Welcome to Life,

Lessons,

And Laughter with your host Glenn Ambrose.

Hello welcome to the show.

Today we are talking about accountability.

Accounta.

.

.

No one just popped into my head.

My friend Carrie Cudmore,

I should have her on the show sometime.

She has a program where she groups people up and she calls them accountability buddies.

Accountability buddies.

Yeah isn't that awesome?

That's very cool.

That's a lot of these.

So you are accountable to somebody.

So that's what we are talking about today.

So yeah basically we are talking about being accountable and a lot of the obvious examples would be like having a personal trainer to be accountable,

Having a life coach to be accountable to,

Things like that.

It makes a huge difference.

I actually read an article probably about 5 or 6 years ago that said that the success of people on weight loss programs shoots up,

I believe it was something like around 80% higher when they have somebody to be accountable to.

It was.

.

.

That's crazy.

Yeah.

The number was dramatic.

It went from something like 15 to 95% or something like that or maybe it shot up 70%.

Maybe it was like 15% success rate to 80% success rate or somewhere in there.

But it was dramatic and it had been tested.

Well everything has been studied and tested at this point.

And they said just having somebody being accountable makes that dramatic a difference.

So it's a huge deal.

You really used to preach accountability.

I just bit my tongue.

That's awesome.

This is live folks.

You really used to preach accountability to me when we were personal training a long time ago with the food logs and literally just showing up.

I think one of the first things that you said to me was like,

You have to show up for me.

I'm doing this for you.

You have to be here for me.

So you have to come every day,

Twice a week.

You have to come at this time.

You have to do your part.

And just knowing that you expected me there made me get up and go because it was rough at first.

Yeah.

And I mean when I like,

My God,

25 years ago or maybe longer,

When I first started personal training,

I used to have to sell my own personal training,

Which was not my forte.

But one of the things that I used to tell people,

Which was true,

Is I said that you're going to show up for an appointment with me before you show up for an appointment with yourself.

And it's true.

Most people will do that.

If they're going to go to the gym and they go,

Because they don't view it that way,

It's easy to,

You're you,

So it's easy to just change your mind and not be accountable to yourself.

And it's harder to say to not do that with somebody else.

And that's one of the things that we really,

If we change the way we look at it,

We can make strides on being accountable to ourselves.

It's obviously not as easy as being accountable to somebody else because there's more moving parts.

There's more emotion.

There's more rationalization when you're just being accountable to yourself.

But it doesn't mean that we can't make strides in it.

And one of the things that we need to make strides in that area is to change the way we look at it.

Take it seriously.

If you say,

I'm going to do something,

Like I'm going to work out twice next week,

Then you have to make a promise to yourself.

You can't just say,

Well,

I'm going to work out twice next week and then not think any more about it.

What does that mean?

Do you respect yourself?

If you're saying,

Are you making a promise to yourself?

Those are the ways we need to look at it.

We need to look at it and we have to go,

Okay,

Would I lie to somebody that I respect?

No.

Okay,

Well,

I want to respect myself,

So I need to start treating myself with respect.

If I make a promise to myself,

I need to keep it as if I would make a promise to anybody else.

So then you say,

I'm promising myself that I'm going to the gym for the next two days.

I'm giving myself my word out of honesty,

Truth,

And respect that I'm going to be there and I will not let myself down.

You start talking to yourself like that,

All of a sudden you start taking these decisions a little bit more seriously.

And every time you're accountable to yourself and you actually do what you said you were going to do,

Your self-esteem rises too.

Because you just showed yourself respect.

Yeah,

If you hold yourself accountable and you follow through on whatever it is that you set out to do,

You start feeling better about yourself,

Especially when you haven't,

When you haven't followed through and then you do follow through,

It feels amazing.

All of a sudden your chin goes up,

Your shoulders come back,

You start walking a little taller,

You start feeling a little bit pride in yourself.

Yeah,

It's nice.

I just looked right now.

I'm currently on,

I started using the MyFitnessPal app,

Which you can log your food and your exercise and it gives you like your nutrition facts and a daily goal and stuff.

It's a lot like the Anytime Fitness app that I used to use.

And I just logged in and looked.

I'm at a streak right now for 14 days straight.

Which is not a long time.

That is.

14 days is a long time.

But as the person who never received my food logs,

I think that you know that that's a huge achievement for me.

Yeah,

That's a good point.

In this day and age,

There's an app for that.

Some of the most effective apps out there that people use and have noted differences in their lives is accountability apps.

They have all types of different accountability apps.

And it's most of the time we don't,

Accountability works because,

Well for a few different reasons,

But one of them is most of the time we're walking around so unconsciously we have no idea what the hell we're doing.

We're just kind of living through habit and all this stuff.

And when you're accountable and you have to write everything in a food log.

I always had clients do that.

Even clients that,

One good example is I had this guy who was in his,

At the time he was probably in his early 40s.

He had been working out for a long time.

He was in phenomenal shape.

He was highly intelligent.

He knew all kinds about nutrition and diet and he ate very strictly and everything.

And he comes up to me one day and he goes,

I just can't,

I hit a wall.

I just can't lose like this last like seven pounds that I really want to get to this goal.

I just can't get there.

And I'm doing this and I'm doing that and I'm doing this.

And he told me all the things that he was doing right.

And now this was not one of my clients.

He was just a guy I knew from the gym.

And I said,

Well,

What you should do is keep a food log like one online that actually,

You know,

Not just writing down,

But you input it and it tells you percentages of what you're eating and where it should be.

And I said,

You'll probably find something in there that you're just not aware of.

And he's like,

Yeah,

But I know,

You know what I know about nutrition and all this.

I go,

I understand that.

But the fact is,

Is something's off,

You know,

And you don't know what it is.

So something's got to be off.

If you would,

I know you think you're doing everything right,

But there's something that you're not seeing that is off and this can help you see it.

And he did that and like a week later,

He's like,

You're a genius.

He was so excited because he had already in a week,

Like he'd,

He'd already figured it out.

He was taking,

There was certain areas in his diet that had carbs in it that he didn't even know had carbs and what it was doing was throwing his intake off.

And that was his block.

And as soon as he cleared that block,

He,

He hit his goal.

And it's,

You know,

Like it's not that,

You know,

I didn't have the information.

I didn't know what he was missing,

But I knew that there was a piece.

So monitor it,

You know,

And that's what accountability can do.

And diet is a really good example of that.

But it's the same thing in our lives.

I do it with,

With life coaching too.

If there's a certain area that somebody wants to work on in their lives,

I'll have them take an activity log.

I mean,

Sometimes I'll have people list,

Like sometimes I do it with finances.

Oftentimes I have people do it with finances,

You know,

Write down every penny you spend,

Make a list of all the money coming in,

All the money going out and you know,

Subtract it and we'll look at it or most of the time I don't even need to look at it.

That's the funny thing with activity logs and food logs and different types of logs.

I don't even need and a lot of times finances,

People are kind of close to the chest with them.

So I tell them I don't even need to see it.

This is just for your own use because once you write everything down and you have the information in front of you,

You'll make the adjustments,

You know,

And it was the same with food logs.

I didn't have to tell people what to do.

People know what to do.

They just didn't,

They weren't completely aware that they weren't doing it,

You know.

So when you just write,

Keep track of things and put it down on a piece of paper,

All of a sudden you go,

Oh my God,

And these are,

I can't tell you how many times I've gone through this exercise where people said,

Yes,

I know everything that I eat though,

Or I know how often I work out,

Or I know where my money is going,

Or I know how many times a day I do this,

Or I know.

Everybody thinks that they know exactly what they're doing and we live way too unconsciously for us to be aware of everything that we're doing.

You know,

I mean,

I still run around unconsciously sometimes and all of a sudden it's like,

I did that again?

You know,

What the heck am I doing?

I was trying to stop that.

It's like just be,

So bringing that accountability in of keeping track and writing things down is huge.

So another thing that I started to do because of this whole idea of accountability is,

I don't think that we've ever talked about this.

I think we've talked about the five minute journal in the morning before,

You and I.

Do you remember that?

It sounds familiar.

It's like the five minute journal is like,

It's a list of threes.

You can buy a journal that has it all mapped out for you or you can just find the template and write it out yourself.

But it's like goals for the day,

Goals for the month,

Goals for the year,

Gratitude,

Three things that you're grateful for,

Three things that would make today a really great day.

That's phenomenal.

And then later in the day,

Before you go to bed,

You fill in three things that happened today that made today great.

And I was trying that and I actually,

This notebook that I've been taking notes in all day for meetings and for the podcast and stuff was originally the five minute journal notebook that I had started and it had like three entries in it.

But I started doing earlier this week,

I started doing something called morning pages.

Have you ever heard of the?

I've heard of them.

Yeah.

It's basically you write three pages when you first wake up in the morning of stream of consciousness,

Whatever it is like that you're thinking about that day,

Your to do list,

Your worries,

Something from yesterday that you need to get off your chest,

Your goals,

Anything,

Whatever comes to your mind.

Like the first thing that before you grab your phone,

Before you look at,

Check your email.

That's awesome.

You know,

Just writing a stream of consciousness and the accountability that has been awesome is I date the top of the pages.

Yeah.

And so then I have the back of the last page every time is empty.

And at night I write the to do list for the next day.

Yeah.

And at the end of the day,

I check them off.

So I make sure that I did them and then,

But it's dated and the next day I want the date to be in line with it.

So like I've set up this accountability thing for myself,

Which hopefully it stays where like I don't want to miss a day.

So I date everything so that I know I'm,

You know,

I know if I miss a day.

Yeah.

Right.

And I'll,

And I can look back at it and I don't want to look back at what I wrote,

But I just want to look at,

You know,

Did I,

Did I do it?

Did I actually do it?

Did I keep my promise to myself?

Right.

And those are the little things,

You know,

Like there's gratitude journals,

The five minute thing,

The streaming morning pages,

The,

Um,

Like it's,

It's endless.

The different things that are out there and they've been out there for years and years and years and is,

You know,

All this,

These little things to keep us accountable and to bring some focus and attention to our lives.

You know,

That's,

That's where that's how we change habits by living on purpose.

You know,

It's like oftentimes I'll teach all different things and stuff,

But I tell people like you want to change your entire life.

Just live consciously because we don't do things that don't make sense.

If we're in the present moment,

If we're actually thinking about what we're doing,

If we're conscious,

Not even,

I shouldn't say thinking,

If we are conscious about what we were doing,

If we're in the present moment and we're aware of where we are and what we're doing and why we're doing it,

We don't do stupid things.

We just don't.

Why would we?

Why would we possibly do something stupid if we're aware that we're doing something stupid?

If we're aware,

We wouldn't do it because we'd be like,

Well,

That's stupid.

Why would I do that?

You know,

We do stupid things because we're not aware of what we're doing because we're habitual.

We haven't put any thought into it and we just go and it's,

You know,

That these types of exercises and working with people like life coaches and having accountability,

You know,

In your life or something,

Anything that you can do.

If you want your life to change,

You have to put effort into changing it.

So do something differently.

And you know,

The things that you mentioned with these journals and things,

They were five minutes.

You know,

Like,

I mean,

You can literally take five minutes out of your day in the morning and five minutes out of your day in the evening and it can change your life.

Ten minutes a day can literally change your life if it's focused,

You know.

It's our energy and our minds and our thoughts and our actions are sprayed like a flashlight with light just going everywhere,

You know,

And our energy is just sprayed everywhere going in 90 million different directions.

And if we just focus our energies and what we're doing and bring some thought into it,

It just harnesses that light and focuses it and then it's like a laser beam and it's 10 times more powerful.

It's 100 times more powerful.

You know,

We get so much done.

That's why that one of my favorite quotes is Zig Ziglar who says,

Which is ironic because I teach spirituality usually and he's a success guy,

You know,

But a lot of their stuff is the same.

And he says,

Lack of focus,

What is it?

Something like,

I haven't said this one in a while.

Lack of focus,

Not lack of time is the problem.

We all have 24-hour days,

You know,

And it's true.

We all have 24-hour days and yet there are some people that are changing their lives and some people who are really successful in whatever area that they want to be successful in and some people are really happy and then some people aren't.

And the people who aren't,

They don't really look at the ones who have what they want too clearly.

They just kind of wipe it off.

They go,

Well,

They're lucky or they're born with a silver spoon in their mouth or they're just,

Oh,

That couldn't happen for me.

And they just kind of wipe it off because then they don't have to be accountable and they can just kind of maintain rolling around and,

You know,

Just not having any focus to their life.

But those people have 24-hour days,

You know.

It's like oftentimes I look at it in the financial world,

You know,

Like you have all these people that are really rich and then you have people struggling for money.

Most times the people who are struggling for money are working 10 times harder than the rich people.

So it's not lack of time that is the problem,

You know,

Because the rich people are making 100 times more money than you but yet they're hanging out golfing and they're working half the time,

You know.

And then you're over here working,

You know,

14-hour days and you go,

Well,

There's not enough time.

It's because somebody that is making a lot of money does not limit their mind to believing that they make a certain amount of money per hour and then they multiply it times the hours that they can work per week and then that's what they're going to earn that week.

They don't think like that.

That's not how their mind works,

You know.

They've expanded beyond that and so they live by different rules than that,

You know.

So it's not about having,

We don't need more time.

We need more focused energy.

We need to live on purpose,

You know.

We need to be accountable to ourselves and,

You know,

Often,

I mean,

Heck,

That's part of the reason why I have a job,

You know,

Because people have a hard time.

It is harder being accountable to yourself.

I think a lot of this show we really talked about how you can be accountable to yourself which is wonderful.

I mean,

I want to help people do that.

I want to teach people to be successful in their own lives and empower them to put their future in their own hands and all that stuff.

But the thing that I used to see,

Again,

Personal training oftentimes is I used to tell people,

You know,

Hooray to you for hiring a personal trainer because do you know how many people are sitting on their couch right now going,

I should be able to do it myself.

I shouldn't have to hire a trainer.

I should,

Should,

Shouldn't,

Shouldn't,

Should and they should themselves right onto the couch and they never get in shape and they get sick and all this type of stuff because they think they should be able to do it themselves.

It doesn't matter if you should be able to do it yourself or if you shouldn't be able to do it yourself.

It doesn't matter.

The fact is,

Is you're not doing it yourself.

That's all that matters.

So find a way to do it,

You know,

And if that means going out and hiring a personal trainer,

Then go hire one.

If that means hire a dietician or a life coach,

Then go hire one,

But don't make excuses why you can't do it.

Okay.

So Glenn,

Yes,

That's me.

I am,

I want real world implications from you right now.

I am sitting on a,

Well,

It's a chair.

I have tried and failed.

I can attest to this.

He's sitting in a chair.

I can attest to this,

He has failed many times horribly.

I have tried and failed,

Right?

Yes.

I am now ready to take responsibility for myself and my own life.

In what ways can I add accountability to my life today?

For doing what?

For losing weight,

For becoming happier.

Pick one.

Okay.

So it's,

Well,

For being happier,

I think you already started it with those morning pages,

You know,

And the thing that I like about those morning pages too is you have an at night thing too.

You know,

That's,

I did,

I did that.

I don't think that that's a part of what most people do with morning pages,

But I try to make a to do list.

Right.

And that's exactly,

And that's why I kind of mentioned it separately is I like that part of it because,

You know,

Looking back over your day in the nighttime is very important.

And it's like I had a paper,

A form that I did and I went over my day and I'd filled out that paper either by hand or online for I believe five or six years straight.

And I pro over those five or six years,

I probably missed about maybe 45 days out of like five,

Five or six years.

So I mean,

I did that constantly and it was a huge help.

So I think that that helps bring that accountability so you can,

You know,

As far as the happiness that,

You know,

Living on purpose,

Setting your priorities up.

What are my priorities?

You know,

And then actually living like that because most people,

You know,

And that doesn't mean that like if your priorities are your family,

That doesn't mean that you have to quit your job and spend exactly eight hours per day with your family because they're your number one priority and then work is third priority.

So you spend three hours per day working.

That's not what I mean.

You know,

I understand that we still have to go to work,

You know,

Some people eight,

Ten hours a day.

So it's just what else are you doing?

You know,

Are you,

Are you being conscious with your time?

If you say that that your family is a priority in your life,

Then are you spending,

Are you acting like that?

Are you,

One,

Are you spending time with them?

And two,

When you're there,

Are you actually with them or are you thinking about other things?

You know?

Um,

Okay.

So that would,

That would give me more focus and yeah,

Prioritizing,

Prioritizing your life and then having some sort of habit that you can be accountable to it in the morning and the evening.

Now I'd like to lose weight,

Lose weight.

Now I need,

How do I set myself up for being accountable?

Well,

That app to,

To monitor what you're eating,

Those,

Those apps are great because what it does is it,

It actually,

You know,

Tells you where you're wrong.

You know what I mean?

Like if you're actually putting in everything and it says,

Okay,

You're taking in,

You're supposed to be taking in this many calories and you're taking in this,

Or you're supposed to only take in this percentage of carbs and you're taking in this.

Whatever it gives you that information.

So you know,

The,

The nutrition is one part of it.

Working out,

That's another part of it.

So be,

Do what works.

This is,

That's the most important thing.

Do whatever works.

So if you can sit down and you can make a promise with yourself that I am going to work out,

Um,

And you can start small too.

I'm going to work out twice a week.

Okay.

Then,

Then you work twice a week.

Then maybe after a couple of weeks or a few weeks,

You can get that up to three times a week.

Cool.

You know,

You can still take baby steps,

But do what works.

And if you make a promise to yourself that I'm going to work out two days a week or three days a week,

Whatever that promise is,

And you don't do it,

Then what you need to do is do whatever it takes to do it.

Go hire a,

A personal trainer.

You know,

And if,

If you can only afford to see that person once a week,

Then see that person once a week,

You know,

I've heard people,

People talk about,

Um,

Like,

Uh,

This is probably bad,

But like even like making a small,

Like between friends,

Um,

Like even if people were to make like a small friendly wager,

Like,

All right,

We both,

We,

We both have our starting weight for this or starting like body mass index for like the beginning of this month.

By the end of this month or by the end of like two months or whatever,

Whoever's lost the most,

Uh,

Wins the bet.

And it's like a dinner or like something fun for the both of you that you'll both enjoy.

Right.

And,

Um,

But you don't,

But like there's this accountability now that like you'll have a,

There's an impact.

Yeah.

If you want to make it a fun competition,

You know,

Like,

Like somebody like that,

You know,

You,

The,

The biggest,

That's why I kind of said the most important thing is you do what works.

Yeah.

You know,

And you don't stop trying until you find something that works.

It's it's just,

You know,

Maybe some people are going to thrive in that situation.

They're going to get a,

They're going to get a kick out of the competition aspect of it and stuff and,

And they'll do well.

Other people are just going to be like,

You know what?

I don't really care.

And that's not what motivates them.

So do something else.

What about something like smoking?

Like I want to quit smoking,

Make a plan,

You know,

That you got to be accountable.

Like I smoked years ago and the way I quit,

I was just talking about this with somebody like a lot of times we generalize,

We generalize it.

We go,

Oh no,

I have to quit cold Turkey.

Why?

Well,

I have to be quit like a month from now.

Yeah.

So is there a difference if you quit tomorrow or if it takes you seven days to quit?

Well,

No,

I guess not.

Okay.

Well then you don't have to quit cold Turkey.

You have other options.

You know,

Like this is what I mean by bringing thought and clarity into what you're doing.

You know,

Really like stuff like that makes sense in our mind.

That's why having somebody to talk to is so helpful.

This is like,

I mean,

I,

I,

I'm a life coach.

I still do it in my own head.

This is why I work with a life coach and I talk things out to my life coach and other people in my life because stuff inside of our head actually makes sense when to us when it's really doesn't make sense.

So when we say it out loud,

All of a sudden it's like,

Okay,

Wait a minute here.

That doesn't make sense.

So make a plan,

You know,

Like quitting smoking.

Like the way I did it is I used the gum to quit smoking.

Most people just use the gum to lean on,

You know,

It's one crutch for another.

But I,

I was like,

I saw somebody get addicted to the gum and I was like,

I don't want to be that person.

So I said,

I'm not doing that.

So I said,

Okay,

Well I'm going to chew whenever I really need a cigarette,

I'm going to chew a piece of gum and I'm going to see how many I chew.

So I did that and it was,

I forgot it was,

This was many years ago,

But like,

Let's say it was,

Um,

I chewed eight pieces of gum that first day.

Then I went home and I got a piece of paper and I said,

Well,

I should be able to drop down a piece of gum every day or every two days.

Okay.

So so then I said,

But so I'm going to have eight pieces,

Eight pieces,

Seven pieces,

Seven pieces,

Six pieces,

Six pieces,

Five,

Five.

And I wrote that down on a piece of paper,

But I also said,

Well,

What if I could drop more than one in one day?

And I said,

Well,

That's cool too.

I'll leave some room.

So I don't have,

If I don't need seven and I can get away with having six,

Then I'll have six.

And that's what I did.

And I quit in like a week.

You know,

I had a plan for like 10 or 14 days or something and I was able to do it slightly quicker.

But I weaned myself off because I had a plan and I made that promise.

I took it seriously and I stuck to it,

You know,

And that's how I quit.

And I don't think it's like,

I think I had the,

I think it worked because I had the pieces,

Not because I'm special.

Right.

Yes.

I had the pieces where one,

I had made the promise to myself and I was serious.

And quite honestly,

Having faith helped with that because it was times when you have,

You have major mood swings when you quit.

You know,

And the fact that I had faith and I could be like this,

This too shall pass,

You know,

I know it's not going to be like this forever.

And to know that I was going to have mood swings and,

And,

And to be able to breathe and talk myself out of it,

That was helpful.

I had a plan,

I was,

I respected myself enough to be accountable and it was written down and I stuck to it,

You know,

And,

And it worked.

So you know,

That's not going to work for everybody,

But that's just an example of how,

You know,

If,

If you,

If you respect yourself enough and you can,

And you really design a specific plan and you make that promise to yourself,

You take it seriously and then you follow it through,

We'd be surprised if we bring consciousness into what we're doing.

We actually,

And I believe writing it down is a big step towards that.

It makes it real.

Write it down,

Have consciousness,

Have a plan,

Make a commitment to sticking through that and making it small,

Easy baby steps that aren't too overwhelming.

If we do things in life like that,

We would be shocked at how much we,

We are actually able to accomplish.

Well said.

And if people want help or accountability,

Someone to be accountable to,

Yeah,

Where can they find you?

They can find me at Glen Ambrose.

Com Glenwood two ends.

So yeah,

The,

And again,

The most important thing out of anything that I said is do whatever works.

If you're struggling with this type of stuff,

Hire somebody to help you.

This is your life.

You know,

We'll change the oil in our car.

We'll,

You know,

We'll,

We'll go out for ice cream.

We'll go out for dinner.

We'll buy our kids the $300 pair of cleats or whatever.

But when do we actually prioritize our life?

You know,

So prioritize your life.

And if you need to hire a life coach for a while to develop some good habits,

Then do that.

You know,

But there is help out there for us,

For all of us,

For whatever we want to accomplish.

So go get that help.

That's why life coaching is becoming so popular.

Why?

Because it works.

Life coaching gets more and more and more popular and grows and grows and grows if nobody's getting anything out of it.

You know,

So it's working.

People are seeing the results.

That's why more people are doing it.

So go out there,

Hire a life coach.

You can find me at Glenambrose.

Com or just use the things that I mentioned earlier about taking the accountability for yourself.

If you can do it yourself,

Great.

If you need some help,

Get it.

So that's going to wrap up our accountability.

Thanks for sharing with me,

Ben.

You're welcome.

Thanks for recording,

Dave.

Chacumbra from Dave.

Okay.

All right.

We'll talk at you soon.

Well done as always. I’m learning the difference between forcing myself to do things and following through on mindful commitments to myself, and this really helps. I also liked Ben’s strategy with the night pages to-do lists. Thank you so much!! πŸ™πŸ»β€οΈπŸ˜Š

I love the piece about how just 10 minutes can literally change our lives. Energy left unchecked is like a light scattered everywhere. 10 minutes of daily focus brings in that energy and turns it into a laser. Love that!

Glenn with 2nn’s, love it! My youngest son is also a Glenn and he makes it clear that the only real Glenn’s in this world are those with 2 nn’s, lol!!! I’ve been listening to you and Ben for close to a year and love your talks. In this talk I did disagree somewhat in your comparison between the wealthy person working less and having the time to golf and the 14 hr. a day worker (I believe that was the figure) not having as much time. Yes, we all have 24 hrs. in each day, but...the wealthy person can also afford to hire a cook, a house cleaner, a gardener, etc...freeing themselves up to have time for that round of golf while the lower wage earner working more hours is probably not in a financial position to hire outside help to have the free time luxuries of the wealthy
