Carrying The Stone - Zen Story

Today I will tell a Zen story about a student who seeks wisdom from a Zen master about how to become enlightened. Our experiences may not first be as we think they are, but if we are attentive to life we can learn and improve.

I’m struck by rhe realization that I expend much of my energy deliberating how, when, where, and why I dropped the stone that I overlook/fail to appreciate the benefit of the lightened load. In the story, the student apologized for dropping the stone, as though acknowledging the moment as one of defeat. It’s possible that THAT might be one of the greatest obstacles to enlightenment: the tendency to perceive the action of “dropping” something as a negative instead of a positive - .or even a simple neutral - action. 🤔
