Recovery can be tricky navigation.

You have empires to build and conquer,

But you're not sure how to navigate or where to begin.

That's where I come in.

My name is Erin Colleen Garrity,

Yoga studio owner,

Certified recovery coach,

Yoga therapist and author,

And this is Thriving After Addiction,

Where I teach you how to show up for your life fully and heal yourself while you do it.

Welcome back to Thriving After Addiction.

This is Erin.

Thank you so much for joining me today.

Today's meditation is a meditation for depression.

Depression is heavy.

Depression sucks away all of our dreams,

All of our hopes,

And we walk around like we have a pile of bricks on our back.

It distorts our vision of the future,

And it prevents us from reaching our goals,

From loving ourselves,

And of course,

From loving others.

I invite you to take some deep breaths with me,

And I want to plant the seed that depression is a hardened layer of when we are disconnected from ourselves,

And all of the doubts and all the negativity that can get stuck to us start to harden.

It is not you.

It is the trappings of the mind and energy in your body.

Stay with me.

Stay with me and breathe.

I want to invite you into this safe space.

I want you to know that you're important.

Your suffering is important to me.

I have been through the loathes and heaviness of depression,

And when that happens,

I become very small.

My world becomes very dark,

And I forget how much I am loved.

So,

I see you.

I hear you,

And your suffering is valid and important.

But I offer,

It is optional.

Stay with me.

Breathe.

I want you to start to feel your body.

I want you to feel the biggest sensation you can in your body.

Take a breath or two,

See if you can hone in on it.

And then,

I want you to notice the smallest sensation in your body,

The most subtle,

Biggest and smallest,

Biggest and smallest.

And then,

Allow yourself to experience both at once.

Perhaps you've noticed,

Just with that little activity,

A little bit of space has been cleared.

I invite you to go into that space.

I'm with you,

And together it is safe.

You are never alone.

Even without my voice,

You are never alone.

Breathe.

You can do this.

Keep softening and going in.

Breathing deep,

Breathing deep.

Inhale and exhale.

And as we start to travel into the body,

The mind is going to continue to bait you.

Your mind likes patterns,

And it might have the pattern of depression right now.

In this pattern,

You are surviving,

And so it's your brain's job to keep you surviving.

But sometimes,

Just because we're surviving doesn't mean that we're living a full life.

And so,

As the brain doesn't understand this,

And a lot of its primal parts are activated,

I invite you,

When this temptation happens to go up into your mind and start thinking about this,

I invite you rather to drop back in and feel.

And even ground yourself by pressing your index and thumb together.

A reminder that you can feel,

And that it's okay.

Continue to breathe,

And as you inhale,

Imagine that you are inflating your body to where any hardened shell on the outer layer of your skin,

Your heart,

Your organs,

Or any of your chakras,

Your energy center points in your body.

As any layer of hardness starts to melt,

As you continue to soften,

Breathing into any tension pockets in the body.

This is simply stuck energy.

When energy is stagnant,

We have pain.

When we have pain,

Our mind wraps a story around it,

And then we suffer.

If this goes on for too long,

We start to become depressed,

And this is just our brain trying to cope.

I offer,

Though,

That you are brave enough,

That you are courageous enough to go into your pain.

Come with me.

Keep breathing.

Listen to the sound of my voice.

As you continue to expand the clearing you've created in your soft spots of the body.

Just allow whatever seeps through those soft spots.

Allow yourself to feel.

I promise you can breathe,

And I promise you can handle it.

I promise that you have every tool that you need to continue.

I promise you are strong enough.

The mind might have you believe different,

But you know in your core,

And I know that you are strong enough.

You have strength.

You can breathe,

And the strength comes from a willingness to travel into yourself and break the hardened shells and go into your vulnerability.

Take a few deep breaths into your belly.

As you continue to soften the pockets of tension and continue to release any stuck emotions,

Breathe and observe,

Breathe and observe.

Remember that the mind is going to try to attach a story to any releasing emotion.

And I remind you that you don't have to.

You can just witness.

Stay with me.

Stay with me.

Witness.

And you can watch all the tales of how you're not good enough,

Or how it's never enough,

Or how you are unlovable just float by you.

And you can see those things as they leave you,

As your body processes and detoxes them.

Breathe.

Stay with me and stay in your wisdom.

And as you continue to release those things,

Because you are now more in alignment with truth,

You can recognize how false those things really are.

As you breathe,

You feel this shining.

Have a new sense of worthiness.

Have a new sense of being lovable.

And being perfectly acceptable.

It was there all along.

It's always there.

It's not you adding to yourself.

It's you letting go of what has buried you.

Keep breathing.

With this new openness,

Just know that the mind likes patterns,

Right?

And it is used to your old patterns.

It will continue to try to pull you back into darkness.

When it does that,

Breathe.

Notice the big sensations in your body.

Notice the small ones.

Maybe even notice the big sounds and small sounds.

Use your senses to drop back into the safety of your body.

The more that you do this,

The more that you will continue to break the pattern of depression.

And you will continue to find freedom.

And you will forge a new path of contentment.

Of believing in yourself.

Of loving yourself.

You can come back to this meditation as often as you need to.

So that you can remember who you are.

You are completely lovable.

Worthy.

Acceptable.

You are loved.

You are loved.

You are loved.

Namaste.

Thank you so much.

Namaste.

So gentle and compassionate. I was moved to release my emotions and notice them without attaching a story… tears flowing. Thank you. I felt that the meditation ended beautifully but launched abruptly into an introduction to a website and the music was far more energized than the music in the meditation itself. I understand it, but it was too sudden after the beautiful meditation. Regardless, I needed exactly what you offered and I’m grateful. πŸ™πŸ»

Such a release and opening of internal space. I will repeat it for sure. Thank you The free gift offer at the end is very generous but for me counter productive to the impact of the meditation
