#1: The work to drop any negative reaction... starts where? With being still. Why? Because to be inwardly still is the same as being aware of the difference between the darkness moving through you, and the Light of your True Self that cannot be deceived, let alone moved by any shadow. #2: The work to serve the Divine lesson in every moment... starts where? With being still. Why? Because to be inwardly still is not just how we honor the intended impression of these moments, but (it) helps to ground us in the Garden of Revelation, where we are shown all that we need to transcend what we have yet to see is true about ourselves. #3: The work to be kind with those who trouble you... starts where? With being still. Why? Because being still aligns you with the Divine source of stillness itself: a living light that reveals, without taking thought, the wisdom of agreeing to suffer yourself before judging, and then blaming anyone else for failing to live up to your demands.

So,

We're going to look at something that on one hand is so evident as to be right in front of our eyes all the time,

Though we often miss it.

But that in one respect,

Because it is so obvious,

It goes unseen.

Our topic for our time together is,

Be still and be profitable beyond imagination.

Be still and be profitable beyond imagination.

Surely,

If you've studied with me before,

You've heard me at least from time to time call on certain parts of scripture,

Not just Western scripture,

But any scripture in which the truth is evidenced by the individual speaking those words,

Who,

By the way,

Must have seen that himself or herself.

This idea,

What person taking thought can add one cubit to their stature?

We've all heard that.

What does it profit a person to have gained the whole world and to have lost his or her soul,

Which is a lot stronger,

Isn't it?

Gain the whole world and to lose my soul.

It's quite a mouthful if you really grasp what they're saying.

When Christ spoke about,

Take no thought for the morrow,

The actual translation of the Aramaic is,

Who by being anxious can change one thing about the conditions in and over which they are feeling that anxiety?

Think about it.

Who by being anxious can change one thing about the condition in which and over which they are feeling that anxiety?

When we really think about these things,

If we do,

And I hope that we do,

It'll bring us to a gradual understanding and the understanding I put in the first key lesson that I'm going to ask Kate to post now so that we can all read it together.

I have two key lessons and then a whole series of exercises,

And I will get through all of it.

Here's the key lesson,

And it connects with this anxiety that we're talking about.

Within any peace we name,

Imagine,

Pursue,

And then struggle to protect,

Lurks a fear that stalks those who dream they can possess what is beyond imagination.

Within any peace we name,

Imagine,

Pursue,

And then struggle to protect,

Lurks a fear that stalks those who dream they can possess what is beyond imagination.

Why I ask you,

Is it that anxiety is never far off from us in any given moment?

And always I ask you to see that what I'm showing you is true,

And if it's not true,

If you find it not true,

Then I'm not for you.

This work that I'm bringing into the world is not for you.

But if you suspect,

As you should,

That anxiety isn't something that just pops up when someone or something goes wrong,

But anxiety can visit you in your bed at night.

It can be there when you open your eyes in the morning without any conditions whatsoever.

Why?

Because there is something going on inside of this nature that always finds a condition that validates this general sense of disturbance,

And that this general sense of disturbance takes nothing outside of the mind involved in its own estimation of life of that moment of itself to make itself anxious.

And even more important,

Especially in the Western world,

Why am I visited by anxiety in the midst of whatever abundance it is that I've acquired,

That I've struggled to produce?

Can we see at least agree in some former fashion that our constant struggle,

In quotes,

To be productive,

And if not a struggle to be productive,

Learning some new way in which to some skill by the same name that will bring an end to this anxiety?

I thought when enough people said that I was a good person,

I would be all right.

I wouldn't have to defend myself because somebody questions my character overtly or not.

I thought that when I achieved a certain modicum of success and was able to live in a certain kind of house,

You fill in the blank,

Had a certain kind of job,

Making a certain figure.

Thought that that sense of being productive would bring an end to this anxiety,

But it doesn't bring an end to this anxiety.

By and large,

There's a specter that follows us around,

If we're honest enough,

That given any set of circumstances and a slight change in the wind,

And the next thing we know,

We're scanning the horizon trying to figure out what we have to do in order to protect what we believe we acquired through our productivity.

On one level,

That makes perfect sense,

But on another level,

It makes no sense at all because at what point do I achieve through my productivity,

Through my attempt to be a profitable human being,

According to what my mind says is a productive human being?

When do I finally free myself from the visitation of this anxiety,

This fear?

And the answer is,

If we're honest,

Never.

Why?

Because,

And this is a separate talk,

Within this human consciousness,

There is a certain syndrome,

A certain sickness.

And for the sake of simplicity,

We can call it the never enough syndrome.

I can never hear enough good things.

How do I know that's true?

Because if somebody says one bad thing,

Even intimates it,

I'm anxious,

I'm afraid.

No matter what I own,

It's not quite enough.

I need to finish it up.

I need a little more.

And so the whole idea of being productive,

Leading to being a profitable human being and profitably being someone who escapes the pain of this anxiety,

It all goes out the window.

It's all gone.

Why?

Because either we're in the midst of trying to find the next thing to pursue to be profitable,

Or,

And usually subsequently,

We're in some kind of fear that we're not productive enough.

Maybe that's not your character.

It is for a lot of people.

So that we find ourselves always either trying to protect what we've produced or judging and despising ourselves for not making more effort to achieve what?

What we've imagined will make us a profitable human being.

Why can't the mind rest?

Why can't a human being enjoy being a human being?

Not enjoy what they have.

That's nice.

But why can't a man or a woman enjoy being what they are?

Independent of what they are attached to and identified with,

That they thought would make them profitable,

But that examined properly,

We can see does not make that man or woman profitable,

Because no one is profitable who lives with fear.

Period.

No one is profitable who can be made anxious because the wind changes directions.

And this is what I want to examine with you as deeply as we can,

And as deeply as you'll allow.

Because that's going on all the time.

This is why people go insane.

Wind up taking psychotropic drugs as they get older and older,

Because they can't go out and make themselves profitable anymore.

And whatever it was that they thought made them profitable isn't enough.

Or they have to somehow or other change their circumstances so that in changing the circumstances,

They can get rid of whatever's bothering them,

Where they are,

As they are.

So we never question this.

I'm 76 years old.

I can't tell you how long it took to even begin to question this cultural,

This social mindset about what it means to be a productive human being.

In Ecclesiastes,

One of my favorite passages says,

Those who struggle in the field of opposites,

Those who try to achieve something that will free them from what they don't want to experience in themselves,

Struggle in vain.

And all is vanity for those who live from that idea of what it means to be a profitable human being.

Again,

How do we know it's in vain?

Because I'm a victim of my own sense of what it takes to be a productive human being.

It says that you got to do more,

Man.

And if you're at any point in your life where you're sick and tired of hearing that,

Then you would begin to ask,

What is the aim of this struggle to be profitable as imagined?

Because whatever it is that we say is the aim of being profitable as imagined,

And you fill in the blank according to your culture,

Your social standing,

Whatever it is that we name as that can't be that.

Because if it was that,

Then there would be peace in my achievements.

There would be peace in what I've acquired.

If what I've acquired to be profitable would bring about that peace as imagined.

And that's the whole point.

Our time on earth has proven not just to us,

But the entire culture in which we live and grown up in.

My mother,

My father,

Yours.

God help me,

My father,

My mother,

Your parents,

Their parents,

And parents beyond.

All of them struggling to achieve what they said would make a better life for us.

When all they gave us was this terrible mindset that what it means to be a productive human being is to have to drink and take drugs and spend time with people you don't want to spend time with in order to achieve what you've imagined will bring you some seemingly beautiful peace just beyond your grasp.

So here's human beings and in one way or another,

Desperate.

We don't think it's desperate.

You're sitting in your chair and something won't let you just sit there.

Something in the mind,

Yeah,

I've got to do this.

That's not got to go there.

Make another plan.

Why?

Because all of that activity of that unconscious nature dissatisfied with the experience of being as it is and well it should be because it is a conflicted nature,

It has to come up with something new by which to give it the profit to be profitable.

It believes it's missing.

Otherwise,

Why else would it be in pain?

Why else would it not want to just be with itself?

Other than it's not enough to be itself.

And so we judge ourselves and we judge this life trying to come up with a productivity that we've imagined.

But if you're following me up to this point,

And I'll ask how many of you are,

This productivity as we've imagined it,

This profitability cannot be what it is that we're looking for.

Can you see it?

Now we're going to make a big transition.

Please follow me.

I don't mean me.

Follow this stream of thought.

See if it doesn't reflect back to you the reality of your own existence.

Then we know we're working at something that isn't my or your condition,

But a condition of human consciousness.

What is all of this attempt to be profitable about?

All of my productivity,

Grind,

Think,

Worry,

Hash this out.

What is all of that about?

Why?

Because if you get rid of all the other stuff that we've given names to for these actions,

What's underneath all of that is I would just like to be at peace.

For us,

Peace is tomorrow.

For us,

Peace is the temporary satiation of this appetite,

Whatever it is,

For money,

Food,

Or social politic.

But peace has nothing to do with conditions that we can name or identify with.

And here's the big turn in this talk.

Real peace can never be a product of personal effort.

Real peace can never be a product of personal effort.

Oh my God,

What does that mean?

I can see you've kind of led me to this idea that all of my personal efforts,

All of my mind grinding away at night,

Not letting me sleep,

Occupying me when I'm driving in my car.

Instead of being able to look out and see the beauty of nature,

All I see is this strange horizon where something may be coming or trying to get away from something.

If real peace can't be the product of personal effort,

Where is this peace?

And we can begin at least to get to this idea where we're looking at what peace is not the product of effort.

Love isn't the product of effort.

Beauty isn't the product of effort.

That which is divine by nature,

That which is kind and true,

Isn't a product of effort.

It's a gift that we've been given that we don't know we've been given because we're too busy imagining some gift we can give ourselves.

And that's where all of our fear lives.

Try and see this with me.

Peace cannot be a product of personal effort.

Why?

I'm going to show you,

At least I'm going to explain it.

Then if you can see it,

You'll have a chance to start transcending some of this nonsense that occupies us all the time.

Here I am.

And let's just say for the sake of spirituality,

And God help us,

It's part of our present nature,

I'm going to make an effort to be still.

You know,

I'm going to carve out time.

I'm going to make an effort to be still.

But can I see,

Can you see that effort,

At least in this view,

Has to be an attempt to overcome whatever I see as a disturbance?

If I'm going to make an effort to be still,

It must be because I don't want to be bothered.

I don't want to be involved in this brouhaha,

This nature that's bubbling up all the time.

I am resisting my own nature when I make an effort to be still.

Why else would I make an effort to be still?

When you look out and you see something beautiful in nature,

Are you making an effort to be still?

Or are you brought into a stillness that exists prior to you entering it,

And that will be there after you leave it,

But that is one and the same as your own nature?

The stillness is already there.

The peace is already there.

We're not.

Because our mind almost never stops imagining some time to come when that long-awaited peace that we've hoped for.

Again,

Paul said,

St.

Paul,

Our hopes cannot be in things seen.

Our hopes cannot be in peace imagined,

But must be in an unimaginable peace,

Must be in things unseen.

So if you're following me,

Here's this attempt,

My effort to overcome my own thinking.

And then I sit down,

You should know this,

I sit down,

I'm going to meditate,

And my mind drives me crazy.

So then I have to add something to the mixture.

And I keep adding things so completely that eventually I'm so distracted by all of the attempts I'm making to be still,

I don't notice that I'm completely caught up in my effort to be still,

Because I'm deriving from it some imagined state.

So the effort to overcome this conflict between a nature that can't be still,

Constantly measuring,

Comparing itself in every possible circumstance,

This effort to overcome this conflict is itself born of conflict.

Conflict cannot overcome conflict.

Do not oppose what opposes you,

Christ said.

So if we understand that,

Then this effort to be still cannot bring about the peace this mind imagines when it hopes to find peace.

And the evidence speaks for itself.

And yet even so,

We remain conditioned to believe that somehow or another,

Effort to achieve what we imagine as the pathway to some imagined peace is the way to bring an end to the conflict,

When all we're doing is feeding that nature,

Feeding that loop.

We must see the need for another kind of effort.

We must understand that we must have a new understanding about the nature of what being a productive human being is.

How can a man or a woman say that he or she is productive?

When even with all they have,

They cast a jealous eye on someone who has more.

How can someone say they're a profitable human being?

When all that has to happen is one little thing take place that changes what they're identified with and out the window goes their peace and their profitability and into their life,

Into their heart and mind comes the turmoil of trying to figure out how do I regain or protect what it is that this cruel world or that cruel person took from me?

That's what this talk is for and about,

To see the need to participate in and work as diligently as possible.

First to understand how much has been lost in this idea of being profitable.

Because that's all we know to do.

Profitable by comparison.

Profitable by comparison,

Whether comparing ourselves to others or letting our own mind compare us to what our parents had or didn't have and how we should have this and then we achieve what we've imagined.

Profitable by comparison.

If you hear nothing else,

Remember this,

There is no profit in comparison,

Only conflict.

Because only a conflicted mind compares what it imagines it should have to what it fears it doesn't.

You hear one part of what I'm saying and your life will change and I must add at this point that those changes when they start taking place will not be the changes that you want.

The change is going to be that you're no longer identified with what you are chained to now.

What is this new kind of effort?

An effort that doesn't bring about conflict and isn't created by it.

This new effort,

Like the new eyes,

New ears that a man or a woman must have to understand the true teachings,

This new effort belongs to a new man,

Belongs to a new woman,

Belongs to the human being who gradually being enlightened by the constant lashing of their own nature,

On one hand whipping them to go get what they imagine will make them free and then when they get there finding themselves bound by the conditions they created.

This new effort is to be still.

What a beautiful paradox,

The effort to be still.

We said,

We spent time talking about this,

You can't make an effort to bring about peace,

I mean you can,

But the very effort requires imagining peace and then the imagined peace begins this becomes the source of our pain when what we've imagined is threatened.

What is this effort to be still?

Take a nice deep breath.

Katie,

Let's bring up the second key lesson,

Please,

And then we'll get into this in depth.

Read along with me.

It's a little play on words,

But I will explain it thoroughly.

Before we can hope to enter into the peace of the divine life that dwells within us,

We must first learn how to search for it in the light place.

Before we can hope to enter into this peace of the divine life,

The peace that passes understanding that already dwells within us,

We must learn how to search for it in the light place.

Seek ye first the kingdom of heaven,

All else is added to you.

I've talked about this innumerable times.

If the kingdom of heaven is within me,

Where am I to look for it?

Is there time and space and distance between myself and the love of God?

I must believe there is because the love of God,

As I imagine it,

Isn't enough when someone comes along and seems to hate me or despise me or denigrate me.

I don't know anything about God in that moment,

Although I may from time to time turn to what I've imagined God is,

What I've imagined Christ is,

And then derive consolation from that imagination.

Well,

I wouldn't have to struggle to imagine what was love and kind if I was already in a place where it lives and I live within it.

So before we can hope to enter into this peace of this divine life that dwells within us,

We have to learn how to search for it in the light place.

Where is the light place?

Within you.

Not in thought.

God,

Not in thought.

Isn't that terrible?

All we know to do is look to our own thoughts to find what it is that thought will never know and can never know.

Something else has required this new effort to be still.

So with the remaining time,

I've written out three summary key lessons and three spiritual exercises.

They will be posted,

So you'll have to come back.

I've only got like 20 minutes.

I can give seven minutes to each of them.

Kate,

Let's bring up the first key lesson and special spiritual exercise,

Please.

And those of you who are still here and listening to me,

Don't get ahead.

Just work with me.

Just be still.

Let yourself see.

Number one,

The work to drop any negative reaction starts where?

Don't get ahead of me.

The work to drop a negative reaction.

Why would I want to drop a negative reaction?

I'm justified.

Where does the work to actually drop the negative reaction,

Where does it start?

The answer with being still.

Not with not wanting that reaction.

That's action-reaction.

That's a loop.

Not with judging myself for the negative reaction,

Because that seems to prove I'm other than the reaction.

That's division.

I'm still trying to overcome myself,

Which I can't do.

It's impossible.

So why does the work to drop a negative reaction begin with being still?

Read along with me.

Because to be inwardly still is the same as being aware of the difference between the darkness moving through you and the light of your true self that cannot be deceived,

Let alone moved by any shadow.

We want to be strong according to the images we have of what strength is.

Any image we're identified with is weakness personified.

The strength isn't in overcoming the negative reaction.

The strength is in the light that shows us that reaction belongs to an unconscious nature that we've been deceived into identifying with and that every time it moves itself,

It carries us with it into choosing the actions it designs and tells us if we dedicate ourselves to being productive this way,

We'll be profitable and in our profitability,

We will at last be free of our own negative reactions because nothing will disturb us ever again.

Being inwardly still is the same as being aware of the difference between the darkness moving through you and the light of your true self that can't be deceived.

Who you are cannot be deceived into identifying with anything because instead of being identified,

You're aware of the temptation of identification and you know it cannot be profitable.

It is never productive to identify with anything because the moment we're identified with anything we've imagined,

We then live in fear of losing what we've imagined or ourselves accordingly.

Long ago,

I wrote this one idea that the safety of perfect silence,

The safety of perfect stillness,

Is that nothing can enter into it unannounced.

The strength,

The wisdom,

The goodness,

The power of perfect stillness is that nothing can enter into it unannounced,

Which means if my first work is to be still as best I understand it,

Then in that awareness that is produced,

Entering into what is already there within us,

Be still and know that I am God.

Translation Aramic,

Be still and know that I am there before you,

After and at all times within you and that nothing moves,

That it doesn't move first through me and then into you.

Be still and know that I am God.

So if nothing can enter into that stillness without announcing itself,

That means that that awareness is instantaneously cognizant,

Conscious of whatever it is that's moving through it.

It knows its character.

Imagine not having to think about whether this is a right thought or a wrong thought,

But by the very fact of that light that is stillness itself,

You can see immediately without taking thought,

Ah,

That's a temptation to identify and I've been down that road.

That's the fear that I've seen a thousand times.

I will not say I to it.

Then you understand where that first real work starts being still.

Let's bring up the second of these summary key lessons and special exercises.

Kate,

Please.

Work along with me.

The work to serve to serve the divine lesson in every moment starts where the work to serve the divine lesson in every moment starts where?

First,

Let's understand that.

Not only is every moment and that's not really the right words,

There are no right words in English for this.

Our words and our language is dedicated to serving time.

The true language doesn't serve time.

It reveals the unity of time.

So for us,

The moment comes along and because of this nature that has already decided what it means to be productive or profitable,

It measures the moment according to its own ideas of what profitable is.

And then I either love or despise the moment according to my own estimation.

To serve the divine lesson means I understand there's no moment that the divine isn't revealing its entirety.

And that I as a human being made in the image of God,

The brother of this living light,

That there's no revelation that takes place that I'm outside of.

So whatever it is that's being revealed seemingly in the world outside of me is instantaneously corresponding with the world within me.

How else do I know it?

So to learn the lesson isn't that there's this lesson and that lesson and then I do this because I learned the lesson now I know what it means to be profitable.

To learn the lesson in the moment is to understand that I'm never being introduced to the totality of myself and allowing that stillness,

That light to show me as I said in the first example,

This is right,

This doesn't fit,

This won't work,

That will always be present,

Whatever it may be.

Why?

Because to be inwardly still,

Read along with me,

Is not just how we honor the intended impression of these moments,

But to be inwardly still grounds us in the garden of revelation where we are shown all that we need to transcend what we have yet to see is true about ourselves high and low.

There is no end to the manifestation of what is divine.

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth and again the translation created not manifested but imagined that there was something without end,

Perfect light,

Endless.

The heavens and the earth,

That which is contracting,

That which has gravity,

That which is dark and drawing everything to it,

So this first imagined state contained the entirety of possibilities in the opposites and that's what we are.

So that there's never a moment where we are not being shown these seemingly polar opposites so that the lesson is to realize that they are not conflicting one another,

They are complementary and when they are seen to participate that way we participate in this garden of revelation,

In the kingdom of heaven and all that it intends for the human beings who are willing to enter into it.

The last of these special lessons and exercises,

The work to be kind with those who trouble you starts where?

Just stop for a second.

Do you think you're the only person troubled by other people?

When we're troubled by other people we believe that we are in fact the only one experiencing that trouble.

Did you know that you can't have trouble with another human being who isn't troubled by you having that trouble?

That resistance gives rise to resistance and as resistance gives rise to resistance comes with it the insistence that you wouldn't be experiencing the moment as you are if that person were the way they are so that we're instantaneously caught up not in the garden of revelation but in the garden of condemnation,

The garden of judgment where hell lives and then we blame the hell of our own mind's perception on the person we blame for that pain.

I'll speak personally and I'll go into more depth not tomorrow.

I have more to talk about this topic tomorrow but connected to the idea of the good Samaritan.

If a man or a woman spent their whole life working spiritually as best they could illuminated along the way as they will be if they are honest with their wish to be honest the day may come and it's a long ways off when even if the other human being troubles you you know for a fact that the trouble doesn't begin with them and when you know for a fact that what troubles you doesn't begin with the person you blame for that pain then in that moment you are meeting that that situation from an understanding that requires listen an understanding that requires you give yourself up not an understanding that demands the other person understand you the work should be kind with those who trouble you starts where with being still why because being still aligns you aligns us with the divine source of stillness itself and that divine source of stillness itself is a living light a christ that reveals listen that reveals without taking thought the wisdom of agreeing to suffer yourself before judging and then blaming anyone else for failing to live up to your demands and then blaming anyone else for failing to live up to your demands one of my favorite passages in the new testament the story of christ in the in the in the town square everybody's getting ready to stone this poor woman she's she's considered a harlot because she's she's still married and and separated but you know sleeping with another man so forth and so on and they're getting ready to stone her because that was the judaic law at the time an eye for an eye a tooth for a tooth there is no love in law law is there is no love in law until the law becomes love itself that law that becomes love itself christ taught them without having to teach them one thing he he never said let me explain this to you he said look go ahead and stone her if you are if if you've never sinned according to judaic law if you've never sinned if you've never broken a commandment stoner do it and so with those simple words he made those people become self-reflective so that for a split second instead of being identified with an unconscious nature that was so disturbed because this person broke the law they could see the nature that was disturbed was as much a liar and a sinner as was the person they were about to stone and they had to drop their stones that's the beauty of that story so without taking thought patience tolerance kindness was exhibited not as an attempt to be patient and kind but as an understanding brought about by being still in that moment and seeing for themselves i'm no different than those i judge and i never have been and we live in this strange fantasy that if everybody could just be the way we are we then we get along we get along with everybody we judge people's weakness according to what we believe is our strength when what we've imagined is our strength is secretly our weakness because it brings about judgment of everyone and everything all the time i always reach a point in a talk where i'm bringing an end to it where i want to say what cannot be said though i've been trying for almost 50 years is that within each and every one of us there is something that is pure that is innocent and timeless and so pure and innocent and timeless is this living light that it cannot condemn even though it doesn't have to agree to be for us we believe unless everyone and everything is in agreement with ourselves as we've imagined ourselves as being loving kind and strong that that person has missed the mark failing to see that the very imagination of what loving kind and true is creates for ourselves this endless process of judging people and then blaming them for the pain of our own nature in conflict with itself to be still is to align with a peace that already exists not to create it to be still is to enter into a wisdom that is all pervasive that you don't have to call on but rather sits there with you at all times and bringing about the calm of understanding there is an action that doesn't require negativity doesn't require pain to be still is to understand that you are already part of a divine order and that stillness is is profitable it is beyond imagination and why is it beyond imagination because it frees us it frees us from the need to imagine peace at all it is the peace we seek so if you can or if you want go back and look at these three special exercises and remember that where they began they began with realizing that we need a new kind of effort in every moment it must be when christ said i go before you to make the crooked places straight what do you think he was talking about he was saying already within you is this light already within you is the stillness that cannot and will not contradict itself let alone try and make someone a captive of some imagined demand that belongs to an imagined self and now the last part of this talk you must not imagine that this stillness that we're talking about here is some kind of beauty because the minute that you imagine that this stillness is beauty as imagined then what you see in that stillness will trouble you endlessly be you perfect as your father in heaven who maketh the sun who maketh this stillness who maketh this light to shine on good and evil alike you will know that you're understanding something of this stillness when you can see in yourself this endless disturbance these dark waters constantly bubbling up anytime someone stirs them slightly and you'll sit there and you'll be the witness not the witness of stillness but you'll be the stillness that witnesses everything coming into it and departing transferred and transformed as it is by that light that it has come into and that lives in order to change not the conditions but the consciousness that keeps seeing things the way it does through this disturbed nature i hope you'll work with these ideas the reward the reward is the end of effort as you know it which means the reward is the end of struggling as the path to pursuit what you believe it is to be a profitable human being the divine made you there's nothing more profitable and perfect than what has created you you must find that out for yourself we must do our own work
