Transcript
Before we get started with looking into and working with the first of these seven practices,
Which is entitled,
Welcome Every Revelation,
There is a little revelation I want to cover with you before we get into it.
This is true for every one of these practices and even more true when it comes to you and I fulfilling the purpose of our life on this earth.
These practices that we're going to look at together are just one angle,
One view,
Really one possibility out of an infinite number of promising discoveries that you can make.
And that's why I want to make this clear at the outset.
You need to take these practices and make them your own.
Don't just listen and follow.
Freedom β the kind that comes with learning to welcome every revelation as we're about to discover β is intimately connected with you using your own experience to validate the truths that you're hearing so that through that relationship and those revelations you realize that you are already connected to another order of consciousness,
Another level of being really,
That these exercises are designed to help us awaken but more importantly that show us they already are awaiting us within us.
So please remember that.
I'll remind you from time to time through this series of talks.
The key lesson for this first practice,
Which is again Welcome Every Revelation,
Goes as follows.
The less afraid we become of seeing and realizing the depth and breadth of our human imperfections,
The nearer we are to being spiritually perfectly fearless.
Take a nice deep breath because I want to start out with a very important idea and it's one that I would urge you to ponder as deeply as you can so that you can start to mind the freedom that is hidden within it.
When it comes to discovering the truth about ourselves,
There is no such thing as a bad fact.
I'm going to say it again.
It cannot be overemphasized.
There is no such thing as a bad fact when it comes to those of us who want to be free.
I can say it in other words.
We must learn to welcome the light that alone can reveal whatever it may be that remains in the still dark unconscious parts of our present level of consciousness.
With this one idea in mind,
A key idea that's going to run through all of our work,
All of the exercises,
Is something that I strongly suspect most of us have never even considered as being true,
But I assure you it is required.
A required realization for any and all who would learn the truth that helps set them free.
There is no possibility of realizing our highest possibilities without agreeing to become conscious of what stands in the way of that manifestation.
In other words,
Any refusal on our part to discover some limitation in our present level of consciousness is literally the same as refusing the invitation to transcend and outgrow it.
Actually understood properly,
Every revelation that we have about ourselves,
About the world we're in,
The relationships we have,
If they're received without resistance,
They are an invitation to enter into another level of our self that understands resisting any revelation is an act of futility.
Because the revelation isn't there to cause us some kind of pain or problem,
It's actually there to help us release the level of consciousness with all of its identification that's responsible for all of the pain that we meet every day in our life.
This is why we have to learn to welcome every revelation about ourselves,
Including that rare understanding,
And this is one that most of us tend to resist,
That somehow or other those moments that challenge an image or an idea we have about ourselves is that that moment,
That revelation,
That unfolding that we look out and see as something coming to steal our freedom,
It's in our favor.
Imagine living from a world within yourself,
An understanding that looks out and understands those moments when suddenly you're beset by some kind of anxiety or inadequacy or whatever it may be that visits and so often victimizes us,
Then in those same moments that we now try to run from lives the realization that who and what we are,
Our highest spiritual possibility is realized by recognizing that none of that activity,
None of what we see about ourself in that moment is actually ourself at all.
And once we learn to see the truth of that,
I can tell you we're on our way to looking at every moment as a kind of doorway into literally a divine relationship with the world that keeps helping us fulfill our possibilities instead of standing in their way.
Look,
Let's look at this same idea in another way.
This is pretty simple.
It's self-explanatory.
Whatever remains concealed within us can't be healed in us.
That is until it is brought into a new kind of awareness that doesn't just embrace stormy moments that we want to escape,
But that actually welcomes them for all the new self-discoveries that they help make possible.
So that instead of being the unwitting instrument of some useless negative reaction to an unwanted moment as it often happens,
We learn to use that moment and that reaction for the purpose that it's been given to us.
That's right,
Given to us.
But in order for us to receive the gift of that,
As we talked about in the opening of this set of practices,
We have to learn to change the world we see by seeing it in a different way as follows.
I have a little story to introduce this special idea.
Imagine you're on a schooner,
A ship,
Sailing ship of some kind,
And there's a small crew,
Let's say half a dozen people.
And in this crew,
As is always true with any crew of people working together,
There's an order to things.
And just underneath the captain,
If you will,
Is the first mate.
Now the first mate wants to become captain.
In case you're not following the story,
There is a part of us that wants to be the captain of our own life.
But when we need the captain,
We don't have a captain,
We usually find ourselves capsized,
Because we're listening to some part of us that doesn't know what to do with what we just saw.
So here's the captain,
Here's the mate,
Captain's at the steering at the helm.
And the first mate says,
Do you mind if I ask you a question?
The captain says,
No,
What's that?
He says,
Well,
I want you to know I'm not flattering you,
But I admire how calm and collected you are.
I mean,
Here we are,
We're out on the deck,
Even as I'm speaking,
The winds are starting to shift,
The waves are rising.
But no matter what,
You seem to be calm,
Collected,
As if there's no problem when honestly,
I get afraid sometimes of how tempest these seas can become.
Captain says,
Yeah,
That's okay,
I don't mind you saying that.
Well,
He says,
The mate says,
But I don't understand,
It doesn't matter to you whether the winds blow hot or cold from the east,
From the west,
Whether there's a gale or the winds die and we're sitting in some kind of zone with nowhere to go,
No matter what,
You're the same,
What's your secret?
The captain looks at him and smiles and he says,
Well,
I'll tell you,
But you'll have to see this for yourself.
What?
Said the first mate.
Captain says,
I've learned to be grateful for every kind of weather.
I'm the first mate not understanding that at all.
I said,
Well,
How can that be?
The captain said,
Look,
I've learned that whether the winds are in my face or at my back,
Whether time and tide is for or against my chosen course of the moment,
Each and every one of those conditions shows me something new about myself,
Not just about the waters,
But about my relationship to them and how every last one of those moments is an introduction to something that I can use the next time a moment like that comes around.
And that,
He said,
Is why I am calm,
Collected,
Because I'm conscious of what the moment is revealing to me about myself.
And if you have that,
Said the captain,
Looking at the first mate,
You have everything.
Now what if you knew that concealed in every unwanted moment was the revelation of some new and higher spiritual possibility that moments before you couldn't have even suspected existed,
And yet now you start to understand that without that condition that ordinarily we resist,
We would never have the opportunity to see where it is within us that a summary reaction to a revelation actually creates the storm instead of helping us transcend it.
And this is outward or inward.
So our practice,
Your practice if you will,
Is as much and often as it is possible for you to do to welcome every revelation by agreeing to see all that it shows you about yourself.
And this is something that can only be done,
Honestly,
If you also agree to silently witness and suspend every thought,
Any negative reaction or judgment about that same moment.
That's the same as standing in the middle of that moment and understanding that the moment,
Just like the ocean that holds the ship above its waters,
Is intended to consistently lift you above yourself if you will welcome what that moment brings you to see about yourself.
Our second and next practice that we're about to come to is going to help you better understand this kind of silent seeing that really does set the stage for you realizing your highest spiritual possibilities.
See you in a bit.

What a profound teaching! All that arises within my experience awakens in me an opportunity to connect more and more deeply with my wisest and most compassionate self! I once heard a Buddhist teacher say, "accept everything, push away nothing." Seems aligned with this talk. Thank you, Guy! Seeds are being planted.
