The heart, in its depth, is a centre of peace and calmness. When you open up and use your heart in the workspace, you can transform your life and give new meaning to it. If we neglect our heart, we may attain success and material goods, but serenity and happiness will always still be in front of us, just out of reach. Elliott provides insight into how the heart can be useful in the workspace, and how to begin integrating it into everyday life.

This meditation is part of the Working Class series entitled,

The Working Heart.

Please find a quiet place to sit and do what you can to prevent any distractions.

Be seated in any meditative posture and allow yourself to be comfortable.

Activate your abdominal region to maintain a straight back.

Place your hands on your knees or palms facing up if you wish to lay down for this practice.

Gently close your eyes and mouth now and let's start by taking a deep breath in through the nose and out through the nose.

Rest your attention on your breath.

It will be your anchor throughout this meditation.

Allow each inhalation and exhalation to bring you more presence.

Allow your senses to open up.

Allow yourself to be calm,

Relaxed,

And alert.

Breathe in relaxation and breathe out stress.

I'd like to begin this with a quote by Carl Jung.

Your vision will become clear only when you look into your heart.

Who looks outside dreams.

Who looks inside awakens.

This quote by Carl Jung reminds me of the importance the heart has in all aspects of our life.

For many of us,

A large portion of the waking time in our daily life is spent working.

In fact,

With the number of hours we work each week and given the number of years in our lives that a job or career adds up to,

To not use our heart at work would be a huge missed opportunity.

The heart in its depth is a center of peace and calmness.

When we open and use our heart,

We experience genuine lightness and tranquility.

A number of wealthy people find it difficult,

Often impossible,

To smile freely or feel any real calmness or peace in their daily life.

They have become slaves to their own desires.

They are so wound up that they can't just relax and smile.

If we neglect our heart,

We may attain success and material goods,

But serenity and happiness will always still be in front of us,

Just out of reach.

When we open and use our heart properly,

By contrast,

We find that contentment and pleasure come hand in hand with the wealth,

Helping us to enjoy everything better and with real perspective.

We also share our happiness with those around us more freely and create an environment that encourages and supports this peace and calmness.

By opening and using our heart in our daily lives,

We can feel and enjoy this peace and calmness so clearly that our whole heart and our whole self are happy each moment.

Your heart already knows how.

It's only a matter of opening it up and using it.

So when you are in your business or office environment,

On your commute or your break,

You can and should continue to use your heart.

In fact,

This is one of the most important times to do so for a number of reasons.

And then one,

Two,

Three,

Four,

Breathe out.

One,

Two,

Three,

Four.

Continue breathing relaxed.

Continue breathing in and out smoothly,

Consciously.

The four key steps in doing this heart meditation is to relax,

Minimize external distractions,

Connect to your heart and smile to your heart.

By now,

You should be more relaxed than when we started this meditation.

You can go further by turning off your phone,

Repositioning your body to be a little bit more comfortable or whatever else to block outside stimuli from activating your mind.

We can rest our attention on the breath,

The feeling of being connected with the breath.

Because we rarely use our hearts in our daily life,

Physically touching our hearts helps to awaken and activate it as well as keep us focused on the expansion and contraction of our breath and the feelings from the heart during the exercise.

To find the heart,

Extend your arm out,

Level with your shoulder and trace a line back to the center of your chest at the same height as your underarm.

Touch your heart at that center of your chest with one or more fingers or your palm using either the right or left hand.

From there,

Simply enjoy and explore feeling your heart.

How does gently touching this area of your body feel?

Can you feel the powerful energy of your heart?

Using the gentle touch to help keep your mind still and away from paying attention to any thoughts or distractions that may arise,

You're keeping an open communication line with your heart.

Listen to what it can say.

It may take a while for it to speak to you.

It may not have been given so much time to speak in the past.

Let it open up to you.

Touch it gently and give it time.

Now that the communication line has been opened up between your heart and the rest of your body,

It's time to take this exercise to the next step.

Please smile to your heart.

Smile genuinely and freely to your heart.

Your eyes are closed.

Your mind has subsided.

Your fingers or hand is on your heart.

Your fingers or hand is on your heart.

Your heart has been welcomed to speak to you now.

And now you are offering a gesture of love.

Feel how easy and pleasant it can be.

Feel how your heart grows stronger and more dominant as you smile even sweeter and more genuinely and freely.

This is because smiling is so very natural to our heart.

By nature,

The heart wants to open up,

To give and receive the basic goodness in life.

In this practice,

We're helping our heart to be free and to return to a joyful state of being.

By sharing the peace and calmness that can be harnessed within you with everyone at your workplace,

By letting your heart smile to theirs and radiating the love,

You will not only start to appreciate your work more,

But you also begin to make a real difference in the lives of others.

Plus,

The heart doesn't just help us relax and enjoy our work more.

It actually improves our decision making.

The successful decisions and innovative ideas of business people normally arise from good analysis and intuition.

The brain,

Of course,

Handles the analytical part.

But intuition,

Often the source of insight,

Is actually the result of a good connection with the soul.

The intermediate consciousness between our brain consciousness and our true self-consciousness,

Are otherwise known as the heart.

And while our soul can know a lot of things,

It still can't compare to the knowledge from our heart.

Breathe in.

One.

Two.

Three.

Four.

And breathe out.

One.

Two.

Three.

Four.

And breathe out.

One.

Two.

Three.

Four.

Stay connected with your breath.

Stay conscious of your heart.

Continue touching your heart gently,

Feeling the sensations that are coming from it.

Allow it to speak.

Allow yourself to be calm in this moment.

Our true self-consciousness through our heart knows so much more than our soul and so much more than our brain,

Even if we have the smartest brain around.

Why?

Because our heart is the key connection to love,

Who can guide us perfectly in all of our decisions,

From big to small,

From simple to complex.

But this isn't just about doing better in business.

What's more important to remember is that because our heart is the key connection to love,

Every time we open our heart,

We are allowing love's power to help us in so many different ways,

Including improving our connection to the source of goodness that's already all around us.

We just need to open ourselves to it.

By using our heart,

The flame of love grows stronger and more active.

Because our heart knows love's will to perform good in the world,

It means we are doing what love wants us to do when we follow our heart.

To live our life for love by following our heart is a great joy.

For this reason alone,

You can smile freely to your heart whenever you want.

So,

Knowing that our heart is beyond our brain and beyond our intuition,

We should use our heart in making decisions,

Including business decisions,

Because we now realize that the real purpose is to get closer to love,

No matter the task.

Work is one aspect of our lives where we can really demonstrate our talents and capabilities,

Which should obviously be an enjoyable process.

But at many points along the path,

Our job often fills up with worries,

Stress,

And dissatisfaction.

The heart will be there to connect you to love.

Breathe in,

Hold,

Breathe out,

What is your heart saying to you now?

Breathe in,

3,

4,

Hold,

1,

2,

3,

And breathe out,

Stay conscious with your breath,

Stay connected with your heart,

Allow it to speak,

Allow it to begin the conversation with you,

With the real you,

And watch as the conversation blossoms.

Discover all of the ways that your heart can help in the decision-making processes in your life.

It's there for you,

It's a part of you,

And it wants to speak.

It has a place in everything you do in your life.

Simply allow it to sing,

Simply see it.

Inhale and listen to your heart.
