In this talk, Ektaji explains the purpose of a Guru in our lives. She leads us through a contemplative process through a story. The Nine (the five senses, mind, memory, intellect, ego) are constantly lost in this world of people, situations, and things. A Guru is the One who introduces us to our 'real' self - the Tenth - one that is constantly missing but is always there - just like in the story. Guru shows us to look within.

Jai Guru.

Good.

What is the purpose of a Guru?

Why do we need a Guru?

Tell me.

I'll tell you through a story.

There were ten people,

Ten simple villagers going from one village to another village together.

So they are walking and they have to cross a river.

It was kind of dangerous to cross the river.

So they caught each other's hand just being careful.

Slowly,

Slowly they crossed the river.

They have to actually walk through the river.

There was no bridge over the river.

So it was a difficult task for them.

But once they got to the other side,

They said,

Okay,

Now let's count.

Are we ten?

So the first person said,

Okay,

I will count.

He starts counting.

One,

Two,

Three,

Four,

Five,

Six,

Seven,

Eight,

Nine.

Oh,

We've lost one person.

We've lost one person.

So the other guy said,

Okay,

Okay,

Relax.

Stop panicking.

Let me count.

He started.

One,

Two,

Three,

Four,

Five,

Six,

Seven,

Eight,

Nine.

Oh yes,

We've lost one person.

We've lost one person.

And they're all panicking.

All nine of,

All ten of them counted and they still counted nine.

So wise man was passing by.

And he said,

What's the problem guys?

He's saying,

They answered,

You know,

We were ten when we left from our village.

We crossed this river and now we are only nine.

So he said,

Okay,

Relax.

All of you stand.

Let me count.

So the wise man starts counting.

He says,

One,

Two,

Three,

Four,

Five,

Six,

Seven,

Eight,

Nine.

And you are the tenth.

You are the one who is counting.

So he's like,

Oh yes,

I am the tenth.

Yeah.

Who are those nine?

Sight,

Sound,

Taste,

Touch,

Smell,

The five senses and the mind,

Intellect,

Memory and ego.

Yes,

These nine are constantly lost in this world.

Yes,

Till the time these nine are lost in the world and they think they are,

You know,

Complete.

There will always be a feeling that something is missing.

Don't you feel that in life?

You have money,

You have relationships,

You have friends,

You have a career,

You have everything you could want for.

But still there is something that is missing.

Yes,

That tenth one that the guru shows you.

That is the purpose of a guru.

He shows you what is the tenth?

The self.

You,

You are the tenth,

My dear.

He removes that emptiness that you are experiencing in life.

This emptiness we are experiencing only because we get lost in this world,

No?

And we forget to look within.

Till the time I am lost outside in this world of people,

Situations and things,

I am only using my five senses,

I am only using my mind,

My intellect,

My memory and ego.

Till the time I am just using these nine,

I will never feel complete because one is missing.

The main is missing.

That is why for that you have to look within.

And the guru comes into your life to show you that direction.

Now turn within.

You are the tenth.

Got it?

You are the tenth.

The most important.

Very nice to meet you.

So now you think,

Throughout this week,

Keep contemplating,

Am I still lost in the world of five senses and mind,

Intellect,

Memory,

Ego?

Or am I coming back to my Sakshi bahav?

Almost all of you have done Ashtavakra now.

Again and again withdraw from the world and be in the Sakshi.

That being in the Sakshi is being in the tenth.

That is what you are.

Only one purpose Gurudev has.

But now we only get very short.

Again and again practice.

Like Priyanka,

She is practicing to play the piano.

She is not an expert but she constantly,

Constantly has to practice to become an expert like you.

She cannot become immediately.

Same thing.

Again and again I have to withdraw from the Prakriti and come to the Purusha.

Again and again withdraw from the Prakriti,

Come to the Purusha.

The purpose of the guru is to remind you again and again.

You are the tenth.

You are the tenth.

You are the tenth.

That is why we repeat courses.

That is why we come for Kriya.

So that we are constantly reminded.

Yes.

And if you are not doing courses repeatedly and Kriya repeatedly,

Start now.

We can have all the lines and restill the self.

Correct.

We forget about it.

The story was what they forgot about the tenth.

That is the problem.

The moment I forget about the self,

I get entangled.

Good or bad,

I am entangled.

It could be good relationships,

Good job,

Good career but I am lost,

No?

I have lost the sight of the self.

So the skill is again and again come back,

Come back,

Come back.

Yes.

That's it.

You tell myself that I am not the body,

I am not the mind,

Not the intellect.

And am I kind of referring to the first line?

The five senses are the body,

No?

The mind,

Intellect,

The memory and the ego.

And you are the self.

I am not that,

I am the consciousness.

The self.

Self,

Consciousness,

Atma,

Purusha,

Brahman,

All different words for the same thing.

Don't get confused.

Yes.

It's a constant reminder.

Are you all meditating everyday?

No?

So start meditating everyday.

Very important.

We get lost in the world of the nine very easily.

Ten minutes,

Twenty minutes in a day are for the self.

Let me come back to myself.

Yes?

Sambhi time.

Come again.

Everybody?

Jai Gurudev!
