Today I will tell a Zen story about a student who seeks wisdom from a Zen master about how to become enlightened. Our experiences may not first be as we think they are, but if we are attentive to life we can learn and improve.

Once upon a time,

There was a wise old Zen Master,

Who lived in a small village.

He was well known throughout the land for his great wisdom and deep understanding of the universe.

One day a young man came to the Zen Master and asked him,

Master,

I have heard so much about your wisdom and enlightenment.

Please teach me the way to true happiness and inner peace.

The Zen Master replied,

I will teach you,

But first you must prove me that you are worthy and ready for such knowledge.

The young man was eager to learn and asked,

Master,

How can I prove to you that I am ready?

The Zen Master answered,

You must carry this stone up to the top of the mountain and back down again.

If you can do this without dropping it or resting,

Then I will know that you are ready to receive my teachings.

The young man accepted the challenge and set off up the mountain with the heavy stone in his arms.

He struggled and stumbled along the way,

But he never let go of the stone.

After many hours of hard climbing,

The young man finally reached the top of the mountain.

He was exhausted and his arms and legs ached,

But he felt a great sense of accomplishment.

As he began his descent,

He suddenly stumbled and dropped the stone.

He tumbled down the mountain and the young man watched helplessly as it rolled out of sight.

He felt defeated.

The young man returned to the Zen Master and apologized for failing the test.

But the Zen Master simply smiled and said,

You have learned a valuable lesson.

The stone represented the burden of your past and the weight you carry with you every day.

The mountain represented the challenges you face in your life,

And your journey up the mountain represented the struggles you will encounter on your path to enlightenment.

The young man nodded,

Understanding the Zen Master's message.

And what about dropping the stone,

He asked.

The Zen Master replied,

Dropping the stone symbolizes letting go of your burdens and attachments and embracing the present moment.

Only then can you truly find inner peace and happiness.

The young man thanked the Zen Master and left,

Feeling enlightened and inspired to continue his journey.
