Inspired by the Buddhist practice of "Non-Meditation, Non-Distraction", Jamie leads you through a meditation creating a soft focus on noticing and awareness. Not straining, but allowing an inner gentleness. Allowing the debris of our mind to settle so we can align with the present moment. To get out of the way of the storm and settle more into the peace within.

So,

I wanted to bring in something a little bit different for us to meditate on that I love.

It's a Buddhist teaching,

A Buddhist meditation from Buddhism that you guys might have heard.

And it's one of my favorite.

It's actually called non meditation.

It's called non meditation,

Non distraction.

Because as you know,

I'm not a huge fan of working really hard to find peace of mind because that is what is already ours regardless of circumstance.

It might take time,

It might take patience,

It might take some exploring.

But hard work and effort and focus and strain is not how we find our way back to that default.

And it can feel really uncomfortable because we intuitively know when we've gone farther away from it,

We feel really stressed out or like something's off.

So because we feel so strong in the opposite direction,

Where we get that emergency feeling and we're like,

Okay,

I really need to do something and need to bring out my tools and I need to bring out my techniques.

And ironically,

It seems counterintuitive,

But the more that we just get out of the way,

More that we just slow down,

We stop picking the scab,

Our mind naturally settles enough for us to hear ourselves.

Michael Neal actually gave this great metaphor that's coming to my mind right now.

It's like if our answers are at the bottom of a pool,

Like in all of our brains are swimming pools.

And I said to you guys,

How do you get your answer or your answer,

Your clarity,

Your peace,

Your resilience,

Whatever it is you're looking for.

You wouldn't jump into the pool and look down there because first of all,

You could only see the little part of it if you're in there and staring at it.

And you wouldn't want to move like this to try to find the answer.

You just sit there quietly at the top.

You'd wait for the water to settle.

So you've got this outside of you and then you'd look and you'd see.

Same thing with our mind.

So we,

I think sometimes we think non-doing means not doing out in the world.

Absolutely not.

I think we're afraid the peace of mind will make us lazy.

Quite the opposite.

So not so non meditation,

Non distraction is simply about without needing to focus.

We just notice.

So we're not meditating.

We're just aware.

So we're going to,

I'm going to calm you guys down.

We're going to settle in and you can feel the difference of me saying focused on your breath,

Which is like a strained thing as opposed to,

Huh,

I'm just going to like with a little bit of fascination and curiosity,

Just notice a breath.

It's like,

It's like the subtlety of a feather.

Like I'm just noticing,

Just here noticing for no particular reason at all.

Not to get anywhere.

Just noticing,

Noticing my breath.

I'm noticing the sensations that are moving through my body,

Maybe thoughts.

And then if our mind wanders,

This is the non meditation,

Non distraction.

If our mind wanders,

We don't say,

Okay,

Here,

The tool and technique is to bring it back.

I have to focus on awareness.

You just gently bring it back to the awareness.

So that's where the non distraction.

So it's not,

It's,

It's not that I'm allowing my mind to wander crazily and do whatever it wants.

I'm just slowly,

Gently,

Constantly coming back to that very easy non focused awareness because your awareness is who you are beyond the thinking and the less we make a big deal out of our thinking,

The easier thinking can move through our system to energy.

And then the quicker our pool can settle and the faster we can see what we need to see underneath to allow us to be at peace.

You know?

So this again,

This might be difficult for you.

You might love this.

Let this be so simple and every time your mind wanders,

Just like that little gentle feather,

No need to focus.

We're just going to notice something.

That's it.

Okay,

So I'm just going to meet you guys all right now on my end.

Beautiful.

So go ahead.

Now this is a great time to turn on your music if you want.

If you'd like to do a silent meditation,

This is an amazing one to do silent as well,

But just make sure your music's on low enough so that you can still hear my voice.

So just playing that in the background and then go ahead.

You can sit up or lay down.

No one's watching you right now.

So I just want you guys to be comfortable.

Get cozy.

You can sit cross legged or legs out.

Maybe your body,

Listen to your body right now.

Maybe your body just wants to lay down and have a good rest.

That's totally fine too.

Just put the computer next to your head so you can hear me.

We're just giving our mind a chance to settle.

So remember this brain of ours,

It's meant to just filter out the junk,

The old memories,

The projections of the future.

When we say to the brain,

That's not necessary,

Right?

It just out,

But most of us look at it and we go,

This is necessary.

This is real.

This is true.

So what we're doing today is we're letting,

We're giving that filter a chance to just work for us.

So we're not doing it.

We're just gently letting ourselves be present so that our mind can clean itself out.

Good.

So close those eyes if you haven't done so yet.

And just start to take a couple really long,

Slow inhales and exhales in and out of the body.

Just let yourself relax right now.

There's absolutely nothing to do for our time together.

You don't have to focus on work or the day.

This is break time.

This is settling the pool so we can see what's at the bottom time.

Just getting out of the way so we can align with the design of our brain.

Let it work for us.

Utilize our mind to the best of its ability.

So just let that physical body as always start to relax and settle in.

Really let your brain start to soften.

Just releasing all of that noise that we've been around for so long inside and outside of the head.

The liquid of needing to control this or make your experience better.

Today we're just simply getting out of the way and letting the mind filter out what is not important to us,

What we don't need to survive,

To get by,

To be happy,

To be whole.

Just let it do its job.

Let yourself become aware of that connection between your physical body and the ground.

And then just let yourself take some really easy inhales and exhales and as you do just let your body start to melt down into the surface.

Just simultaneously softening all the parts of our body,

Our face,

Our jaw,

Our lips,

The corners of the lips,

Our chest,

Our belly,

Our hips.

This is your time to focus on you,

To let the mind settle.

There's nowhere else to be than right here.

Just fully let yourself come into this experience knowing that I'll bring you back.

When it's over so you can just let yourself go.

And you inhale and you exhale and you soften a little bit more.

And you just sink down into the surface where you are.

You just let go.

You come into right here no matter how fast you are running.

We just slow down from all of that.

The brain can filter out what we don't need.

This is true for every human.

Just see if you can allow yourself to take your foot off of the gas.

Let go of running and speeding and seeking and searching.

Just slow it all down.

Those bones and those muscles soft.

Settling into your seat,

Into the ground.

There you go.

You're just kind of floating and you're hanging out right here as best as you can.

You're not trying to better change or control.

You're letting your mind work for us.

We just see if for right now we can let go of the reins.

And letting go of being the one who steers.

We allow ourselves right now to simply be a co-creative passenger.

It's not my job to settle myself down even though it looks like it.

I'm just going to let my mind do that for me as I get out of the way.

Feel yourself slowing down and getting out of the way.

It's that feeling of no big deal.

I'm just going to let this paper cut heal on its own.

I don't have to do anything else.

It's like that same feeling with your thinking right now.

Just let yourself settle a little bit deeper within.

Going on a little journey.

And we're going to let ourselves hang out in a beautiful space of non-meditation.

Letting ourselves be and letting the mind settle without our doing.

And we're moving from being our thinking to just being our awareness of it all.

And that will give the mind a chance to clear as we hang out in that space for a little bit.

It's like hiring someone to clean your house so that you can just put your feet up on the couch for a bit.

Let it be done for you right now.

And so we allow ourselves to move into this really easy awareness.

Gentle like a feather.

No particular thing to focus on.

No strain.

No effort.

And you just kind of maybe bounce around in there and your awareness lands on something neither here nor there.

No particular order of importance.

All the same.

Maybe you're just aware of the breath.

You're aware of the sounds.

And you're not doing anything.

Just simply,

Gently,

Aware.

Maybe sometimes thoughts or sensations come through and you're just aware.

What's the difference between kind of being blown around by your thinking as opposed to just grounded?

Gentle?

Just with a little bit of fascination and curiosity just watching a movie.

We're only focused on the watching part,

The observing part,

The aware part.

And so on your own,

Knowing that your mind will wander and you just,

No big deal,

Human coming back home,

Giving my brain a chance to clear.

The only job is to just be the awareness right now.

It's neutral.

Nothing to gain here.

Gently aware of my breath.

No focus.

It's wherever my awareness goes,

I am that.

I'm not meditating.

I'm just aware.

A validoller is the Drew of the emotion.

You you you Simply who is the one that is aware?

So simple sometimes we miss it I'm not needing this to feel any way or get you anywhere,

But just knowing that as we rest is this Pool is settling Getting out of the way letting the house be cleaned you Just noticing easy noticing the breath Sensations the thoughts you just resting as the noticer No effort no doing you you You see awareness resting as such for just a little bit you you you Not really doing anything at all No expectations nowhere to get to you can arresting beyond the mind one simple thing you getting out of the way so the brain can filter out what is not necessary for you We just rest for a little bit longer on our awareness in our awareness you you just use the breath for this last moment no focus or strain You just kind of notice it.

Oh,

That's a breath.

That's a sound No big deal No thoughts attached to it you You were awareness Not meditating you just hanging out for a little bit being a watcher you you Good and then as you feel ready just slowly start to Notice that connection between your physical body and the ground Really aware of where your tailbone and your hips are you are planted on the ground And you just start to notice the space that your body occupies And maybe gently scan and become aware of just that you are inside the top of your head All the way down to your tailbone down to the bottom of your feet This is my body and I'm in it and I'm on the ground Right behind my eyes tucked in there Just taking a couple deep breaths inhales and exhales really expanding that belly those ribs that chest and releasing just a couple deep breaths back to the morning Really effortless and easy Just coming back home aware Knowing that you can come back to this reset even for a minute a day You just disengage from your thinking and you just come into easy awareness Let your mind settle And as you feel ready keep taking another deep breath and then bring some subtle movements back into the body And as you bring another deep breath back in you just start to stretch and move back parts of your body that feel ready to stretch and move
