In this session we consider how, what we think of as mistakes, can sometimes lead us to wonderful places in our lives. We are asked to look at mistakes as opportunities instead of shortcomings, opening hidden doors and new pathways that might not have been possible before. This peacebeam can be used individually or as one day of the Begin Bright series.

Hello,

Welcome to Peacebeam.

Let us begin with step one,

Notice.

Just begin to notice how you feel and hold the question for yourself,

How am I today?

Just notice the answers that come back,

Your mood,

Your emotions and how your body feels.

As we move to step two,

Breathe.

So now just tune into the natural rise and fall of your chest,

The feel of the air moving in and out and just watch it bring your attention just to that and breathe.

Beautiful.

And now we will connect the rhythm of your breath to the rhythm of your heart.

So just imagine now your breath flowing in and out of your heart center.

Deep,

Relaxing,

Calm.

And as those two rhythms in you unite,

Just feel yourself drop into the space they create and breathe.

As we move to step three,

Activate.

Mistake is a powerful word.

When we hear it,

We can feel something in its contract,

Something becomes a little bit smaller.

The word has long threads and hooks that hang off it carrying all kinds of images and memories and meanings for all of us.

It's heavy.

But think of this,

We actually have absolutely no idea what is a mistake and what isn't.

We think we do,

But we don't.

There is a Chinese folk tale about a man who loses his horse and all of his neighbors think that he has terrible luck.

But the next day,

The horse returns with a rare and beautiful mare.

What good luck,

His neighbors think.

And then the man's son rides the mare and falls off and he breaks his leg.

What bad luck,

Think the neighbors.

And soon after there is a war and all the young men are called to go and fight.

But the man's son is saved because he is lame.

And so what this tale illustrates is that there is no way for us to tell what is a mistake and what isn't.

And maybe,

Maybe there is no such thing.

Maybe there really is just what is happening right now.

Neither good nor bad,

Just full of unforeseen possibilities.

Step four,

Being.

Just for today,

Let the word mistake open up for you.

Allow it to mean possibility,

Hidden doors suddenly visible and open.

And be gentle with yourself if something doesn't go right today.

Relax and open to what it might lead to.

And make that gentle,

Relaxed and flexible energy available to the people around you,

Especially the ones who might make it a mistake that affects you.

And if that happens,

Smile because perhaps it's magic.

Have a beautiful day.

I really liked this meditation except for the use of the word 'lame'. I'm not sure of it's possible to edit the track? I felt it could be affronting out of nowhere for someone with that kind of injury.

I have always taken โ€œmistakeโ€ to be kind of neutralโ€”glad to hear Peacebeam suggest the same! Thank you! I enjoy the Begin Bright Series very much!

I recently made a huge mistake that crashed my world. This very short message of seeing a mistake as a possibility stunned me. I hope I can stop beating myself up and open myself up to new directions created by my slip up.

I love this idea - it runs alongside the Japanese philosophy of kintsukuroi - when broken pottery is repaired with gold dust and thus becomes more beautiful- โ€œdo not be saddened at this damage - it is only change that has allowed something more beautiful to evolveโ€ ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป
