Kindness.
Be kind,
For everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.
Said the Greek philosopher Plato.
If we define kindness as being friendly,
Caring and considerate,
It's hard to argue with this.
Looking back over the past week,
Month or year,
It's often the moments of kindness,
Given and received,
That we remember most vividly.
So why are there times when it's so hard to put kindness into practice?
Give yourself the option of relaxing and stepping back from your other activities for a few minutes.
Take a quiet breath and reflect.
Do you ever stop to help an elderly person struggling with a heavy bag?
Or are you too busy?
Do you ever get distracted by reading or texting and fail to connect with a friend sitting right next to you?
Is there somebody that you don't like enough to do them a kindness?
What about your own need for kindness?
Do you sometimes push yourself until you're exhausted and hardly able to function?
Do you ever beat yourself up when you've made a simple mistake?
Do you stop to make yourself a cup of tea?
All of us flourish in an atmosphere of kindness.
And being kind to others is a form of kindness to ourselves.
It's one of the most direct ways to relax and to feel good.
And kindness often ripples out in unexpected ways.
Sometimes all it takes is to pause to connect with our own natural goodness.
And to remember that even the smallest act of kindness will make a difference.
The Dalai Lama says,
Whenever possible,
Be kind.
It is always possible.
What can you do to bring more kindness into the world today?
