Listen to Ektaji guide us through a self-exploration meditation, “Dispassion has no needs” from Chapter 26 of Nisargadatta Maharaj’s book 'I Am That'. The waking world was absent in last night’s dream, yet I was present. Dreams don’t happen to me; they happen in me, the Witnessing Awareness. Was I not present in both? The waking, dreaming, and deep sleep need me for their existence; I don’t need them for my existence. I am naturally dispassionate.

Let's do a self-exploration meditation on Dispassion Has No Needs.

For this meditation,

You will need to sit closer to a window.

Keep your eyes open and look outside the window.

That is the world.

Look at the world intently.

The buildings,

The people,

The cars,

Nature,

Landscape.

As far as your eyes can see.

That is the world.

This is the waking world.

Was this world there in last night's dream state?

Is this world the same as the dream world?

No,

This world is not the same as the world in the dream state.

Are you present here?

Were you present there?

Is there a memory that you were there in the dream but this waking world was not?

Even if,

As an afterthought,

There is a recognition that you were when this waking world was not,

That is good enough to begin.

Let's begin with that memory.

The memory that you were there in the dream but this waking world was not.

Let's close our eyes.

Attempt to bring back the memory of the feeling where you were,

The dream world was and ask yourself this question.

Did I happen to the dream or did the dream happen in me?

I am here now.

I was there then.

Which means it is the same I.

Ask yourself the self-enquiry question.

If I were not,

Would the dream happen?

What is the prerequisite for a dream to happen?

Allow the answer to emerge from within.

What is the prerequisite for a dream to happen?

Isn't your presence the prerequisite for a dream to happen?

Doesn't a dream come to you?

Is there a recognition that you are first?

Then in you appears the dream world.

Is there a recognition that consciousness precedes dream creation?

You the consciousness are the prerequisite for the dream world to appear.

Now with this understanding slowly open your eyes and look at the waking world outside the window.

Every morning this waking world appears.

Does the waking world arise in you or do you wake up in a pre-existing waking world?

Dive deeper into the self-enquiry.

Ask yourself the question.

Is the same principle of consciousness precedes creation applicable here?

Is it possible that I the consciousness am the prerequisite for the creation to appear,

For the waking world to appear?

Ask yourself this question again.

Is it even possible for me to prove that this waking world exists when I am not?

Marinate in this self-research.

Do you see that the dream state is not now but you still are?

Do you recognize it was the same you in the dream state?

Is it evident that just like the dream creation appeared and disappeared,

Just like a wave,

The waking creation also appears and disappears like a wave but you still remain?

Let's close our eyes again and marinate in this truth.

Bring up the memory of the deep sleep blankness.

It's simply an absence of the waking and dream arisings.

The blankness of absence also appears and disappears like a wave.

You still remain.

That is why you have the memory of nothingness.

You are the background.

The waking comes and goes.

You remain.

You are the background.

The dream comes and goes.

You remain.

You are the background.

The deep sleep comes and goes.

You still remain.

That which comes and goes needs a background.

The background does not need that which appears and disappears on it.

You are the background that is a prerequisite for the waking world,

The dream world,

The deep sleep blankness world to appear and disappear.

The three worlds need you for their existence.

You do not need them for your existence.

Remind yourself.

This world consists of people,

Relationships,

Events,

Things,

Objects,

Etc.

I do not need them for my existence.

People need me for their existence.

Relationships need me for their existence.

Events need me for their existence.

Situations need me for their existence.

Objects need me for their existence.

The world needs me for its existence.

I do not need the world for my existence.

I,

The background,

Am the consciousness,

The knowingness,

The bliss,

The existence of all.

I do not need anything.

I am complete in myself.

That is why I am naturally dispassionate.

I am naturally dispassionate.

I am at a distance from the world,

The people of the world,

Relationships,

Events,

Situations,

Objects,

Things,

Etc.

I am naturally detached from the world.

Dispassion has no needs.

I do not need this world.

This world needs me for its existence.

I am naturally dispassionate.
