This week we continue with the second episode of our Breath series. In this exercise we combine visualization and embodiment with our breathwork in a method called Praying from the Clay, inspired by Franciscan Priest, Father Richard Rohr in his book "Just This". The exercise is primarily based on ideas from Genesis 2:7, Romans 8:26, and 1 Corinthians 3:16.

Hello,

And welcome to Methods,

An online experiment in guided prayer and meditation.

Praying from the clay.

God breathed into the clay of the earth,

And it became a living being,

Or Adama.

Genesis 2 7.

When we cannot choose words in order to pray properly,

The Spirit expresses our pleas in ways that can never be put into words,

And these pleas are according to the mind of God.

Romans 8 26-27.

According to Father Richard Rohr,

A full prayer must draw from both breath and clay,

From above and outside,

And also equally from below and within.

It must have both inspiration and embodied energy.

The typical route of prayer is a mental one.

We conceive of God as somewhere out there,

Up above,

In the clouds,

The man upstairs.

But often we forget about the incarnation of God in the flesh,

John 1 14,

And the gift of the indwelling Spirit,

Romans 5 5.

If these scriptures are true,

Then we must pray from the clay,

Not just to a God somewhere out there,

But also from God within us.

Your very own body receives and knows,

And is a temple where God dwells in the Spirit.

1 Corinthians 3 16-17.

The exercise goes like this.

Place your feet flat on the floor and straighten your spine.

Breathe deeply and slowly.

Pray to God,

Only this time,

Not thinking of your prayer as much as energetically feeling your prayer.

Pay attention from the bottom up and from the inside out.

Rest into the body of Christ energy instead of trying to pull the infinite God into your finite world.

As you finish your prayer,

Try to continue your day with an attitude of coming from God.

Finally! I've been looking for something like this. Richard Rohr's comments on how to pray contemplatively are short but insightful. The dark ambient background track fits perfectly.
