Listen to Ektaji guide us through a self-exploration meditation, “Freedom from the urge to live” from Chapter 26 of Nisargadatta Maharaj’s book ‘I Am That’. Are you able to recognize the constant undercurrent of restlessness below the surface of silence? From the womb of this restlessness is born either a craving or an aversion. That undercurrent is the urge to live, to exist. Be a Witness to the undercurrent and recognize that you are stronger than it. Don’t stop until you get to the other side.

Let's do a self-inquiry meditation on freedom from the urge to live,

Freedom from the hankering to exist,

Liberation from the yearning to become.

As this is a difficult topic,

You may notice the ego shudder with fear.

Relax the body.

Relax the breath.

Allow the mind to settle down.

Simply sit in absolute silence.

Notice that there is a subtle undercurrent of anxiousness below the surface of the silence.

Are you able to recognize it?

A silent sitting will help reveal that undercurrent of constant restlessness.

Are you aware of it?

Is there a recognition of a constant underlying current of restlessness?

Is there a recognition that the undercurrent compels you to distract yourself from the silence?

From the womb of this restlessness is born either a craving or an aversion thought.

Are you able to recognize it?

Is there a recognition that from the womb of this restlessness either a desire is born or a fear is born.

Are you able to recognize that?

A desire comes up as a strong feeling of feverishness.

A fear comes up as a strong feeling of aversion.

Are you able to recognize these subtle undercurrents?

Are you able to gather the courage to acknowledge the truth that this undercurrent of craving and aversion has always been there constantly.

It was not created during this meditation.

It is not the product of the title of this meditation.

It was always there.

Observe how Arisings appear in an effort to distract you from the silence.

Don't give in to any distraction.

However enchanting a thought may be,

Don't give in.

Abide as the silent witness.

However forceful a feeling may be,

Don't give in.

Abide as the silent witness.

However intense a sensation may be,

Don't give in.

Abide as the silent witness.

However enticing a perception may be,

Don't give in.

Abide as the silent witness.

Recognize the covert undercurrent.

Acknowledge it and face it.

Don't distract yourself from the restlessness of the undercurrent.

Face it.

That undercurrent is the urge to live,

The craving to exist,

The yearning to become.

That is Jijivisha.

Be a witness to the undercurrent.

Stay at a distance.

Do not get lured by its cravings or aversions.

Be a witness.

Break the magical enchantment.

Escape its captivation.

Quit the slavery.

Dispassionately witness its mesmerizing seduction.

You are stronger than it.

Locate your capability.

Unearth your authority.

You are more powerful than it.

Acknowledge that this silence is turbulent.

Just like that of deep sleep that kicks you out back into dreaming and waking.

Recognize that you are stronger than this turbulence.

Bear the power of silence.

Embrace the tumultuous waves of nothingness.

Don't stop until you get to the other side.

On the other side lies the freedom from the urge to live.

On the other side lies the emancipation from the compulsion to become.

On the other side lies the release from the impulse to exist.

On the other side lies the liberation from the pursuit of forms.

On the other side lies the freedom from this suffering.

On the other side lies the formless aliveness,

The conscious nothingness.

The liberated nobodiness,

The tranquil beingness.

You are that,

That formless aliveness,

The conscious nothingness.

The liberated nobodiness,

The tranquil beingness.

You are that.

You are already free.

Simply recognize it.

There is no bondage.

Realize this.

You are perfection.

See this.

Simply be.

Just be.

Quit the greed to become.

Just be.

True peace awaits.

Simply be.

Just be.

Just be.

Just be.
