From the number of downloads of my Podcast, I may conclude that it is a popular topic. Many people came back at me to ask HOW they could realize discipline as a part of their life. To have discipline we need to set targets first, we need a goal to give discipline a function in our life. First, let me make the sequence of reaching discipline clear so you understand the need and reasons why it is one of our most important characteristics in every person’s life. The first step to discipline is to set it.

Discipline and how to achieve it.
From the number of downloads on my podcast in the past,
I may conclude that this is a very popular topic.
Many people came back at me and asked me how they could realize discipline as a part of their life.
To have discipline,
We need to set targets first.
We need a goal to give discipline a function in life.
First let me make this sequence of rich discipline clear,
So you can understand the need and the reason why it is one of your most important characteristics in every personal life.
The first step to discipline is really set goals.
These goals should be arranged in order of time.
Take some short term goals,
Medium term and of course the long term dreams.
The dreams that you have to realize within years.
And the short term should take weeks,
Medium,
Months and of course the long term is maybe a lifetime.
And each goal should be reasonable and within reach and possible.
Because that is the matter of discipline.
Nothing is impossible.
Even your dreams and everything could become possible after you set the first step.
But second,
You have to be realistic.
Let me give you a very important sample of a person that just passed away here in 2021.
And her name is Bibien Mantle,
A Dutch 3 fold Winter Paralympic gold medalist and 5 times world champion para snowboarding athlete.
Bibien Mantle won the Paralympics gold in the snowboard cross discipline in 2014 and the 2018 Paralympic Winter Games while battling severe cancer 9 times.
She won this gold medal in 2018 at the age of 45.
Despite all her problems,
And believe me there were a lot of problems in her health,
She stayed an incredible positive mind with a really amazing effort and severe discipline until the end of her days.
To reach any goal in your life you should have a positive mind about reaching it.
And when the original goal is no longer in reach or possible or needed you have to be flexible to set another one and another one and another one which suits the situation and the possibilities that you have.
And discipline is not made of steel but it's able to change direction until the end.
Most people think that discipline is a concrete state of mind that sets you toward a goal.
Discipline is a positive way of thinking which is flexible,
Focused and strongly lived in the year and now.
I remember that I told you that discipline needs to set goals in the future to work towards it.
This seems to conflict with the living in the year and now,
Living in the moment.
But the here and now,
That's where you are active.
You have to perform something to be ready for the next moments and the goals in the future.
Everything starts in the here and now,
Every effort.
It has a moment of starting the motion towards this future.
This is what I call the decision moment.
So you have to make a decision.
You make up your mind to go for something.
How many times you decide to go for something?
I'm sure it was many,
Many,
Many times.
Some people make everyday decisions to go for something,
To change their lives.
You have to fight for a goal and make all effort to reach that goal.
Until the next morning,
When the headache or another little discomfort gives an excuse to delay or even downgrade your efforts.
It will be later.
It's no problem.
I can start tomorrow.
But there is no later.
There never is.
Tomorrow never comes.
Your life is here and now.
And not in the future,
Neither in the past.
Everything you do,
Not today,
Will never be done.
And that is a 100% fact.
Discipline is based on facts,
On positive thinking and reality.
And this reality is what you do in the here and now,
Today,
Living in the moment.
And discipline is really very,
Very personal.
And you never can give any duty of discipline to others.
It refers to a personal responsibility for mental and physical action.
And it reflects your past into your future.
Every effort you take today is found back in the future.
Like the foundation of a house is needed to build the house.
So is your responsibility for action and the duty to perform that foundation of discipline.
And everything starts with a thought.
A simple mind spindle that grows from a baby to an adult in less than a second.
The thought is the foundation.
And you should ask yourself,
Is it strong enough to carry your house of action,
Your future goal?
How strong are your thoughts?
Why are they just spindles in the wind?
And be blown away like the balloons in the wind.
And to build discipline,
You need to realize that all these factors have a direct influence on your final effort to get that desired discipline.
Ask yourself,
What if I have only a short time to live like baby?
What will my life look like?
Will I do everything in my effort to leave the memories of a good person behind?
And will I lay back and wait till my last moment is there?
If you do not wish to give life all the effort you have for the time and you are here on earth,
The question should be if your life has sense to live.
We do not need to be Olympic champions or even the best of the street.
There is no need for any winning.
But surely we do not live for only losing.
There are many people around you,
Even in the spotlights,
That you think they effortless have reached their goal.
But behind that facade,
What you see,
What you read,
What you hear is much more than you do not know.
Take the efforts of Robin Williams,
Who fought his mental disease with all his efforts until he reached the point of no return.
And he took his life,
Had to end the suffering,
Not only of himself,
But of everybody around him,
Of his image,
His great movies,
His personality.
Even to take your own life needs discipline and strong effort.
To begin or end something in life needs your courage and effort to realize it.
Even it means it will be the last thing you do do.
An important tool to reach discipline is methodical application,
Planning,
Routine,
Continuity.
All words with the same goal.
Do things regular until they become habit.
And then it seems to take no effort to perform them.
And that is the biggest secret of discipline.
It becomes such a routine that you are not even aware of it anymore.
Only others can see it.
For you,
The effort of routine is who you are.
You are living in the here and now.
Your performance of life.
Yes.
Discipline starts with routines,
Repetitions of actions so frequent that you are no longer aware of them.
And they will become a part of you.
This routine,
When you change your thinking,
It will influence your thoughts and every action you take on a daily basis.
Real discipline is effortless as it is a part of your routines and come with a positive mindset.
And no matter what happens to you in your life,
Even toward the end,
You can face everything with a positive mind and attitude.
A strong side effect of this positive disciplined mindset is that you become a loving and understanding person.
You have compassion for others who are still on their way toward the goal that you have reached already.
And to live a good life,
To be a proper person.
The self-discipline is the foundation of your personality and it really becomes effortless.
Before you reach that moment,
You have to put a lot of effort inside it because nothing in life comes for free.
So let us start with exercising to reach that simple discipline routine that you need to build your personal discipline of life.
Okay,
And how I take you into that world of how to build it.
Come on.
It is every morning or every evening you brush your teeth.
Do you agree with me?
Now,
Set a fixed time that you start the procedure for every day,
Seven days a week and no exception.
That must be easy,
Right?
Everybody is brushing their teeth,
Cost little money and is seemingly effortless.
But set a time,
Just set a specific time and this routine is not only brushing your teeth,
But also you start cleaning your face,
Your eyes,
Your ears and your neck.
Clean it,
Wash it and then dry it and prepare for going to bed or just for the day and wake up.
At this moment,
If you do it in the evening,
You are not allowed to have any food or drinks.
So after cleaning your teeth,
No food,
No drinks,
Nothing allowed.
So the second chance is to create a food routine.
Set specific times for when you eat and not every time,
But just two specific times,
Two meals on a fixed time every day.
Just put it in your diary.
Every day at this time you eat and make sure your food is ready.
Make sure you don't need to prepare it.
Make sure it's there when you reach that time.
So you have to prepare your meal in advance and make it ready.
Set it down.
And at that time you start to eat,
It is there,
Ready to eat.
You can fix that and we can move to the third routine.
It will take you a little bit of more effort.
For some people,
It is one of their personal problems is to take care of their clothing.
Many people without discipline,
They make a mess of their clothing.
When you go to bed,
Lay or hang your clothes that you did use and then let it hang to dry or get fresh air.
And you will maybe put it on for the next day or you put it in the washing basket.
It's important to create a fixed routine to take care first of the used clothes and after that prepare the clothes that you will use the next day.
Used clothes often create a mess around in the house.
This mess in your house,
In your room has a serious effect on discipline and a messy surrounding gives the wrong sign to the mind and that wish to get control over your life.
A messy environment shouts the message that you do not need to be disciplined and that routines are not there.
You are living in the wilds.
But here,
Most people make a big mistake and nature has a very severe discipline.
Everywhere and every animal,
Plant or even natural events follow an extremely strict discipline and controlled routine.
Everything in nature follows an order,
A routine and a controlled discipline.
We fight nature by working against discipline itself.
Our nature is based on these routines and orders of things.
For example,
As we break our arm,
We go to the doctor and ask for help to heal it.
The healing process follows that strict order of nature unless we disturb it.
And the method to build discipline is by start building the right environment that allows you to think straight,
That implies order of things,
That is clean,
Organized and with space that makes you able to oversee the things.
Discipline is nothing else than the gift of nature to organize your life,
Your efforts and goals and finally your relationships.
Listen to this,
Because more than one time,
As it takes a lot of time to make sense in your life.
The real effort comes effortless when you put the discipline of the positive mind in it.
Think about it,
Organize it and listen to it again and again.
