First Inner Treasure Sama Moves Mind Within
by Girish Jha,
The half the journey becomes complete when we become a seeker. It is important to know the principles as taught by great masters. Learning the principles - I do not know, let me know it. Clarity and conviction - I do not understand it; let me understand it.

You know,
How to apply SAMHA.
In daily life,
One of the six mental treasures.
You see that when we have a right knowledge,
Right behavior,
Living with the six treasures,
We become a seeker and the seeker always succeeds.
This is the most important step in the journey of the self-discovery or succeeding in meditation.
But here,
Our masters says that the right knowledge should be done by discernment because discernment,
Viveka,
Gives us understanding,
Gives us the clarity.
So if clarity is not there,
So that very clarity starts pulling the mind on the path of Shreyas.
You see that these words now it should become your vocabulary in daily life.
So what is Shreyas?
Shreyas means what is right and good.
Then what is right and good?
The right never changes.
It is independent.
And what is that right is my real self.
So if we join those dots in the intellect,
That intellect remains free from delusion,
Ignorance.
An example,
The steven is looking like this.
Now the mind changes its behavior.
Why he is looking like this?
Why he has this?
You see that?
So there is no discernment here.
That is one example,
Simple,
That happens in our daily life.
Now see that for a moment,
Now we all are seekers,
For a while,
Just for a minute,
Remove discernment,
Remove dispassion,
And also remove six treasures from life.
What is left?
Think of it.
What is left?
The mind says we are created by the matter,
That's why we are body,
And we will dissolve into the same matter.
Birth and the death are the effects.
So what will happen to the mind now?
Now see the behavior of the mind.
The behavior of the mind will focus on eat,
Drink,
And be married.
Think of this,
Because I will search,
Find everything with reference to the matter,
Because I am matter.
More wealth,
Egoistic life,
Less wealth,
Depression,
Duality in a conflict and a problem.
Think of this.
So when you think like this,
The intellect says this is what the life is.
Pleasure seeking life,
Postpone the aging process.
I will die today,
So let me postpone.
I will die after 10 years.
What I will be doing for 10 years,
The same suffering,
Same pain,
Same problem,
Same conflict.
So that is why I want to extend my life.
We do not think in this way.
That is why to become a seeker we use this discernment,
Dispassion,
Six treasures.
I understand.
No,
I cannot pay you so much.
Okay.
So go to the gas station and tell the person I cannot pay you fill the gas.
Go to the restaurant.
There we have a right logic.
So that mind is totally obsessed with the matter.
So we are lost and mind starts working on us.
World influences us at every point.
Do you see that fact?
You go to the workplace,
You live in the family with the family members.
Oh,
I lost this money.
I gained this money.
The mind is 24 by 7,
Busy in the matter.
That is the reason of my sorrow and the suffering.
I am different from the matter.
So becoming a seeker gives you the clarity that I am not,
This car belongs to me,
But I do not belong to the car.
That is the higher level of discernment.
Think of it.
Think of it.
So when you think of it,
Then we start with becoming a seeker.
And when we become a seeker,
Seeker never fails.
Seeker endures in peace and calmness.
That seeker lives the life with a focus on the real self.
Because I cannot accept to be unhappy.
And I have realized that this unhappiness comes because I treat myself as matter.
So as long as I treat myself as a matter,
Forget about peace and happiness.
Bodies matter,
Mind is matter.
So what happens,
Then we will pick up this summer.
And we discussed the knowledge,
Intellect,
Behavior,
Mind.
So when we start the process of discernment,
Viveka,
Three factors are there.
Can you recognize the three factors?
One is the knowledge from the teachings.
Second is the teacher and third is the seeker.
Clear?
Now the second step of discernment starts when you start thinking by sitting with a closed eye.
We always,
You know,
Sometime we think through the mind.
So when you are closed your eyes in thinking you are not a seeker.
I have to do this.
I lost the money and I did this.
We already know that you lost the money.
We already know that you have the profit.
Why to repeat?
But we repeat.
That is behavior.
Intellect is not there.
So second level of discernment means that you close your eyes.
There are also three factors.
We are going to understand what it means by revelation.
But teacher is not there.
Knowledge is there and you are there.
Two factors are visible.
Third factor is invisible.
Can you guess?
Third factor is known as guru.
What is that guru means?
Understand that.
This body guru is not there.
Guru means ignorance to knowledge.
You are applying the knowledge to move away from ignorance.
That is the power of discernment when you start thinking within yourself sitting alone or during the day.
So that discernment invokes the invisible guru.
That is always present within us,
With us,
For us.
Are you getting it?
So once by constant contemplation and thinking over these principles,
That invisible guru appears in your intellect.
So that is why outside we adore,
We respect our guru.
So that starts bridging the gap between the knowledge and the behavior and the dispersion takes place.
Dispersion number one.
Two,
You start recognizes that there are certain behaviors,
Actions which are more impulsive in nature,
Instinctive in nature and it is not going.
So we have six treasures.
And what are those six treasures?
Sama,
Dhamma,
Uparati,
Titiksha,
Sadhasamadhan or you can simply remember the abbreviation S D U T S S and then we will pick up one after the other.
So now see the journey of the Sama.
I told you that this Sama is the husband of Shanti,
Is a masculine.
Masculine means that I have to act on the mind when it is needed.
You are talking and the next moment mind flares up or you start crying.
You become aware,
Apply that,
Apply that.
What to apply?
Sama.
Discernment and dispersion are supporting you.
Where?
From the intellect.
When they both are supporting you and you remember.
So you don't allow the mind to carry forward any movement of stress or suffering.
Why?
Because stress and suffering belongs to the body and the mind and you are not the body and the mind.
That invisible guru appears.
Think of it.
Invisible guru appears.
So that is why we say Sama is equanimity of the mind.
Sama is equanimity of the mind.
One thing more we need to understand this Sama will not work in laziness or when you are always busy.
Why it does not work in laziness?
Because you stop thinking.
You stop discernment.
Why it does not work when you are always too busy?
Your mind is scattered outside.
Did you ever ask why you are so much busy in your life?
For what you are busy?
What is the end result of your busyness?
I am seeking peace and happiness.
Can it happen by laziness?
No.
Can it happen by over busyness?
So the moment you,
Your intellect lives into that state the Sama is already there.
The peace is already there.
That is why my master used to say that,
Oh mind,
Be at peace.
This will also pass.
That is why my master used to say peace is my essential nature.
This is the power of the Sama.
So this Sama will attack your past impressions.
That includes your fear,
The sense of insecurity and will take you to the next step.
Yesterday Sam called me and he said that you guys are all thinking,
Girls are thinking together and you,
He says that we will start listening from the session one of becoming a seeker and then we will scribe it.
I said yes because not only you think and if you write,
We write emails,
We send a text for others,
We never write for ourselves.
We don't want because we take it for granted.
So I encouraged and inspired.
I think this is a wonderful thing.
So Sam,
You not only you listen,
Discuss,
Scribe it,
Write it.
So write your experiences and then make it a book.
Let it be published that how you changed how people change.
So that would be an inspiration for others.
So I have already told you that you start living a life of a seeker by thinking,
Speaking and acting,
Coming back.
Sama is simply mastery over the mind.
What is the meaning of mastery over the mind?
Make it very simple mastery over the ways we think,
We speak,
We act.
That is the mastery over the mind.
But this thinking,
Speaking and acting should be supported by the knowledge.
Knowledge comes from the discernment and dispassion.
Did you get it?
So the more and more you will apply,
You will discover that even in the midst of stress outside,
The peace is already there inside.
And that will prevent the past impressions.
Including you Terry,
Past impressions in the body.
Take that way,
Understand from that perspective.
Don't start thinking,
You know,
I have this problem so take it for granted.
This will happen.
No.
So understand this.
So in a very simple way I used to say that mind that is scattered outside in millions of directions either causes laziness,
You stop thinking,
Or it causes awfully laziness,
Means I don't have a time to think whether I'm in peace or not and let me work with the peace.
So only reason is that the mind is scattered outside in millions of directions.
So we have millions of thoughts,
So we have millions of desires.
We are seeking the desire fulfillment which is not possible and the Samadha is just opposite.
Mind is gathered inside.
All the threads of the mind that is scattered outside is gathered inside.
So from inside you are the seer,
You see the problem,
You see the solution in peace,
You see the problem.
Samadha,
First of the six treasures.
So this mastery over the mind first definitely comes from discernment and dispassion I explained to you.
Another is the very first practice I gave,
What I say the relaxation practice,
The four step relaxation practice.
It is about seven or 10 minutes.
So what will happen if you are doing it regularly,
Maybe three,
Four times during the day?
This 10 minute practice will reduce to five minutes.
And ultimately what happens after a few weeks,
This relaxation practice will be reduced to hardly a minute.
And then it is only a matter of awareness.
Mind is outside?
No.
If outside?
Yes.
Go inside?
You become aware.
All the four steps of the relaxation can be completed in 30 seconds maximum.
Then you can see that you have discovered Samadha.
Question is are we committed to become a seeker?
So we are going into the second part of the sama.
One is mind is scattered outside,
Gathered inside.
It is only a matter of awareness.
It can happen instantly.
If it does not happen instantly,
Then we need to practice.
Maybe relaxation,
Maybe self-awareness practice that I have given in which you breathe for a minute,
Then do the humming and ultimately you allow the mind to settle inside.
So when you are repeating couple of times during the day,
Then sama is set in you.
What is going to happen from the perspective of modern psychology?
That this sama is creating a new habit of inner calm and the poise and a higher awareness to replace habits and impulsive nature.
You need not to work on anger or anxiety management.
You have to work on relaxation practice and self-awareness.
You know the scientific approach anger is there so anger management.
There is no management in the world.
There is always a mismanagement.
The more you manage,
The more it returns.
Our approach is totally different.
Another point in the sama needs to be understood that this sama is not present,
That peace and calmness is not present in us because the mind is constantly running after likes and dislikes.
You cannot find out every single day in a waking state if you have all the events that belongs to liking,
Not possible.
I cannot change the word.
All the events are disliking,
That is also not possible.
But they both belong to the world.
So sama means not to be influenced by anything happening outside.
How I maintain my awareness.
I don't allow the world to live in me while living in the same world.
Are you getting it?
This is all the three steps are nothing but cultivating the habit in the mind to be happy and peaceful all the time.
You can use the word cultivation.
But that cultivating this habit is based on the discernment and the dispassion.
You think.
And discernment number two.
Do you still remember two factors are visible,
The third factor is invisible,
The guru.
Guru is not this body,
Not at all,
It has nothing,
It is a consciousness that triggers you.
Come on,
Move to what is right and good.
What is right and good is my consciousness,
Pure consciousness is my real nature.
And then this peace,
This sama is always,
Yeah,
One more point that is also very important to think over.
The mind has desires for something I do not have.
Understood.
I do not have food,
Shelter and clothes so what I need let me earn,
It will not cause any problem.
Let that desire remain.
I should be hard working.
Human means that I have to work.
Life is work,
Work is life.
Think of it.
Desire for I think I do not have.
What is the second category?
Desire for happiness and peace.
That is missing in our mind.
Desire for happiness but the desire to have happiness is missing.
Do you see that?
How many times your mind says I want peace and happiness?
And how many times I say that,
How many times the mind says I want money,
I want car,
I want clothes,
Even I have ten pairs of clothes.
I have even one percent of happiness,
I do not desire.
Do you see that?
Is it not a fact?
So when it is a fact then where you will get the peace?
How many times I desire with purity of the mind that come on,
Mind enough is enough,
I want peace.
There is a big organization in our country Jerry,
Enough is Enough.
They are taking care of the kids.
They approached me last year.
I said your approach is also enough is enough so I am not a part of that.
When your approach is wrong without clarity then it is for the sake of promotion,
Etc.
So I am not a part of it.
Think of this.
So all these four elements if you think of it,
The peace will come and if it does not come continue with the relaxation,
Self-awareness and even doing the regular practice that we are already doing will take you to the peace.
So next time we will take that how Dhamma is the so Dhamma.
Dhamma pertains to the sense organ.
Just to give you a thought of thinking that these sense organs are one-sided windows.
You know we have windows in our home.
We can see everything from inside but nobody can see us from outside.
One-sided.
Sense organs are one-sided windows.
Why to worry?
You can plug off easily but we are not able to do it.
That we will take up in our next session.
So let us start our practice now.
Eyes are closed and eyes are closed.
Think of again with knowledge.
Body is steady.
Eyes are closed gently.
The mind is looking inside.
So need not to focus.
It is you know the young will talk about that process of diffusion of the mind later.
So awareness of the body.
Mind says here is a discomfort remove that.
So easy.
Second,
Eyes are closed gently.
So it is a symbolic understanding that I close my eyes.
So I close all my sense organs to receive any inputs from the world.
But I am aware.
It does not mean that I am not aware.
I am aware I hear the noise but not interested.
I feel the sensation with reference to the touch of the couch or wherever your body is.
I feel the touch of the air,
The temperature,
Everything is there but not interested.
You see when the practice supported by the right knowledge you progress very fast.
Now because the mind has started living within,
In that state,
What I said within,
If you do this mantra,
Sarvesham Shanti Swasthir Bhavatu So you may,
You know it is a thought again,
Mantra is a thought.
May there be well-being for all.
Realize the well-being.
Well-being is an attribute of the real self.
You cannot,
You cannot think of well health of the body all the time.
Health and sickness are dynamic states.
They are constantly changing at the physical level,
At the mental level,
At the emotional level,
But not at the level of the real self.
We are talking of that real self first.
And then we see the same state of well-being in everyone.
It settles in you,
In your peace.
Sarvesham Shanti Swasthir Bhavatu I'm going to change the practice,
Let the time come.
Sarvesham Shanti Bhavatu I believe you all can contemplate the way I contemplated about the well-being.
May there be peace for all.
I'm saying may there be peace for all,
But ultimately with the reference to the real self,
With the reference to the real self,
Do you see that point?
The guru unfolds this knowledge in you.
This segment I said number two.
May there be peace for all.
So reference point is your real self,
Even though you say may there be peace for all.
When the reference is outside,
It is always either the body,
The mind or emotions.
Then what happens?
One is crying before you.
You also start crying in support of that.
Then instead of one,
The two people are in stress.
Sarvesham Purnam Bhavatu May there be completeness in all.
We are in the discernment and dispassion process.
And you will see the calmness is the peace is the result,
Samay is the natural result.
Just by contemplation and reflection,
Just by discernment and dispassion,
The answer is big yes.
So when you say may there be completeness in all,
Reference point,
Complete is real self.
What do you mean by complete?
It is never changing.
One,
It is independent.
Two,
Completeness.
One is independent.
Complete means independent.
Third,
Free from the changes happening in the world and the body and the mind and the intellect and the thoughts.
Sarvesham Mangalam Bhavatu May there be auspiciousness or happiness.
This is also translated sometime.
May there be happiness for all.
Why?
Because happiness is my essential nature.
I did not produce it,
So no one can produce it,
But everyone has that state of the happiness.
And if you contemplate on this step again and again and again,
What will happen?
The sama will settle in you.
Sama will settle in you.
Now it has settled.
Now let us go to namaste,
Mental namaste.
It will have deeper impact because the mind is already mental namaste.
Both the tip of the thumb is imaginary,
Touching the external naj.
Now remember the five sense organs and the motor organs.
That prompts me for a knowledge to act with the desire.
You are looking at the middle of the palm,
The space.
See that.
So when you are looking into that space,
My friend,
My friends,
When you are looking into that space,
There are a lot of things.
I missed one point,
That sama is a good space where in the mind it is always there.
So that is why we always refer to the space and space and space.
So now see do we need to go to the step that we normally do,
Being comfortable?
You are already there.
Mind is absorbed within.
That is the way we should understand that this is the way to progress.
Now I have done this.
It is easy and I can.
And out comes.
We will continue with that step.
That helps a lot.
Keep looking inside the head or the heart.
And start short,
Quick,
Gentle breathing from both the nostrils into the ribcage and the ribcage expand and contracts rhythmically.
Remember the nostrils,
It is a shorter breath,
Even your nostrils are blocked,
You can go into that.
Continue.
With a smile on the face,
Not a stress on the face.
Just continue as if you can continue even timelessly.
If mind has that awareness,
Mind does not react and resist,
You have already returned that,
Recognized that samādhi inside.
Keep Kṛṣṇa away.
Just continue short,
Quick,
Gentle breathing toward the nostrils and picking up awareness awareness inside the head or the heart.
Just continue short,
Quick,
Gentle breathing toward the nostrils and picking up awareness awareness inside the head or the heart.
Just continue short,
Quick,
Gentle breathing toward the nostrils and picking up awareness awareness inside the head or the heart.
Just continue,
Do not stop in the middle Just continue,
Do not stop in the middle Just continue,
Do not stop in the middle Mind will react,
Resist,
Once prevents,
No,
But you have the discernment,
You have the dispassion to continue.
Do you see that?
Do you love the knollies?
Do you see that?
Do you see that?
Do you see that?
Do you see that?
Do you see that?
And stop this.
Start breathing deep,
Silent and slow breathing,
Moving the mind from the crown of the head to the tailbone,
Looking into the space and mentally dropping the mantra.
Check how much deeply the mind is interested in singing,
Shantu hum and maintaining awareness of the space inside the spine from the crown of the head to the tailbone and as you exhale from the tailbone to the crown of the head.
We will check how the mind is responding.
We will check how the mind is responding.
We will check how the mind is responding.
Breath rhythmic,
Awareness spine with the mind and the breath going together and breathing shantu hum.
We will check how the mind is responding.
Shantu hum.
Can I use the word desperation?
Desperation.
You're seeking that peace desperately.
So that desperation becomes the positive factor.
The mind is already inside,
Moving with the breath.
We will check how the mind is responding.
So we check the mind is living within.
The shantu hum,
Body remains steady.
You may experience tingling,
Freezing,
Vision cut.
Oh,
Now there.
We have already passed that stage.
Leave the deep silent in the slow breath.
Look inside the heart.
See that you're already there.
You are aware of the space or emptiness or blankness.
Now pick a point in that space.
I'll tell you what happens later if anyone shares that experience with these sessions.
So you look at a point in the space.
When the moment you see that point in the space,
Drop shantu hum.
You'll be there.
Wait there and then continue the journey of the mind.
Moving inside to the deeper space point,
Shantu hum,
Waiting.
Let's say it is almost a known practice.
You're aware at the same time you're aware of the state of comfort and steadiness,
Motionless state of the body.
Second,
Then you are aware inside the heart.
So what is that?
I'm aware of the space,
Calmness or blankness.
So I see the entire space or entire blankness.
Why pick a point in that space?
Any point?
The way the mind tricks us,
We are tricking the mind.
I'm just giving you a hint.
And the moment you pick a point in the space,
Shantu hum,
And do not stop.
Move the mind further,
Deeper inside the heart.
Second milestone,
If I say so.
Third,
Fourth,
Fifth.
The time comes,
You will discover that this mind as if,
As though,
Stopped.
Can we say that is the merging of the mind into the real self?
Yes.
Point of revelation.
Yes.
Your other thoughts will come.
That is what I say.
Mind is scattered outside in the lens of directions.
And now even stop dropping shantu hum.
You are in a state of doing nothing.
So when you are in a state of doing nothing,
You see the mind is still working on its own.
Did you understand the chains of behavior?
If it is not,
We may need a couple of more sessions of practice,
With a discernment and expression and clear understanding of this sama.
So this sama not only helps us in our day-to-day life,
But it also deepens our practice.
Shanti Shanti Shanti Om Shanti Shanti Shanti Om Bring your mind on the right hand and the mind doesn't want to return.
But we have an intellect,
We can make the mind return,
But that experience is typical,
Unique.
Means what I was explaining.
Bring the mind on the left hand.
My friends,
Raise both your palms,
Place it on your eyes,
Open the eyes inside the palms to gather your experiences and bring the hands down.
How are you,
Stephen?
I'm good.
I'm in a different environment right now.
And so there's sounds,
Noises,
Things I'm not used to when I'm meditating at home.
So I had to apply the DD and D squared through this entire process,
Which was good because I was able to let the breeze go by,
The bugs buzzing by my ear and all that other stuff and not affect my meditation.
The space during all of that D squared stuff that was going on was pulsating.
So it had its borders.
And so I saw myself in the space and the space was coming out and then contracting.
And I started to realize that it's that discernment,
Dispassion that I was thinking about.
And then as I knew I let go of it all because the space cleared and it widened and the borders didn't exist anymore.
And it allowed me to just settle into my meditation.
What a beautiful narration of your experience.
I think everyone has heard it.
Kristina,
Do you remember D squared?
How are you,
Kristina?
What a beautiful.
That is what happens.
So DD,
That awareness is nothing but the guru.
But as long as you do not realize the outer human person is your guru,
Representative of that inner guru.
That is the only difference.
How are you,
Kristina?
That was wonderful.
I have yet to have been able to go that deep.
So I'm honestly I'm not getting excited.
But that was,
I'm just,
I'm so grateful.
Honestly,
I'm trying to process all of that.
Just coming forth with everything that you've been telling us and really I'm feeling,
I'm feeling very great.
Good.
Thank you.
I can't explain.
Continue,
Continue.
One day it will happen.
How are you,
Brandy?
Then we'll go to Jerry.
Yes.
I'm okay.
The last couple of days have been especially challenging.
So for my practice today was just really about separating myself,
You know,
From that.
And but I mean it's,
You know,
Like I'm showing up,
I'm practicing.
So it's part of the process,
I think.
Yes,
Yes.
It is a journey.
I think I referred indirectly.
So when you say that couple of days are challenging,
Who says this?
Mind.
Why don't you challenge the mind?
Challenge your mind.
How come you are saying that days are challenging?
Pick up the point of the calmness and peace within.
And then work.
Possible.
Good.
How are you,
Jerry?
Sorry,
I'm good.
The message I already think my takeaway with cultivating is as I,
As you kind of spoke with us in the first 30 minutes and then through the meditation,
It,
It's clear that the,
That the peace and the happiness and the well-being and the completeness and is always there.
And then the other thing,
The other things,
The adversity,
The challenges,
The pain,
All those things come and go.
And,
And we just,
We know that they come and go.
And what's permanent is that ease and happiness and completeness.
So it gives us the,
When we cultivate,
Like we kind of pull out that adversity,
We don't allow it to stay with us and repeat itself constantly right throughout the day.
We just go back to our calmness and our peace and we know it'll pass,
Right?
Beautiful.
Such a beautiful narration.
You see,
It is another extension of what Brandy was saying.
But with a greater and in depth,
What never changes is me.
Finished.
And whatever is changing,
Many days are,
Couple of days are challenging,
Other days are not,
Constantly changing,
It cannot be me.
When this discernment is firmly settled,
You live in meditation.
You don't practice it.
How are you,
Vaibhav?
Sir,
I'm calm.
It's like that while doing the practice,
Now I was in a space,
Nothing was there,
It's just calmness all around that space.
It's not that my mind has to look to that calmness.
My mind knows that here is the calmness,
I'm doing the practice,
No disturbance,
It was very peaceful.
Beautiful.
There are different expressions.
You practice,
We all practice one meditation.
The experience has to be different because of my mind,
Because of my past impression,
Because of my behavior,
Because of what is already deposited,
Accumulated in the storehouse of my mind.
And that is how we evolve.
Beautiful.
How are you,
Sangeeta?
You see our great meditator is still meditating,
Yes.
Yes,
Sangeeta,
How are you?
Good.
Good.
That is her perception.
She says when she says shantoham deeper inside,
As if it is cleansing is happening and that opens the space.
You see all our expression should point to these principles.
Then we know our experiences are helping me to progress.
I'm happy,
Keep smiling Kristina.
Yes,
Yes.
So is there any question?
Summer,
Peace,
Calmness,
I told you.
What I told you,
The very important point in summer is active process in the intellect.
Shanti is a passive state.
Shanti that is why is known as feminine and summer is known as masculine.
So what is the message that it is a masculine?
I have lot of stress.
Who says mind?
Be active,
Proactive.
I would say proactive.
That we use the word.
The way Stephen was proactive,
Lot of noises are going but separating.
Disagment and dispassion will separate in the intellect.
Mind cannot separate.
Mind is listening through the senses.
So if you struggle with the mind,
Nothing will happen.
Apply discernment and dispassion.
Didi,
You are there.
Very good.
I'm so happy.
So that is all for today.
We'll meet again on coming Monday.
Thank you.
Thank you.
