Eating is an enjoyable activity to satisfy hunger. We do not connect with that joy if we eat out of habit or overreat and feel unwell. Eating with intention and attention allows us to experience the pleasure of eating. Any simple act of enjoying life allows us to build more positivity in our brain. This guided practice is designed to build the art of mindful eating, while allowing you to practice being present. Note: You are invited to have a small piece of food like a grape with you, before starting this practice.

Very Well Hi,

I am Kathy Hadizadeh.

I'm the founder of Heart Mind Tuning and today in this guided meditation we are going to explore together the art of mindful eating.

For this purpose I want to invite you to bring to this experience a piece of food,

Something easy,

Maybe a piece of chocolate or a grape.

That would be a good option for this experience.

Now I want to invite you to get comfortable,

To get grounded for this experience.

We begin by connecting to our breath and body.

I want to invite you to feel your feet on the ground and notice your experience in this very moment.

With your awareness in this moment notice any thoughts,

Sensations or emotions that you are experiencing.

Let's tune into the awareness or sensations that you have in your body of feeling hungry,

Thirsty or maybe even feeling full at the moment.

If you were going to eat or drink something right now,

What is your body hungry for?

What are you thinking of drinking?

Just pay attention and notice with your awareness the sensations that give you this kind of information.

Now gently pick up the food item you have brought to this session.

Bring your attention to the item in your hand and I want you to imagine that you are seeing this item for the first time.

Be curious,

Observe it with curiosity.

Pay attention to its color,

Shape,

Texture and size.

Do you notice anything else?

Do you sense or feel anything else about this food item?

Now I want you to imagine what it took for this item to get to your hands.

Maybe sunshine,

Water,

Time,

People who work in the fields,

Processing,

Shipping,

Trucks,

Drivers,

All of these.

You may experience a choice at this time to feel gratitude for everyone involved in the cultivation and preparation of this item of food.

Let's see if this feeling resonates with you,

This feeling of gratitude,

This feeling of everybody being involved to bring you this piece of food.

As you are with this gratitude,

Maybe you want to bring your own blessing to it.

Next we move on to touching this food item with our fingers.

So very gently place it between your fingers,

Feel the texture,

The temperature,

The shape,

How it feels in your hands in between your fingers.

You may notice it's smooth,

Maybe it is rough,

Maybe it is sticky.

Again notice your sensations,

Your thoughts,

Your emotions at this time.

And still continue to breathe and be fully present in this moment with yourself and with this piece of food item in between your fingers.

Next let's play with the smell.

Bring this piece of food toward your nose,

Smell it with your full awareness.

Does it bring any memories?

Does it bring any sensations or reactions in your body?

Have you smelled this before?

Even before you eat it you may notice that now you are beginning to have a response,

Even a digestive response in your body just by noticing and smelling this piece of food item.

Maybe the memories are sweet,

Maybe not,

But at least you are aware of it.

Now I want to invite you with full awareness to move your hand towards your mouth and place this food item into your mouth.

But don't chew it,

Don't swallow it,

Let it just be in your mouth.

Roll it around to different parts of your mouth,

Fill it with your tongue,

You can push it against your teeth.

Notice the flavor and the texture.

Be with the physical sensations within your body,

Especially your mouth and your gut and continue to breathe as you explore this sensation of having this food item in your mouth.

Now it is the time,

Take a bite,

Notice the flavor,

Notice the change of texture,

Very slowly begin to chew and notice the parts of your mouth that are involved in chewing.

How does the sound and movement of chewing feel to you?

Be with this sensation and when you are ready,

Swallow it.

Swallow it and notice how it follows from your mouth and throat into your stomach.

Notice the sensation and taste that may be lingering in your mouth.

And I want you to connect again with your body and your breath and see what your experience in this moment feels like.

Maybe you can do it again with another food item and see if you can repeat this whole process.

But before you do that,

Let's just close this experience together.

Let's bring to mind all that you experienced from the time that you brought awareness to your breath,

To your body.

The feeling of anticipation,

Connecting with hunger or thirst or being full in your body and then moving on with this experience ever so slowly that makes it so meaningful and so rich.

And in the process you even might have brought to yourself that feeling of gratitude,

That opening of your heart to the universe and to all the people who were involved to bring you this piece of food,

The nature.

The nature who could have been part of this process,

All of it together.

We with this journey that we took together,

Immerse in it and try to remember it when you are having a chance next time to eat.

Eating mindfully is delicious.

Be.
