady Justine Tom's New Dimensions and she if you ever get a chance you can find the interview and by the way I speak three times a week online you go to my profile seek me out on the web I talk for free nothing to join.
She was so upset when we were talking because I was talking to her about this this first this this initial activity this initial responsibility because she is an activist she is trying to change the world she couldn't understand what I was trying to say because it seems to her and to millions of human beings well if I'm just concerned with my own conversion then isn't that selfish don't have to be concerned with the world the way it is but you have to understand and the reason that this process and it does there's no conversion overnight we read about like St.
Paul.
I guarantee you any human being who has had some kind of extraordinary moment of conversion a full-blown awakening that that seed was fully prepped long before it took a body but here in this understanding we can realize if I will persist and be patiently present enough to this moment of conversion if I can understand there's no separate self then my patience is understood I'm working this awareness this capacity that we have is struggling to bring about a conversion in the whole of human consciousness not just mine there is no just mine every sacrifice that any man or woman if they get far enough along the line to allow the moment to release them from the content of their old opinions and beliefs from their greed and their fear any human being who gets far enough even just to see some of that has begun the process of conversion and it isn't just their consciousness going through the conversion because there is no separate consciousness the whole of the consciousness has changed and it's a long road this is my masters from all of time have said as I say to you no no human being who awakens will ever cease into the whole of humanity the whole of that consciousness has changed and they can say that because they are part of that consciousness and they know themselves as being such we are meant to be like that we are meant to live in that world and to act from that understanding.
Learn to allow life to reveal what is concealed if you will stand at the revelation of what has been concealed what is concealed is converted on the spot by what reveals it that's the best that I can say in the short time that I have I hope I see you next Saturday I'm speaking tomorrow find out about it online if you want do your work and there is so much work to do and yet it will all be done and you will be the one who knows it is being done through you if you are willing to go through this conversion be well bye.

Simply the best to explain the unexplainable! Life. Consciousness. Presence with the Divine
